They just require a little improvement but basically you are ahead of all other primo-applicants.
Hi everyone,
i was not admitted but wasn’t rejected outright,I was told re-apply for the spring since they still need some document from me.This was after my interview last tuesday.

i got an email from Ivonne this evening.

This thread has gone quite cold midsummer!

I’m sorry for not having been more present but my finals were very intense…

Anyway…

I am SO SO SO SO SO very sad moonandstars! really! I was picturing ourselves already joking about the whole thing :frowning:
You should re-apply either for next semester of re-apply for grad school. Everyone keeps telling me it’s a mistake to spend so much money just for an undergrad degree anyway… I know it’s not much of a comfort…

I believe you’ll do great no matter where you go! Let’s keep in touch!

@Pinoiako916: I am so sorry too! I heard UCLA is great anyway and California rocks!

@funshol: You still have all your chances! I guess you’ll be considered as an ED applicants which is awesome!

Hey I just wanted to let all those know who have been rejected but may not transfer yet to another school to not give up.

I’ve been rejected by Columbia before, last year in fact and I just received my acceptance package yesterday. Pretty late in the game but more than likely because I sent in my college transcript late. I did not have any communication with them prior. No interviews. Nothing so I just assumed I’d be rejected. It was very much a surprise for me as I did not even finish some sections of the GSAE, and as a result in my feedback session, I was told that I did poorly in said sections that were not completed.

I think that the fact that I did not do well on the GSAE is a testament to the fact that Columbia GS truly does have a holistic process of looking at candidates and its totally not a numbers game.

I’d strong advise all of you who were rejected to make an appointment for a feedback session and you will hear all the things you need to do in order to attend Columbia GS, which is what I did with the exception of retaking the GSAE.

Right now I’m trying to decided between attending PENN LPS and Columbia GS, which I am not sure. If you guys have any questions about the admissions process, I perhaps may be able to help a little bit if you are interested in re-applying, but everything you will need to hear will be in your feedback session.

Good luck!

Hey injjektilo, I am happy to hear that you got in.
Congrats!!! Your package arrived late…how long do you have to send in your acceptance and your fee? Will you be attending?
Will you be staying on campus or will you have your own flat? If you do accept their offer you should register as soon as possible.
I am still waiting on a response myself.

Congrats!! Post your stats!!

There is a strong chance that I will be attending. I think it may be too late for me to register for University housing so I’m looking at sublets right now on craigslist which sucks because I’m looking to rent for the month of August so obviously I’m getting alot of people putting up ADS who other people didn’t want to live with for the most part. :-(

I am going to overnight my reply with my tuition deposit tomorrow because currently my CUID does not seem to be active and I cannot access financial aid or any type of registration. I don’t know why you can’t just do a reply of acceptance online and send your money that way.

I just hope I’m still eligible fora good amount of financial aid.

UAH offers a service for Columbia people moving to New York. Call their office and ask to be transferred to the Off-Campus Housing Authority.

Also, consider postponing your start date until the spring term. That’ll give you time to apply to housing and plan out finances. If you’re looking to move here next month and then start classes right after, that’s a lot of work. We don’t want you to burn out!

I just read the housing paper from my acceptance package and saw that the deadline to be considered for UAH housing is July 6th. I bet they just put it in there absent mindly unless, I would be considered a special circumstance. I’m going to give the Columbia office a call tomorrow to see what I should do.

What does ED applicant mean?anybody.
@millejack Thanks for the word if encouragement.
@everyone goodluck in ur endeavours.

@Pinoiako: Reading your stats made me blush as I have poorer stats than yours and got in without being placed on the waitlist or having to go through any interview. Which by the way reinforces the fact that getting admitted is really not just about the stats but about the life experience (I’m not saying you need to have AIDS or Lukemia to get in of course) and/or your essay performance. Plus, I know nobody at Columbia and didn’t tip off any admissions counselor :p

Of course I’m not saying this to pain you, but on the contrary to encourage all those who read this topic wondering if they should apply or not. Believe in yourself, make the most of your essays and GSAE and submit your application! Even if you think there’s no way that Columbia could take you, they might! So do it and keep faith. This also applies to all the waitlisted ones. Keep faith! and again, alea jacta est!

@mllJack, Yeah, I hoped we could meet for laughs about the whole thing. I was truly disappointed after receiving news that I had been rejected. It’s fine, though. I’ll dust myself off and try again.
Here are my stats:

GPA: 3.75
104 Hours of Community Service in high school (retirement homes, organizing events etc)
Newspaper reporter for 2 years
Board member of the International Affairs Committe of Student Gov’t at my college.
News Director at my campus radio station.
Board member of the student election review committee.
Vice President of the CUny International Student Coalition.
Represented my country and college at a United Nations COnference in Melbourne, Australia.
International Delegate at the US Naval Academy Foreign Affairs Conference.
Conducted an exclusive interview with Trinidad and Tobago’s first female Prime Minister while in New York.

IN my essay I focused on international events, how intriguing I find it, being exposed to diveristy @ an early age re: me attending a Hindu Primary School…then an all boy Catholic High School…how my university search was driven by the need to be a part of a diverse environment. Interests etc etc etc.

Recs from a professor (former high school teacher of my Prime Minister)…and an Albanian political scientist.

I have an appointment to discuss the rejection…so maybe I can get in next semester. Good luck to all those who have been accepted and to those still awaiting a response!

@ Eiffel75, I agree that life experience does hold some precedent over stats for GS applicants, but I wouldnt completely dismiss the fact that stats & the courses you take hold quite a bit of weight than one would normally think. After all, you are taking courses at Columbia, and we can all agree that adcoms strategically recruit students that can handle courses within their intended major. When adcoms look at stats I am pretty sure they compare that with what your intended major is. For example, adcoms would probably scrutinize a person less if they were a proposed film major versus an applicant who is entertaining the idea of being an econ major.

Additionally, I am pretty sure the adcoms check how well you did with courses related to your intended major as well. If you had a bad semester where you did poorly in biology but your economics & math courses were favorable, I am sure adcoms wouldnt penalize your insufficient biology grades if you intend to major in math or econ, etc etc.

random are you in yet or what?

@ Liz Of course I am in! I thought you already knew :D

My financial aid package was also favorable. As in I only owe a little over two-thousand " out of pocket " for the academic year. From my research, it seems that the average student owed five-to-ten thousand or more a year " out of pocket." That wasnt the case for me. Now I can enjoy a more traditional student experience.

Can anyone tell me what ED candidate means, plz.

Early decision…? Not sure.

@ Random, that’s a sweet financial aid package.
