Fall 2008 Transfer Thread

I am thinking about transferring to TCNJ for Fall 2008..i have been accepted and i'm wondering if there is anyone transferring for next year?

anyone out there?

Good luck finding people.. I created the Spring 08' transfer thread when I got accepted and the only person to respond ended up being a kid I went to high school with.. I just felt like posting because I remember feeling lonely about it; most transfers come from NJ community colleges so they aren't quite as enthusiastic about transferring and I don't know why that is

It seems weird to me, when you transferred, did you have a hard time meeting people?

Not at all.. I happened to have a friend going to the school who introduced me to some people but even before I attended my first class people on facebook were talking to me, everyone here is outgoing (it's almost comical how nice everyone is).. My suggestion is that you do an activity. I can be anything but just do something that you enjoy because I guarantee the other people doing it will be very friendly..

TCNJ is the friendliest campus I've seen. You should have no problems finding your place here.

That makes me feel a lot better about it thank you!

Your welcome and congrats on being accepted! You will love it here!

Yeyyyy! Another! Glad to know I'm not alone. Well, its not definate, but I got in and wanna go. Depends on fin. aid right now.

im happy someone else on here is going! ive had a hard time finding people! yay!

TCNJ 2010! I am going to attend TCNJ as a fall transfer student as well. I am super nervouse about meeting people, but my excitment greatly outweighs that. GO LIONS!

Hi everyone! I'm thinking of transferring to TCNJ but I have no idea what my chances are of getting in. I'm currently a junior at American University majoring in Business Administration and I'd be transferring for the Spring semester. My GPA is 3.0 and I'm active on campus and have had internships and jobs. In high school my GPA average was 92 and I got 1130 on the SATs. What do you think????

ewatson - while you are waiting for an answer to your question, I have a question for you. My d is a HS senior and currently her top two choices are American and TCNJ. I'm curious why you are planning to transfer from American and why you are leaning towards TCNJ? 'Just thought we might learn something about how the two schools compare. Thanks!

ewatson.. I'm pretty good at predicting admissions at TCNJ. It changes year to year and so far I've been 100% correct with everyone I've "chanced" on this forum for TCNJ (but don't hold me to my record). I transferred into TCNJ last Spring so I'm familiar with the process, although my transfer was mid-freshman year....

So, American is a good school and admissions will certainly take it into consideration. Your college GPA is decent, but below the average GPA of incoming transfers (usually 3.2 - 3.4). The School of Business is very good here (72nd in the country) and looking to get better all the time so admissions could be strict. That being said, a Spring transfer means the pool of competition will be less as more ppl transfer in for the Fall semester. The average acceptance rate for the Spring is about 50%, whereas the Fall is more like 45%.

You're a junior, so high school stats will be almost insignificant. Good GPA, but your SATs are well below the average here (1300). I got in with a 1200 SAT, so while you are below average I would say that they won't look at that number too much and you can certainly make it up in other areas.

They are going to scrutinize your GPA. Did you take harder classes? Did you do better in your business classes over your non-business classes? How did you do in the 100-level/intro classes? All that will help them determine if your 3.0 is cushioned with easy classes. If you did well in business classes it will certainly help them determine if you can handle our school of business here, but they also want to see that you did well in your intro (liberal arts) classes because at TCNJ we like well-rounded students.

The secret to getting into TCNJ with lesser grades is..... community service. Admissions goes crazy for CS. Infact, the only way to get a full ride to TCNJ (as an incoming freshman) is to have a ton of CS. You can't even get a full ride on just grades unless you are Harvard quality. So if you haven't done much CS while at college I recommend you put in a solid 20-30 hours before applying. I had a good amount of CS so it really helped me.

Other than that, make your essay amazing. Mine was perfect in every way, not to brag, but I researched TCNJ's values (well-rounded education and students mixed with CS) and made my essay tailored to how much I believe in those values. I didn't tell TCNJ I knew that they love those values, I just made it seem like it was pure coincidence that I live by those values in my own life. But I really do, so I wasn't lying.

TCNJ is a hard school. You will write a lot and you will work. But anyone you meet who knows TCNJ will look at you like you go to an Ivy League school. Everyone I meet has nothing but excellent things to say about TCNJ, and they associate it with me. Of course, my brother went to Carnegie Mellon so I am overshadowed. Everyone here is so outgoing, campus is beautiful, the library was ranked 4th best in the country, and you will graduate with a degree that cost you half the money but gives you triple the respect. Good luck!

Hey CM26, interestingly enough, I am a sophomore at Carnegie Mellon right now.. The thing is, I don't really like the atmosphere here, and I'm thinking about transferring to TCNJ. I'm not asking for my chances at getting in, but do you guys think this is a dumb move? Would you transfer from CMU to TCNJ? It's not that the work is extremely hard or anything, but simply that I'm not sure I like this place very much, and that makes it hard to focus. I want to move somewhere closer to home where the atmosphere is more like what I am used to, and people are friendlier.

Would you give up Carnegie Mellon to go to TCNJ?

In case you were wondering I am planning on going to med-school. Unfortunately it is not possible to transfer into the 7 year med program at TCNJ. I am currently a Bio-Psych major at CMU. Would it look bad when applying to med-school if they saw that I transferred out of CMU?

Wow prax that's actually very interesting that you don't mind the work at CMU and that you are looking to transfer for other reasons. My Brother always talked about doing almost nothing but school work. He was a math major. He had always been picked on in high school so we were worried he'd have the same problems at CMU and not make any friends, but then he joined Alpha Epsilon Pi (AEPi) and loved his 4 years at CMU. He's working now, but wishes he was back in Pitt. Just thought I'd throw in how he came to like the atmosphere there.

On the subject of you. TCNJ has a number of students who are CMU worthy, and a number of students who were accepted to Princeton and/or Harvard but chose TCNJ (usually for financial reasons). I'm assuming that's not your case, even though CMU is more than double TCNJ's tuition (parents hated paying his tuition bills). So is it a dumb move? No, it's just one that would require an explanation. You should be happy at college. I was in the same boat at my previous college. I hated the atmosphere and my grades suffered because of it. I came to TCNJ not knowing if I could really be happy at college, and I fell in love with the school. So many kids love this school. The campus is gorgeous, classes are challenging, everyone here is nice and outgoing, social life is good, and home is always a short drive away. Basically, you will love TCNJ and fit right in. Hell, I'll even show you around campus and introduce you to a lot of cool people if you are shy. I was and it was scary, but everyone was so nice they made me feel right at home.

So now we get to the med school issue. Well it's no secret that a degree from CMU is better than a TCNJ degree, but you knew that. The thing is, TCNJ is known for producing med school students even if they aren't in the med program, so when you apply to schools they will know TCNJ and the top-quality med students it has produced. And think about it, a high GPA from TCNJ (because if you got into CMU I guarantee you will succeed at TCNJ) looks better than a bad GPA from CMU. By no means is TCNJ easy, in fact Bio-Psych is very rigorous here I hear. Come to TCNJ, be happy and get high grades, and med schools will have no problem accepting you.

I know a kid who chose TCNJ over Princeton about 4 years ago. He is starting his first year at Harvard Law now. He worked hard and got good grades, and stood out more than if he had gone to Princeton. Everyone likes to be happy and feel comfortable, even the admissions people for med school. If you explain the situation about how unhappy you were, and can back it up with good grades at TCNJ, they will see that you are a great student and ultimately made the right choice.

Personally, I love CMU. I've visited it so many times and even sat in on classes and I really wish I had the ability, like my Brother had, to go there. But I transferred into TCNJ after a miserable first semester at my previous college, and since then my grades have gone way up and my parents cannot believe how happy I am here. When I get stressed I just get in the car and head home. A little of mom's cooking and some words of encouragement and I'm back ready to succeed. So basically what I'm saying is, you deserve to be happy at college and TCNJ will do that for you (I'll personally help you out if you need help meeting people or anything), and if you do well in your studies here you will graduate with a very respected degree (not CMU, but people always tell me how smart I must be for going to TCNJ) and it will not hinder you when applying to med school if those grades are good enough.

Oh and just for the hell of it, you go to CMU so YOU'D 100% GET ACCEPTED, so long as you aren't below the 2.5 GPA required for transfer, but even then they might consider a CMU student as an exception to the requirement.

Let me know what your feelings are. I'll help you in any way you need, because that the way people at TCNJ are.

Hi. I am considering transferring from Franklin and Marshall to TCNJ, hopefully, for this upcoming fall. I was wondering if you had any advice for the application process?
