I'm looking for advice from current or former USC students. In your experience, were some days and times better suited for taking class than others? For example, are Friday classes inhibitive due to Thursday night parties? And are afternoons/nights worse than mornings? Do certain days of the week have special events that one should take into consideration when planning one's courses?
thanks

Most important is to consider fulfilling your requirements in sequence plus taking courses which fit your sleep schedule. If you are a morning person, take earlier AM classes. If you like to stay up late and sleep later in the morning, then try to get later start times. You will have an advisor to help you sign up for the courses you need to graduate.

It also depends on your major. If you’re a science major, you’re almost always gonna have a MWF class or two for at least the first 2 years. My political science friend gets away with having class only 3 days a week.

Mdcissp is right- it really does depend on your own needs. Classes right after lunch are hard on my, because that’s when I like to nap. I tried to plan around my own body rhythms, but what is really important is the classes themselves. Classes that are interesting to you with strong professors will be much more engaging that classes that allow you to sleep another half hour. The only time that really sucks is Friday afternoon/evening labs. It is generally best to get labs over with in the morning, so that they don’t eat up the rest of your day.

By the way, 8 am classes will start feeling REALLY early in college.

nikara said it but i will emphasize it, no matter what your schedule was during HS you will regret 8am class for the rest of the semester.

Is there any GE classes you guys would suggest? Especially from the category 6 section, becuase you take that with the writing course first semester

Take something you enjoy writing about because your Writing 140 topic will be related somehow although sometimes it has nothing to do with it at all.

bump, anyone else have suggestions on specific GE classes? Orientation is coming up so I am trying to figure out what I will sign up for.

Before I decided on Thematic Option, I highlighted these classes as possibilities for Cat 6:

PHIL 140g Contemporary Moral and Social Issues
POSC 130g Law, Politics and Public Policy
SOCI 150gm Social Problems

Tuesdays and Thursdays are the biggest party nights. If you’re going Greek, you’ll also need Monday nights off for dinner, and a lot of date dashes are on Mondays too. Plan accordingly. And I definitely agree with the above - stay away from class before 10 am if possible.

As for Cat6 classes… I’m in TO, so I don’t personally know, but a lot of my friends all did Changing Family Forms. Don’t know if it’s particularly interesting, but they said it was way easy.

tuesday nights are big party nights for Greeks? really?!

I’ve never heard that either.

As a freshman, it’s less about the GE classes that you want, and more about the GEs that you can actually get into. Most of the “good” GEs will be full already, and you’re likely to get stuck with whatever can fit into your schedule.

As for signing up, you can go online to Web Registration right now and start setting up your schedule. You can’t hit the “commit changes” button until you get to Orientation, but if you have it all set up and ready, you can just hit that button when your timeslot opens up and beat out the other 200+ kids at your orientation signing up for classes.

Tuesday is the new Thursday.

haha… I’m not Greek, but Tuesdays have definitely evolved into good party nights IMO…

A lot of the classes lectures are full, will more spots open up at the orientation… Its hard to believe becuase some literally have like 10 slots

Russian art class for GE5 wasn’t too bad although it was at 8:30 in the morning. lol
I like leaving my fridays free although it never really occured;;

Thanks Hawkwings for the good advice! I just started up my own schedule builder ![]()
Do you guys have any recommendations for GE category II? To be honest, none of the classes look too interesting.
Also, do you suggest we use the automatic course builder on the website, or is it often faulty? Is manual the way to go?

I’ve never used the automated course builder…it’s not that hard to do it manually. I’m not even sure what it does to be honest :)

I had trouble finding an interesting cat 2 also - I would have definitely used my P/NP on that one if I hadn’t already used it on the cat 6…

So I’m taking ANTH 263g w/ Simic this fall…no clue how that’ll turn out.

@wombat if you’re talking about ARLT 100 they usually keep opening slots up to around 28, 29 people in the final class. It’s not that easy to get into your 1st choice immediately because the class size is restricted…if you don’t get in the first semester you may want to try again in spring or your 2nd year instead.

Alternatively if you really don’t care about being in a small cat 5 class or which cat 5 you take, you can just put it off a year and take one of the ARLT 101 classes which are huge and really easy to get into…

Gotcha on Category 5 classes.

What about all the Category 6 classes though with like 1 section of 10. Like Social Problems has 1 lecture of 10, Changing Family Forms one of 25, etc… Are these just full or will more slots open
