I am currently a second-year honors student at a large, public state university in the southeast. So far, I have completed 49 credit hours with a 4.00 GPA. I am a premedical student, planning on majoring in Biochemistry. In addition, I am planning on playing varsity basketball at each of these schools (assuming I get in). Carnegie Mellon and Case Western Reserve have already said I would be a welcome addition to their teams, and I have been playing phone tag with the other colleges.

For extracurriculars, I volunteer at the university's affiliated hospital twice a week (about 6 hours/week) and play intramural basketball. I also spend a lot of time working out and playing pickup basketball in preparation for next year.

your ec’s quite honestly look very weak…but because of your gpa you should have a very decent chance at the schools that you listed, sans perhaps uchic

Hard to say… Those are all tough schools, and your SATs are a bit weak. Your GPA is great, but your ECs are lacking for sure. If I had to guess, I’d say you will get in to about half of the schools listed. They are crap shots for a lot of students though.

Okay, I forgot to add a lot of my extracurriculars. Here are all of the extracurriculars I have participated in since the start of college…

Chancellor’s Honors Program (general university honors program)
UT Medical Center volunteer (2x per week, about 50 hours total thus far)
Shadowed physician for about 100 hours
Alpha Kappa Psi Professional Business Fraternity
Intramural Basketball
Acceptance into the Global Leadership Scholars program (honors business program)
Participation in a Spanish language festival
Orange Nation (campus-wide sports support club)
Langley & Taylor Pool Corporation (summer work as pool supervisor)

Does this strengthen my application?

Also, I have a question concerning my application. I am waiting on acceptance to the Summer Medical and Dental Education Program (smdep.org). If I get accepted, can I include this on my transfer applications? It is a fairly selective program that I would want colleges to know about.

If a coach pulls you in, you’d easily be in at any of these school. That’s where your focus should be. Are you a member of the team at your current college?

hmom5, I’m not a member of my school’s basketball team, haha. I go to the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, and we’ve been ranked in the top 10 this year. I am better than the coach’s son, though! And I’m doing my best to get the coaches to endorse my applications.

I think it’s interesting that you’re looking at U of Chicago. I know very little about U of C, but from what I hear, it is a great school to study economics and such; but does U of C really offer a great biochemistry program for premedical students? I’m guessing you know more about U of C than I do, but perhaps looking into schools that fit your major might be beneficial
