Hi everyone!! I am Kalyan Baniya from Nepal. I am in grade 12 with my grade 11 results in hand. I got 94 in TOEFL and hoping for 24+ in ACT. I want to enroll for fall 2010. Can I submit grade 12 results one semester later and still get scholarship as a freshmen?? Or which Univ have cost about 13K-14K?

Kalyan, there are numerous college search websites which can help you find some college choices to fit your needs and scores. The US department of Education has an impartial and functional search tool that you can use to find some results based off your budget and international status. Try it here: [College Navigator - National Center for Education Statistics](College Navigator - National Center for Education Statistics) . College Board and anycollege.com also have decent search engines, but I’ve found College Boards does not properly recognize search criteria for some schools (I have tried to force it to “suggest” some universities in my region by entering criteria that match them perfectly to no avail), and anycollege.com’s is often quite out of date on the cost and size figures. I’d try the department of education’s site first, then branch out. College View also has one with some pretty interesting profiles.

thank you alot. actually I am in the top 1% of my high school and studying with scholarship. I think I will get scholarships in US too, but if I don’t I am thinking of going to a cheap uni and then later transfer to another uni for scholarship. Is this a good idea?? I am going for an engineering major. Maybe I’ll get more scholarship in 2011 but I want enroll for fall 2010 anyhow but my grade 12 results will be out only in late june or july. Please help me with this process.

Most schools admit based on 11th grade scores and require final transcripts prior to registering for classes, so that should not be an issue. I don’t recommend attending a cheap school with the plan to get scholarships elsewhere later on- you’ll find that many universities focus their scholarship efforts on new freshmen and although they probably have scholarships for transfer students, they are often not as much. That’s going to vary on a school by school basis, so make sure you do your research on some of your goal schools and their scholarship packages. As far an engineering goes, make sure you pick a school with a good program and a co-op/internship office or service (if you ask the school, they should be able to tell you immediately if they offer one). Transferring as an engineering major can be especially difficult too, due to the strict timetable for graduating on time with a major so packed, as well as each school’s rules about transferring major-specific classes.

thank you once again. I’ll do my search based on what u have stated. and please can u recommend some of the univ of your choice that might be of great use to me? it will be very kind of you to do so.

It really all depends on your ACT scores and high school grades. I recommend entering your projected ACT, price range, and area of study into the search engine I listed and using that as a guide. People on here can provide additional opinions from there. If your ACT turns out very well though, a number of the very top private universities offer need-blind admissions to international students and will find scholarships or aid to make up the difference between the price tag and what you can afford. It’s hard to recommend schools without test scores and grades (and I will be the first to admit I’m not familiar with international high school’s grading standards and how colleges will look at them).
