Fall 2009 Transfer

Hello,
I am currently a sophomore community college student looking to transfer to a 4 year school. Can anyone tell me if I have a shot at any of the schools on my list?

Schools that are recruiting me to play soccer:
Carnegie Mellon University
Emory University
Johns Hopkins University
Washington University - St. Louis
Cornell University
Columbia University
Amherst College
Claremont McKenna College
Wesleyan University
Williams College
Colorado College
Case Western
Pomona College
NYU
School that are not recruiting me:
Georgetown University
Northwestern University
University of California - Berkeley

College GPA:3.5

First generation college student

Member of the Men’s Soccer team 07, 08
(08 ranked # 2 in California and #4 in the nation )

Clubs:
Green Corp Club
Economics club
Honors Program
Alpha Sigma Gamma( California community college honors society)
Phi Theta Kappa

Community Service: 25Hr in 08

I am also looking at Carnegie Mellon, Claremont McKenna, Pomona, and Northwestern. It will be difficult to get admitted into Pomona, and relatively difficult into the other three. By the way, Johns Hopkins does not offer financial aid to transfer students.

Your soccer seems like a great hook, but you need to push with all the other stuff - essays, recs all matter. You have a great number of schools on your list. How well do you know each one? Applying for the sake of prestige will hurt you. You need to know precisely how you will take advantage of the opportunities presented by each of the schools.

your gpa is too low for most of the schools on that list although i dont know how much your soccer will help your admissions…without the soccer factor, most of those schools are out of your reach…you will not have a good shot at the schools that arent recruiting you

Does your cc have a relationship with any of those schools? Look at the Jack Kent Cooke foundation. It can help give you a boost that may make up for some of the negatives on your app such as the relatively low GPA.

Yes UC-Berkeley , another thing that I forgot to add is that I speak 3 languages.

I think your intended major (what is yours?) would be a factor as well. Def look up the Jack Kent Cooke Community College scholarship: $50,000 for 2 years

I agree with tenniscostaleez. Look at JCK scholarships. I think you need a 3.5 minimum for them though so the rest of your app must really stand out. I think the first generation student and speaking three languages helps ( I have the exact same situation!); but I don’t know how much it can help. I do not think, simply from personal experience, that it will make them want to overlook the relatively low GPA because you have no strong leadership positions ( at least not indicated here). If you become an official recruit, however, as opposed to some one they are simply looking to recruit, you would most likely get in despite the GPA. Talk to the coaches to get more information. For example, one of my sisters had a relatively low GPA for Oberlin College and she was getting officially recruited ( like the coach put in a letter of recommendation for her and a “green slip” or whatever on her application). Weeks before the decision came out, the coach told her she was going to buy new goalie pads for her ( my sister is a field hockey goalie). So keep in contact with the coaches to see what is going on. That may be a better indication of your chances.

What was her GPA?

It was way too low for Oberlin. I think it was like a 3.9 or 4.0/5.0
