I think the latter is what is generally accepted for a school’s retention rate.

“My best explanation is that SDSU simply knows that with a GPA such as yours, you’re more than likely to turn them down for another better school…”

This is a common practice, known as Tuft’s Syndrome. Schools regularly reject or wait-list very over-qualified applicants simply because they know they won’t attend.

If you really did want to though I’m sure you would be admitted though the appeal process, a real indication that you wish to attend.

i emailed sdsu admissions asking how i would go through the appeal process. I really want to go to college in San Diego, so it’s either between SDSU and UCSD.

Because i don’t believe i cant get into UCLA (or Berkeley), and im in los angeles. My only other options are UCSB, UCR, UCI, all schools i don’t want to go to.

@loller: My gf did the same thing. We know we want to live in san diego and she was less confident than me about getting accepted to UCSD so she applied to SDSU as a backup. She was accepted though… so not everyone with high gpas were rejected.

I think you have a great shot at UCSD with a 3.6, but don’t take my word for it. Definitely try and appeal is you are dead-set on living in San Diego. Good luck and let us know how it goes.

Thank you for your interest in San Diego State University. SDSU admission decisions are highly competitive; this year, we received more than 55,000 applications for 2,877 new transfer enrollment spaces. The California state budget does not allow for any enrollment growth in 2009 - 2010. With this very limited number of enrollment spaces for transfers, applicants were evaluated based on self-reported information provided on the SDSU supplemental application. As such, we cannot accept any admission appeals.

All fall 2009 transfer applicants must meet the following requirements to be considered for admission and remain eligible:
Complete a minimum of 60 transferable semester units by the end of spring 2009.
Complete General Education (GE) requirements in written communication, oral communication, critical thinking, and mathematics with a “C” or higher in each course by the end of spring 2009.
Complete all the General Education courses by the end of spring 2009.
Meet the Grade Point Average (GPA) required for the major to which you apply (see [SDSU Office of Admissions, GPA Requirements for the Major](Minimum GPA Requirements | SDSU)). Applicants must meet the required GPA at the time of application, and must maintain the GPA through the end of spring 2009.
Met the ranking minimum 3.30 GPA that may be higher than the major GPA.
Priority is given to applicants whose previous coursework was completed solely at California community colleges (CSU Enrollment Policy states that applicants from California community colleges are given priority for admission).
