I was told by the Admissions Office that the Fall 2011 application would likely be available between June 15 and July 1. Please post here when you see it become available.

At the information session Friday, the admissions counselor said the first week of July so I wouldn’t expect it before then.

Just got a message from our UA regional rep. The 2011 application is online.

Hurrah! :)

Not to hijack this thread, but I have a quick question and don’t want to start a new one. I’ve been at two different high schools that use different GPA scales, so for the self-reported GPA, should I put “9th grade: 3.2 on a 4.0 scale, 10th grade: 5.1 on a 6.0 scale” etc or just leave the section blank? (I should be asking my college counselor about this, but she’s on maternity leave and I’m anxious to get it filled out.)

Does it ask for GPA by year? Or does it ask just for a cum GPA?

Either way, it’s ok to roughly guess…the school isn’t really going to use what you self-report as your GPA. The school is going to use whatever is on your transcript…and they’ll convert.

However, if somehow they weirdly convert the 6.0 scale (which has been known to happen), don’t worry, it can be fixed by contacting the school. I think the Honors College has also been known to help get odd GPA conversions fixed.

If there is a place on the app to include any special info, you might include a 6.0 conversion.

It asks for cumulative GPA, I think - it says “GPA, student reported (example: 2.5):” and gives a box. You can write up to 2,000 characters so I could list each year separately.

I honestly have NO idea how to convert it, and I don’t see anywhere for listing separate info, so I guess it would be best to not put anything? My school admits that this GPA system was originally developed to confuse colleges; their plan was too effective, because not even students understand it at all. (e.g. a 5.0 is an A-/B+. . .make up your mind; which is it?)

Yay!

Meet with my counselor tomorrow, so I’ll ask him to send my transcripts to Bama and FSU. I think LSU’s app is up too, but I’m not sure if I’m going to apply there.

^ You got me all excited thinking FSU’s app is up. But only a month until it is. :D

One more question for my much-appreciated experts: To fill out the scholarship and Honors College apps, you need to log in to your mybama account, for which you need a CWID, which it said (when I submitted my application) will be emailed to me as soon as my “application is processed.” Does anyone know what this means/how long it should take for this to happen? I’m anxious to get as many applications as I can done as soon as possible.

There is no special application for the Honors College. If you have a 1250 (out of 1600) or better on the SAT you automatically get in, if you are accepted to Bama. (Thats for the general university honors program I don’t know about the other two.) And as for when you will receive the email with your CWID number I was told that it would be roughly two weeks.

Also, your self-reported GPA is optional, so if your not sure what it is, don’t put anything because some schools I know will punish you if you are wrong (because they consider it lying) so just leave it blank, your official GPA will be on your transcripts.

I thought the same thing about applying to Honors, until a UA tour guide corrected me.

Quoted from the Honors College website: “Incoming students with a 28 ACT or 1250 SAT will be automatically accepted to the Honors College upon submission of their application to the Honors College.”

And ahh, two weeks sounds so long. Thanks for the info.

Is there any benefit to applying this early? I was planning on doing my apps early anyway (as in August or September), but should I do ahead and do it now? I was hoping to decide a major before I submitted them, currently I seem to be changing my mind every other week. Would it be bad to do it now and put undecided? I know I have the grades to (in theory) get in, but I’ll be sending in later test scores anyway to try to get more scholarship money.

i would go ahead and apply now. they don’t hand out the department scholarships until later in the process anyway.

get all the application stuff that you can DONE in the summer.

once school starts they get busy and have way less time to dedicate to applications.

Mavs2011: Is Alabama your No. 1 choice? If so, the biggest advantage is that once you gain acceptance, you can send in your housing deposit. The earlier you send in that deposit (a portion is refunded should you decide to go elsewhere), the earlier selection you have for your room.

It is in my top three for sure, along with Auburn and Clemson. UA and AU would become much more attractive if I could move up to the 2/3 tuition scholarship. UA is my #1 in terms of campus - absolutely beautiful! However, I have some reservations about it. I really like the “family atmosphere” that you hear about AU and CU so much. I’ve heard some really great things about Bama, but also some not so great… so I go back and forth on my favorite

^ Auburn, Clemson, and UA are my top three choices, too. I feel like wherever I end up going, I’m going to be absolutely heartbroken that I didn’t get to go to the other two.

I already submitted my UA application, simply because I’m impatient and want to get as much as I can done as soon as possibe. (Senior year is going to kill me, so I don’t want to be worrying about college apps on top of classes and everything else.)

So you can send in a housing deposit before committing to a school? I’ve been trying to figure this out for so long, because UA says you should have it in by January for honors housing, but at that point I won’t have heard from some schools and won’t have received scholarship info. Would you be able to give me any idea how much the deposit is and how much is refunded?

You can send in your housing deposit ($250, and you receive $225 back if you chose to attend elsewhere) to secure an earlier honors room selection (usually done the second week of March). As for scholarships, you will know very early about Alabama. My son knew within a week after sending in his application that he had at least a Presidential scholarship. He finished with a National Merit. He had me send in his deposit in mid January. He selected his room still uncommitted to Alabama. He did not make a final decision until mid April.

D completed her app last night. Waiting on HS transcript which won’t be ready until next week. Glad to have one done!!

Thank you so much, momreads. Does that mean that I should be able to know which room I would be in if I were to choose to attend UA? Dorms are a huge worry for me, and I keep thinking that it would be so much easier to make a decision about schools if I were to know which dorm and what type of room I would be in - if I were able to get a housing assignment before committing to a school, that would be fantastic.
