Fall 2012 Admission Decisions

Congratulations to everyone accepted! I’m also still waiting on confirmation about my Financial Aid Award Letter. Is anyone else taking summer school before the fall 2012? My summer school days (6/18-8/12) are conflicting with APS and my financial aid meeting. I live in CA, so I have to plan far in advance to make all this work. I want to do well in Calculus and Chemistry. Is anyone else having this problem? Also, can anyone else confirm that we will have to take a Chemistry proficiency exam before being placed in our fall classes? I read that on the GS site. That’s why I’m brushing up on my Chemistry (which I was taking for fun this last semester, until I decided to drop it for Physics–thinking Physics would better to know in the long run). oops.

@rosamundo: Calculus and Chemistry both have placement exams. I’m also trying to brush up for those same exams so I can take both classes in my first semester. What major are planning on?

@liquideternity haha! T’is a proud accomplishment indeed matey. Congrats on getting in. Are you going to be at the June 26 APS?

Liquideternity - that’s a rough schedule. When you come to an APS you can get more details about it, but your advisor will probably recommend against it. This is, unfortunately, why many people find it hard to graduate in 4 semesters - the credits are possible but lining up the prerequisites often isn’t. Note that you might be able to do econometrics over the summer, and push stats to spring. Stats is not required for micro, only econometrics and some higher level electives.

[edit: I believe french is 4 credits, not 3]

I may try to post up on Storybook my econ planning spreadsheet, but there’s info on the econ department website about what’s required (which you’ve seen). [Requirements and Checklists | Columbia University - Economics](http://econ.columbia.edu/requirements-and-checklists)

Note that if you’re confident on where you should be placed, at least for math, you don’t really have to take the placement test. Just sign up for it (generally this means either precalc or calc I).

ugh still nothing… thats a week and a day since my interview… so discouraged :(

@hiimafrican - I’m probably gonna try and go to the first one. If that’s the June 26 one then yes haha.

@campaigner - Yea sorry I mixed up stats and calc iii with the prereq for micro. Micro needs calc III but not stats. I didn’t know they offered econometrics in the summer! That would fix everything I could replace Econometrics with Stats this spring and still graduate on time.

Graduating on time is sort of a big thing for me - I imagine (for economics) NYC’s financial firms would be doing most of their recruiting around traditional commencement time and I don’t want to screw myself on any opportunities. I might be completely wrong though.

I am terrified of intermediate french though. Especially now that I know it’s 4 credits… I disliked language class at community college and I have this feeling that I’m gonna get to my first french class at Columbia and everyone is going to be like fluent but me lol…

Still nothing…

Do any of you guys know where I can find any information regarding Fall 2013 admissions? I’m taking care of bills and working on bulking up my somewhat weak application right now, so I don’t think 2012 is a good idea. I’m assuming/praying that the June 1st deadline is for Fall 2012 admission, but Columbia’s B-school has notoriously early application requirements from my understanding, so I’m a little worried. I’m trying to get set up where I can apply the first day of early admission to help myself out, but if it’s too late for that, I’ll just wait for the fall to apply at some other target financial institutions. Anything you guys could let me know to set me up, I’d really appreciate it, because there doesn’t seem to be much information out at the moment. Any ex-military here?

General Studies has relatively late admissions deadlines, mostly in recognition of its non-traditional student body. The June 1st deadline is for THIS fall, 3 months from then. GS also accepts a large number every spring, so you can consider a Spring 2013 application as well.

There are 2 main deadlines for each semester, an early action deadline and a regular deadline. The early deadline is non-binding, but you’ll find out earlier than otherwise. The admissions calendar is here: [Important Dates | General Studies](http://www.gs.columbia.edu/important-dates)

EDIT: It’s not uncommon for students to be accepted and defer enrollment for a semester or year. However if one of the goals is to take classes to improve your chances of admission that obviously doesn’t work.

Has anyone heard back from the housing office? I put in an application a month ago, but no word yet.

Me neither Marlon… :-</p>

I got a message saying my housing application was approved, but that I hadn’t been given an assignment yet. (I’m moving from California, and I think those moving from farthest away get priority to housing.)

By the way, are most of you on Storybook? I think I’m friends with a few of you there… but anyone who is on, please feel free to add me:

Thanks campaigner. I’ll be applying for either the spring or fall 2013 semesters, so if any of you have anything to add to your posts that might help someone going through the admissions process later, it’d be helpful for me and anyone else preparing for next year. Congrats to everyone who has been accepted. Are any of you planning to set yourself up to try and land a job in sales and trading or investment banking?

@olivia724 - I’m on Storybook, though I haven’t yet had the time to explore it much. I will add you there. My name is Dan.

I have a strong interest in mental illnesses and the functions of the brain, so either psychology or Neuroscience & Behavior. I am STILL working on my essay. Not an easy task for me right now :-(
