Fall 2009 Columbia Transfers

liontreelion : What was your reason for withdrawal? For all the efforts you put into, it would’ve been better had you not withdrawn your application…
I also got the email asking me whether I’d like to withdraw my application (because I applied for a junior standing), but my answer was a solid “no”…

I realized I would not be any happier at Columbia than where I am now (Northwestern). Only Stanford would make me happier and 100x happier, so I applied only there. I do know some very special people at Columbia though. Did you try for Stanford as well?

OMG Ehe101 are you serious??!!!tell me you are jking

I searched over the official thread of last year columbia transfers, it appears that all of them get the decisions on May 15. So they bring the magic date forward this year? sounds incredible…

Youch - When did you receive that email? And, if you don’t mind me asking, what did it specifically say? (I’m curious as to whether or not that’s an indication of likely admission or rejection).

I received the e-mail April 27, 2009. Do know that I requested for an early decision because I had to commit to another school very soon. The director sent me an e-mail back saying that, although it is not 100%, you should look for your decision around May 5th.

The e-mail said

"All decisions will be released on the same date for all applicants and by May 15th.

While, there is not set date, it is very likely you will hear around May 5th"

Hope that helps.

Liontreelion: First of all, I wish you all the best for your chance at Stanford. I hope you will make it.
And no, I didn’t apply for Stanford, but I’m also trying Upenn. I guess Columbia is a greater fit for me because I’ve been there for three weeks before for some small research, and I simply can’t forget the experience. I loved Morningside Heights!

And about the mail I got on April 10th,
(Just one thing to make clear: it said nothing about acceptance or anything, it was just too early to make any decision I guess.)

Dear XXX,

Thank you for your application to Columbia College.
Columbia College will grant a maximum of 64 points of credit to incoming transfers, equivalent to two years of full-time study. To earn a degree from Columbia, an incoming transfer must therefore spend a minimum of two years of full-time study here; if you have already completed more than two full years of full-time study, the loss of so much credit may not make Columbia a productive choice for the remainder of your undergraduate work.

Please review our transfer policy statement here. If after review of these stipulations you still wish to pursue your candidacy for Columbia College, you should send an e-mail to ugrad-transfer@columbia.edu to so indicate. Please inform our office of your choice by April 13, 2009.
Thank you in advance for your prompt cooperation.
Sincerely,
David Weisbord
Director of Transfer Admissions

Now my question is, did all applicants with a junior standing received this email? Or is it only me who got this? I’ve only fulfilled 60 credits so far, and honestly don’t know why the admission office bothered to send this email to me.

I’m a junior transfer, and haven’t received any email to that effect.

Rm 138: How many credits have you taken so far? My conjecture is that they sent emails to those whose credits are somewhat near the upper-limit. Mine is exactly 60 credits including this year’s.

Ehe101

Thanks! well I kinda feel nervous now cuz May 5 is approaching. :)

Youch, I received that same E-mail around Easter sometime. I’m at 63 credits.

Youch, I got that same email before I even completed the application. I turned in part 1 with my basic info but not part 2.

Thank you, and I hope you make it to your first choice as well :)

Stewartudall, do you think taking more than 60(or 55) credits will be of an issue for them?

Youch, I really was kind of surprised with that e-mail. I am not really sure at this point if it is going to be an issue - let’s just say it certainly didn’t make me feel any better about the already ultra competitiveness of Columbia’s transfer admissions. :-/

Stewartduall, I was surprised, too. I wouldn’t take it as a good news, but let’s just wait till May 4th, it’ll be coming soon. And I guess from the Chicago thread that you also applied for U of C? I’m going to be totally upset, or be happy, depending on the results from those two schools… I sincerely wish we can both make it.

Actually, more of a spectator on the U of C thread. haha Applied there last year, but not this year. Just like to check in to see how everyone is doing this year. Crossing my fingers for you with both, Youch! Best of luck.

Thanks, Stewartudall!

I am a junior transfer and I didnot recieve any email about the number of credits that i have so far. Incidentally, my spring semester has ended and i have 68 credits so far. I guess i should be expecting that email.

I am not so sure about May 5th… Why would they up the date of notifying applicants? : /

i dunno. don’t get your hopes up. i say plan for may 15th or later since that’s what they originally said, and then if it comes early, it will be a cool (or sad?) surprise. expectations=disappointments. just don’t be too anxious…
