I’m glad this came up when it did. I have already been accepted to UCI and UCSD and am currently waiting on UCB and UCLA. With decisions rolling rolling out in a week, I’m actually scared of having to make a decision between UCI and UCLA (UCB is too far and cold for my taste and UCSD’s English program is not as impressive). I live about 20 minutes away from Irvine and I am on and around campus almost daily because my boyfriend goes to UCI. Regardless of where I choose, I will be living on campus. I’m very well aware of UCLA’s prestige overall and its excellent English program. But because I’m at UCI so often, I feel a slight bias; the school is really beautiful and it looks like the people I know there are generally happy. I also like the fact that I can establish my own independence by living on campus but still have access to family on the weekends. I was also chosen to be a regents scholar here, so the extra money is definitely an incentive. I know I should be careful about not picking UCI simply because my boyfriend goes there, seeing as how relationships can quickly turn sour.

Basically, I feel like I’m able to name quite a lot of pros about going to UCI but I still feel conflicted because of the prestige that UCLA has. Can anyone offer any advice or logic? I apologize if I sound scatter brained.

BTW I do plan on visiting all the campuses I’ve been accepted to in May.

I got into UCI with as a Regents Scholar. I also have seen my major and financial aid on URSA and MyUCLA. I’m picking UCLA because I heard the student experience is much better. :)

wow thank god i didnt into uci, honestly the diversity is a big one for me and i had doubts about whether or not uci was for me. im probably going to cal state fullerton, but i didnt go to highschool in the area. do you think i’ll make friends? and if i go to csf im going to be living with my dad in anaheim, so i dont think i’ll be on campus 24/7. oh, and my best friend just happens to be a senior there do you think we’ll see eachother? and last question i promise, csf or cslb? cslb was actually my first choice but i didnt get in? and ucriverside just isnt for me. if you knew any info about the three that would be nice. thanks!!

College experience is entirely dependent on the person, not the college. UCI is one of the best UC schools and one of the best schools in the country. I picked it over USC and NYU and I have no regrets; it is by far one of the best decisions I have ever made.

I visited UCI a couple of days ago. I didn’t apply to the school (I applied to LA and Davis), but living only 20 minutes away it seemed weird that I had never been, considering that I had visited 4 other UC campuses.

First off it’s a very nice looking school, and a decent sized one too. Maybe I’m biased because I go to UCLA all the time (UCLA is tiny), but how large all the other UC’s are amazes me.

I visited on a Thursday evening, the few students remaining there were all leaving. The school really felt dead, except for some 20 students or so who lived on campus who were playing a volleyball game.

It’s possible to make a social life at every college, but talking to people at my work who go there, it seems like a struggle at UCI.

I live part-time at UCI with a friend at Stanford Courts. I don’t go here and I didn’t even apply here because I hate it so much. I wrote about why I hate Irvine in some other thread a while ago, so I won’t go in detail again, but yeah… zero diversity, no social scene, boring, and parking enforcement / police are jerks to the max.

Is there a specific forum for CC => UC transfer students and their transitional experience? This post was super helpful haha and yeah I think each UC has a very different programs for transfer students like I really like how UCSD has housings on campus for transfer students thats close to dining halls and other main buildings so its easier for them to transition. Sad to hear UCI isn’t as great though will definitely affect my decision
