I’ve had a 6:30AM class my junior and senior year in high school. Is 8AM really that bad?

@forever09 Hm, I went through my emails and can’t find when we were required to give in the applications, however, I heard about where I was going on Oct. 9th. So my guess is it was due the week before. Applications were probably available around a month or so before? So yeah, sometime soon after starting, you should probably be getting emails from Marshall about it.

@btbam91 Haha, 8am is definitely a lot worse than they were in HS. First semester isn’t too bad, but beyond that they do suck. You’ll probably be finding yourself out a lot more often at night, so you’ll be likely getting less sleep and be more tired in the long run, though this doesn’t hold for everyone, I think it applied generally for everyone, just to a different extent for each person.

@akalboy, thanks for looking! Sounds good. I’ll keep my eyes and ears open :)

thanks akalboy for answering

so that means i just have to wait it out until school starts then…

@Akalboy:

Where did you go for LINC? I’m stoked to go to China, and was wondering how easy it is to get the destination of choice.

Avoid 8am classes at all costs. I was one of those high schoolers who took 7 am classes and was fine with it. But that was then. Yes, first semester was okay because I was excited to get up and be all mature and independent at 7 am to make it with time to kill at my 8 am class. But as the semester wore on, everyone around started sleeping later and later and later. Pretty soon, my initial preference of “sleep around 10-12 PM, up by 8 AM” turned into more of “sleep by 2 if I’m lucky and drag myself out of bed just to make it to 9 AM lecture a minute or two late.” It gets soo hard to wake up. BUT that could also depend on what kind of people you live with and which type of housing you’re in. Dorms are tough. Parkside is way easier to live according to your own habits.

On Fridays, I think a 10 or 11 AM will be just fine. But if you’re a science major, tough luck because sometimes lectures are MWF 9 AM. The school seems to wake up around noon on Fridays. And by that time, it already looks like the weekend. You’ll see people tanning on Bikini Hill and throwing balls or frisbees around on McCarthy. So just try to put your classes on Friday starting, say 10 and end by 2 so that you don’t miss out on fun Friday events.

Oh and on Wednesday nights there tends to be USC Visions and Voices events in Bovard that you might find interesting. So if you’re the type of person who would want to check out those events, keep your Wednesday nights 6-9 PM free.

As for scheduling, I would say to clump your schedule together into blocks of classes. Because if you think you’ll be making use of your free hour in between classes, I’m here to tell you it’s going to be wasted walking to and from your housing and class and doing something to pass the time. Here is where I advise all incoming freshman to learn early on how to manage time. That is SUPER important. Since most everybody likes to socialize at night, get all your work done AT THE LIBRARY in the afternoon so that you can catch dinner with your friends and then chat at night.

@stylar: I went to Santiago, Chile. I think you should pick a trip that goes after school ends. Because the the teachers are a little more relaxed about the presentation you need to throw together while on the trip. Plus, you won’t need to deal with needing to quickly adjust from jetlag twice. Once you go home, you can just continue your summer mode of fun fun fun. And to answer your question: it is easy to get where you wanna go. I hadn’t heard of anyone being turned down although I do know that Hong Kong was a VERY popular choice. There might have been a few refused but I think you’ll be fine.

@stylar I went to Dublin, though it was supposed to be Mumbai. They had to change our trip from Mumbai to Dublin last minute because of the bombings in the hotels. So it was all for good reason.

And in regards to how difficult it is to get in, for the most part, you will probably get into your top choice. The only exception is Hong Kong which always seems popular. But besides that, I think mostly everyone got into their top choice, or at least their second choice. Haha, and I actually much preferred going over spring break. But that could have also been because it was St Patty’s Day AND Ireland also won some huge European Rugby Tournament while we were there.

As nonsensical_me said, blocks are the way to go, especially if you have a lot of classes. It frees up time later and lets you end earlier.

Cool.

What do you guys recommend: SOCI150 (social problems) with Kaplan, or SOCI250 (grassroots…) with Eliasoph?

And how does this schedule look:

Maybe someone here will have experience with this. When I sign up for calculus I, it gives me this error:

I already emailed my adviser about this, I’m just waiting on her email and want to see if I can get a solution here.

Background info: I’m an engineer and had to move down from calc II because of ap scores (my fault) and am completely eligible to place into math-125.

This should probably be in a FAQ somewhere…

There are two types of classes. “R” classes are registration restricted meaning that you are allowed to register as long as the prerequisites are met and there are available seats in the class.

The other kind is a “D” class. In addition to prereqs and space, you must also have a “D clearance” on your record to register. The “D clearance” is typically given by the department (either your major’s or the class’s department, depending)

Most likely the section of MATH 125 you’re registering for needs “D clearance” because it is for specific majors only. Most likely it would be restricted to engineering majors only, in which case your advisor would be able to give you the “D clearance” and you can register online.

@UnleashedFury Did you take the math placement exam? You should be able to add it yourself (assuming you’ve already gone to orientation) if you passed into it. If that’s the case, call the department. If you haven’t gone to orientation/done the exam, do whichever one you need to do first and see if that works.

@stylar I personally did SOCI152, though I don’t think the professor I had (Ransford) is teaching it again. If he is, I highly recommend it as an easy class that is extremely interesting. Otherwise, I’ve heard SOCI150 is really easy, though haven’t heard much about SOCI250.

@Akalboy:

1) I would be taking SOCI 142 with Kaplan. Still good?

2) I have a few potential schedules set up. One of them has no classes on Friday (linked above), and the rest have writing classes 12-12:50 on friday and some different classes/times. How nice is it to have friday completely off?

Do any of you dudes mind if I message you my possible schedules for input?

^ Do you really want a lecture that late on a thursday??

Hm, I’d check ratemyprofessors as I truthfully haven’t heard anything about SOCI142. However, the SOCI GE’s have a reputation of being generally easier than most other things. And no Friday classes are definitely great, though your T/TH are definitely killer. Truthfully, I’d take the WRIT140 on Friday if it gets rid of the T/TH one.

BTW, not sure if you know, but WRIT140 Lab only meets 2 times in the semester and BUAD304 Lecture meets every other week.

For Math 125, call the math department for D-clearance. All majors are allowed to take Math 125.

if you are an engineering major, then the undergraduate engineering office (RTH 110) gives D clearance for math.

One note about WRIT 140 on fridays. Because part of writ 140 is conferencing (you schedule personal time with your AL to discuss your paper) there’s about 5 classes canceled per semester.

And unless your AL is particularly sadistic, the popular choice is to usually cancel friday classes. No guarantees, though :)

What time do Thursday nights get started?

And from a party standpoint, is it best to have a class ending at 7:50pm Thursday with nothing on Friday, or having no Thursday class but a class at 12:00pm on Friday?

Are there any business majors out there?

If so, has anyone taken BUAD 304, BUAD 250a, MATH 218, BUAD 250b, BUAD 310, BUAD 350, BUAD 351??

I am a transfer student and was wondering who you guys would recommend for teachers!

Also, what about Category 1, 3, 4 and 6??

THANKS!!

Thus far (for the 3 business classes I’ve taken –> BUAD 304, 307, and Math 218) ratemyprofessors has been pretty accurate, so I would take a look at that. But remember, everything there must be taken with a grain of salt, but generally it seemed to be true for my business classes thus far.
