I will be applying as a transfer student for the Fall 2012 semester. Because of AP/Dual Credit and classes that I have taken at a four-year university (not a CC) over the summer, I came into A&M as a freshman with about 42 hours. I'm enrolled in 17 hours at A&M currently; I was wondering how the transfer will go since some of my credits are from AP and Dual, which were accepted at A&M (might not be at Rice). Can I submit a transcript from A&M after this year with "TRAN" credits on it? Will Rice require that I submit the documents from the other 4-year university (the dual and summer course one)?

A few other questions:

Is a 2150 SAT / 31 ACT competitive for transfer applications (to my knowledge, SATIIs are not required)?

Can an off-campus interview be scheduled for transfer applicants?

I am aiming for a 4.0. Is a 3.75+ (in conjunction with my SAT/ACT scores, of course) generally competitive for the transfer pool?

Lastly, how tough is it to switch to BMEN (biomedical engineering) at Rice?

Thanks in advance. I know I asked a lot, but I've done my own research--I always seem to find different info at different times.

Email Rice admissions/registrar and ask them about transfer credit. They make the determinations and decisions and I am not sure what the criteria is.

You are admitted to Rice, not a department at Rice. That means that you can major in anything you want. We do not have BMEN at Rice, but BioE (BioEngineering), which is similar.

Your SAT and ACT scores put you in range to get in as does your GPA. Do the best you can on your application and good luck!

One thing to remember is that the yield this year was higher than expected and so the class of 2015 already has about 100 more students than intended. I hope for your sake that I’m wrong, but it may be a very difficult year for transfers.

:/

thanks, guys. does anyone else have any additional information?

Hey Lestry, I transferred this fall to Rice. What bird rock said about the yield being much higher is true. Rice says they plan on admitting less people next year, but who knows. They had some problems getting all freshmen housing this year, which was pretty ridiculous.

My freshman year at my other university, I took 17 hours and got a 4.0 and my standardized test scores were lower than yours. I do suggest taking SAT IIs if you have the time. Did you take the ACT with writing?

I wouldn’t worry too much about your transfer credits. You can call admissions, but when you get admitted they will send you a paper showing what classes transfer and what classes they transfer as. I don’t believe Rice accepts any dual credit, but don’t quote me on this. Also, Rice will only accept 4s and 5s on AP tests for credit. I would suggest looking through the Rice course catalog if you’re concerned about your classes transferring. Also, you don’t need an off-campus interview. Just do really well on your essays and make sure you show your personality.

I can’t say too much about what will or will not get you in as I’ve seen many people with “good stats” get rejected and some people with “low stats” like me get accepted. They look at your application as a whole, so make sure it’s all solid. If you need help with anything else feel free to message me. Transfers ftw!

thanks! I have taken the sat iis. here were my scores: MII-670(lol);Lit-690;Chem-680. I didn’t prepare at all, so I’d probably dominate if I retested. My ACT (first time, no prep) was a 31. the science portion was wacky and caught me off guard. I believe my essay was given a 10 or something.

My understanding is that Rice will accept dual credit if you physically took the course on that college’s campus. I did dual credit in high school but since the class was held at my high school and not at the community college, Rice did not accept the credits.

it’s a shame. my dual credit was done through a 4-year university and was also AP. I’m glad I took my tests as well
