Who here is applying for Fall transfer?

Even though my stats aren't the greatest and I doubt I'd get in, I will give it a shot. Applied ED back in high school too but was rejected.

College: School of Hotel Administration

High School:
Top 100 High School in the U.S.
Top 25 in New Jersey
GPA: 3.0UW/3.2W
SAT: 620M/520CR/490W = 1630 Total

Colleges:
Purdue (Freshmen Year)
GPA: 2.0
Reasons for a low GPA are unacceptable from being unmotivated, having family issues, and not time managing well.

Johnson & Wales - Providence (Sophomore Year Transfer)
GPA: 3.58
Should have a strong recommendation from a professor who was the recent CFO of Starwood.

Main reason for me applying for a transfer is finances. My EFC is a 0 and Cornell offers the need-based, no-loan financial aid package which is quite attractive to me since I'm $65K in debt off college loans. The Hotel School was also my dream school since 7th grade so it still has a place in my heart even though I was rejected back in high school.

I’m considering applying. To be honest, the midterm grade report is really turning me off. If it weren’t for that I would definitely apply, but the awkwardness of getting all my teachers to do this is turning me off enough to consider not applying.

Anyways, I probably willlll apply so here are my stats.

Major/College: Applying to Computer Science in College of Arts/Science
Applying as: Junior

High school stats:
Like top 15%, but I’m a junior app. so it’s not as important

SAT Reasoning: 2260 composite (800 crit., 770 writ., 690 math)
College GPA: 3.96 in all tough math and science courses at UC Riverside
Also took a class over summer I got an A in (community college).

EC: Decent amount of work experience, leader of a band, act in plays, independent study of various computer languages
Awards: Dean’s Academic Distinction Award, Dean’s List 3x, Chancellor’s List, Best Comedic Actor

You obviously have a way better chance than me. If you have a 3.8+ GPA and want to transfer, you’d most likely get accepted to be honest. Were your midterm grades that bad?

My term hasn’t even started yet, so I don’t know how my mid-term grades will be. I just don’t want to go around having to tell all my professors I’m transferring is all.

We are applying to different schools though…I hear the college of arts and sciences has the lowest acceptance rate, like below 10%.

this thread exists in the transfer students forum already.

i don’t think you have a very good shot based on your HS stats and first college gpa. unless you’ve done a TON of great work at j&w, i don’t think you’ll be a strong candidate. how many credits do you have done there? are you taking a heavy courseload? are the prereqs done? give us more info and maybe we could steer you in the right direction to make yourself as competitive as possible. if you can, try to get some hotel related ECs in there because the hotel school really likes seeing people have tested their interest in the industry.

arcade, i think you’d be a strong applicant as long as your essays are solid. telling profs you’re looking to transfer out isn’t a big deal. i did it twice (rejected from cornell the first time for fall 09, but accepted for spring 10) and mostly they just encouraged me to go where ever i think i’d succeed and be happiest. and CAS has ~10% acceptance rate, but still, it does’t hurt to try.

Sorry about making another thread on this.

Well I’m in the Honors program and SHARP program which is basically for students who have a 3.5+ GPA. The SHARP program allows students to take up to 25 credits each trimester compared to the typical 18. I have been taking Honors classes along with Honors-Option classes which is basically a regular class that has a Honors project in it. I’ve taken 23.5 credits my first trimester and now I’m taking 22.5 credits. I just got into the International Hospitality and Tourism program which is a selective program for a certain amount of people. I’m in National Society of Minorities for Hospitality, Collegiate Honor Society, and National Student Organizations (DECA). There were really no other hospitality-related club that seemed interesting for me to join to be honest. I should be getting an intern. this summer also but I doubt I’d be able to put that down on the app. even though my Career Fair is in mid-February.

ironicallyunsure: I’d like to check out the Cornell transfer thread, but I couldn’t find it in the transfer forum. Could you link me?

Hi,

I’m posting here cause you guys seem to be keen on transferring for fall 2010.

I was wondering if there are quotas for international transfers like there are for freshman admissions ?

I’m at Sydney and I’m unsure as to how the grades cross-over. How does the grading system in the States work ?

How do you guys view the SAT ? A lot of people here ridicule it as being really easy stuff but I never think it is a good idea to underestimate a test, especially since I’m only doing it once without any preparation.

I plan to major in biochemistry and a second major in statistics if that is possible, would that affect the admissions? (e.g would it be easier to go for other majors ?)

I want to go to the States because of the snow and it is like a super-sized version of our cities minus the beaches. Academically for the better research opportunities after graduating and the only major downside to schools in Australia are the lack of a year round regular collegiate competition.

whoops, sorry arcade, i didn’t see this thread come up yellow for some reason. here you go: http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/transfer-students/744166-applying-fall-2010-cornell.html

it’s harder for international students and financial aid for internationals is pretty limited (i think? you may want to check into this further if it’ll be an issue). the SAT is required for certain colleges within cornell. some majors are harder to get into than others, but you still need good grades and stuff no matter what. you can double major in CAS, which is pretty hard to get into. there are a bunch of different bio majors, so i suggest really researching them to see what you want the focus of your program to be. you should probably make your essays mostly about the academic reasons for wanting to transfer moreso than snow or no beaches lol and ithaca is in the middle of nowhere
