I checked my S Barc account and I see housing charges that show that my S will be in a triple even though he requested a double. I called housing and was told that most of the 2 story dorms such as Santa Cruz will be triples instead of doubles as they have not enough housing for the Fall? Needless to say my S is not happy as he is in the FSSP with his room mate that he asked to room with this fall the rooms are so small not sure how they will fit yet another body in those rooms??

How frustrating for your son! If you do a google image search for UCSB resideNce halls triple, there is a picture of one setup of a triple. There’s info on their website about triples this year and in it they talk about how they’ve actually studied the possible triple furniture arrangements and determined the best way to set up the rooms. Good luck to your son. Now I’m off to see what rate we were charged for my sons res hall fees…

yeah a lot of people seem to be getting triples even though they did not request it
It’ll work out. Like ucmom2b said, there are ways of arranging the furniture to accommodate 3 people. One positive of the triple is that it’s cheaper so it’s not all that bad. :)

My daughter got a triple also! Not Good! She is a transfer whose first and second requests were singles. She has been living on her own in an apartment this is going to be quite a change.

I agree very frustrating for sure I know they have ways of arranging the furniture 3 kids to share 2 closets and barley enough room for 2. I guess it’s only for 1 year my S is already looking forward to being out of the dorms which is very very sad as he was looking forward to the dorm experience… Not sure why they over admit oh yea I forgot for the $$$$!

well according to the housing website, triples are not permanent and he should get on the de-tripling wait list ASAP if he really thinks this will be an issue. He should really try and look at the positives and not come in with a negative attitude about it! He will still get the full dorm experience and his roommates may even end up becoming his best friends :)

Overenrollment + Lack of Funding = WAY more triples than anyone expected.

I’m not even sure myself. I know that I’m paying about $4500 per quarter for my dorm…so does that constitute as a double?

Aside from my question, triples do have their positives. It all depends on the students that your son is dorming with.

Comparison found on another website:

"Pros
+it should cost less than the other rooms
+twice as likely to get a roommate you’re cool with
+you’ll hardly ever be alone (good or bad)

Cons
-more cramped unless your triple rooms are made bigger than the standard double room
-you’re twice as likely to end up with a bad roommate.
-I never get any alone time, ever
-you guys will most likely have different sleep schedules so someone is always sleeping. (roommates may not always be considerate of one another when someone’s trying to sleep)
-loft style triples are a b itch, but if you’re not in one then you’re lucky

It only takes one bad, inconsiderate roommate to **** you off and make you wish you never got a triple. I would still do it because money is a big issue, but living in a triple this year gave me a lot of unnecessary stress. I suggest you try to room with friends. You’ll communicate and respect rules with each other much better. "

I suggest looking at this website:

[The Forced Triple Dorm Room | Online Universities](http://www.onlineuniversities.com/blog/2010/08/the-forced-triple-dorm-room/)

By the way, this was my 200th post. Yay haha :)

I checked my barc. and it doesnt indicate what kind of room I have. How can you tell?

The amount they charged you.
If it’s ~$3000 for the dorm fees, then it’s probably a triple.

i got charged almost 4400. wow that seems so expensive and tuition hasnt even been updated yet

is the price under “H&RS-Rm & Bd-Dorm”? if so, mine was 4600…safe to say i got a double? the posting date for mine is august 10th…same for you guys? and can we find out what dorm we are in (FT, Anacapa, etc)?

Jack, I got something around that figure too. I’m assuming it’s safe to say we got doubles. We can’t find out what dorm we’re in til September though.

Ahhh. I know right Jetson?
These schools are way too pricey…

btw, people started hearing on the 27th and 28th last year…

http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/university-california-santa-barbara/988042-anyone-recieved-their-room-assignments-yet.html?highlight=what+dorm

I guess we’ll be waiting then. What dorm did you opt for?

Hah. That thread. Old times. -__-

When you try to figure out from the cost what kind of dorm placement you’ll be in, remember there’s a couple factors that go into the price, both the double/triple thing and the number of meals per week so, look at the exact price listed on your BARC versus the res life cost chart

http://appl.housing.ucsb.edu/contracts/contract_rates_2011.pdf

I noticed that chart ucmom2b ![]()
I’m doing the monthly plan with 10 meals a week and my payment for this upcoming month is $1460 something…or around that figure…

EDIT: How much was your son charged and for what plan (monthly/quarterly)?

Like ucmom2b said, look at that chart and match up your meal plan to the occupancy!

Anberlin: the only thing I see for 1460 is a triple w 19 meals… are you sure you got 10?

I’m pretty sure I got a double with 10 meals.

And that number isn’t right haha.
Well, it is. Because look:

$1400 per month * 3 = ~$4200 per quarter, which coincides with the double room, 10 meal plan on the Table. Look at the last Payment Plan B.

On my son’s BARC, we were charged 4611.76 which is exactly what is listed for a double with 19 meals on plan B ( three payments per year as we requested)

Confused: as far as Anberlin, there is a 1459.xx listed as a double for 19 meals with plan C ( monthly payments). So I think they’ve got it right…
