Fall 2012 acceptances

OOS acceptance for my son, took about 3 weeks from the time his transcript was received electronically.

Good luck to everyone!

Wow, are you ever on the stick! Congratulations.

Now quickly apply for housing as it’s first come, first served. They’ll refund the deposit if he goes elsewhere. Or maybe you know this!

Thanks, we heard this! If I read the on-line info correctly, housing app opens in November. Son doesn’t know that he is in yet, it is not as if he checks regularly for changes on-line to his admission status, that would be me. If he doesn’t get an email directly from Iowa telling him he is in, I may sit on this and let him get the experience of the fat envelope. He knew his RAI should be an admit, but he will feel good.

OOS acceptance for D today, five days after Iowa received her transcript! Now THAT’s fast action on an application. A number of kids from her HS got admitted today.

Wow, 5 days is pretty speedy! D’s transcript (the last thing to get there) was received earlier this week, so maybe she’ll hear soon.

Congratulations to all who were accepted!

Concerning housing, please check the application process. It’s been 2 years but I recall that once we saw in my son’s online status that he was accepted we had the opportunity to apply for housing. This was definitely prior to Nov. 1. It may have changed but I’d check. By Nov the offers of admission are coming fast and furious. And some of these dorms like Honors (Daum) are filled quickly.

But don’t panic. We were told that a housing app prior to Thanksgiving puts you in decent position, but after about Jan 1 you run the risk of the dreaded “temporary housing.”

Congrats to all those who were accepted. Not surprised to hear about the fast turnaround time. The administration at Iowa is consistently very responsive, organized and no-nonsense. Good luck with the decisions to follow.

Got mine sept. 22 online acceptance. They are quick!

While both my D’s applied & were accepted to Iowa (one attended/graduated, and wife & myself are proud alums), I don’t remember the turnaround time being quite this quick. If we can assume that some to most of the above posters are OOS, maybe the University of Iowa has made a conscious effort–like so many other state U’s–of accepting as many OOS applicants as possible to bring up that percentage, thus bring more tuition money to the University.

Nothing wrong with that. In our neck of the woods (Chicago suburbs), in the last couple years I’ve seen a huge uptick in the popularity of large Midwest state U’s such as Iowa, Mizzou, Kentucky & Kansas. They’re somewhat reasonably priced for OOS, they’re not that difficult to be admitted to, and they’re good schools too.

Good luck to all you future Hawkeyes, if you end up attending!

Am an international student from Bahrain. Got a decision in 2 weeks.
Had 1380/1600 on the SAT and decent school marks. :D

Wait… if I don’t want to officially accept the offer, I can still apply for housing? And if I go somewhere else, they’ll give me the money back?

You can and should apply for housing even if you’re uncertain that you’ll attend. If you wait to apply for housing you will not get in - even applying now will leave you pretty far down the list (it’s first-come, first-served). You will get all or all but $25 of the housing deposit back.

Just accepted today!!! :)

Congrats, Maria(aasa) – The Univ. of Iowa is a wonderful place with a lot to offer if you decide to enroll there. Good luck!

I got my OOS acceptance just two days after they received my SAT scores in November, they are really fast. Is Iowa a really big party school? I know they have a reputation for partying but I was wondering if being a serious student is still easily possible at Iowa if i decide to go? (which is considerably possible)

samie2012, you won’t see a lot from current students on this forum, but I’ll give you my perspective as a parent of a sophomore.

Of course I don’t know what he’s doing every weekend, but I am fairly certain that his partying is minimal. He’s in engineering and studies a lot on weekends. His social time is with his buddies at the rec center. As a freshman he was in an honors dorm and it was as serious as people wanted. There were kids on his floor whom he never saw - they headed into their rooms and closed the door. When we moved him in, 3 days before the official date, there were girls on the elevator lamenting to their RA that they couldn’t figure out their internet connection yet. Clearly these girls were not partyers.

Thanks, the school seems to good to be real so I had to ask.

Accepted OOS to College of Liberal Arts & Sciences - School of Music for BM (performance concentration). No academic scholarship but a talent one is on its way, they just haven’t given me the actual numbers yet. Waiting on that to make a final decision.
