Fall 2009 Schedule Set-Up

A question on the P/NP: are we allowed to take one class P/NP? I assume that’s what you mean when you say if you hadn’t already used it up. Is it advisable to use this on a course you’re not sure you’ll do well on? And how does it affect your GPA, if at all?
Sorry about all these questions, haha.

You’re allowed to take one category P/NP and possibly diversity although I’m not sure. If you’re not good in science then you would use it on Cat 3 or 4. If you don’t like to read or write then on 1, 2, 5, or 6. You need a C- to receive a P and it doesn’t impact your GPA, you just receive credit. Of course, you can always not use it…

taking a GE p/np is nice because you can “set it aside” a bit when you need to focus on your other classes…you still usually have to do all the work to pass, though.

I remember one GE professor telling the class that the average grade of people taking his class P/NP was a B+, interestingly.

I’m taking 19 credits next semester, including two GEs, and I plan on taking one of them P/NP so I can not have to worry overly much about it. If course, if they both seem easy, I’ll take them both for grade and use it to pad my GPA.

I highly recommend the automated course builder. I’ve used it for setting up schedules every time after my initial orientation, and it makes life a lot easier.

Yes, more slots will open up at your orientation session. They save some, but not a lot, so be quick about signing up.

If none of the classes look interesting, well, tough. You’re gonna have to take one of them eventually.

can any current students offer their experiences with GEs? what are the so-called “good” GEs that was mentioned before

I don’t mean to sound stupid but how do you log on to the course builder to start the process? I can’t find the automated course builder.

You log into my.usc.edu and click “Web Registration”, then click “Fall 09”, the it’ll say you still need advisement but you can still click the link at the bottom of the message (I think it says "Click here to use the coursebuilder) and you can make your schedule. My advisor said not to use the automated course builder for some reason so I just make my own schedule using the list of classes here: [USC Schedule of Classes: Select a Term](http://web-app.usc.edu/soc/) but it is there in the window.

“Good GEs” can be defined in two ways:

Easy ones. Ones that you can coast through and get an A, ones that have little to no work, and where you can get that grade even without showing up often. Personally I have no idea what these GEs are, or even if they exist.

Ones you’re interested in. So you happen to be an art fanatic? Why not take an art history GE? Interested in tough moral dilemmas? Take a philosophy GE. These classes are easier to find (obviously) and probably more rewarding. But be aware, you may actually have to work (ha, really?) in these ones.

thank you!

I have a question on a specific class- Psych 201 The Science of Happiness says its full at 185 students will this be a class that opens more spots at orientation?

I’m pretty sure that is it, if you look at the past semesters, the class was actually smaller than that each time while the discussions were the same size. If you really want it that badly, just wait until add/drop during the first few weeks of class, someone is bound to drop it.

One of the classes that I want has a waiting list already. How do waiting lists work? Any chance spots will open up at orientation for a class with a waiting list?

To people waiting for more spots to open up: Not sure how far along the orientations are at this point, but when I was a freshman I stalked the registration page during each orientation after my own. SC opens more spots each orientation, so once you have been cleared to register, you can swoop a spot if you’re online at the right time. That’s what I did at least…

There have not been any orientations yet, first one is next week

If I remember correctly, they open up spots at either 9 or 10am the second day of orientation. I know its somewhere around there.

Anyone know anything about Sociology 250- Grassroots Participation in Global Perspective? Sounds pretty random, I ask becuase it covers Cat 6 and diversity in one, and it could fit into a schedule I am building. Thanks for all the answers by the way

bump. I’m also wondering about the grassroots class

since everyone is talking about making their class schedules…

i was wondering am i screwed for orientation cuz i dont have a schedule planned out?

no you’re not screwed at all. i never planned mine out and it was totally fine. there are a lot of advisors there to help you throughout the whole thing.

You are ok. Try to make a pre planned schedule. Use the senate course guide, rate my professor, and myspace’s professor rating website to help you get good professor.

Schedule mainly GEs, major classes, and if you can, try to fit in a fun class or an interesting seminar.

Make sure you get your D clearances cleared up as well while you’re at orientation.
