Thank you everyone!!

Accepted EA!
Applied around November 1st, just received by decision via Tulane website 11/18.
94.6 UW/99.89 W (Use 100 pt. scale, not 4.0)
33 ACT
No hook.
Have not received letter in mail, so unsure of any merit based/financial aid scholarships.
Also considering applying for the presidential scholarship.
Good essays and recs, rigorous schedule throughout high school.
No spectacular ECs, mostly national volleyball team for 2 years and 4 year internship at hospital.

Good luck everyone!

taymust - Congrats on your acceptance. Let us know when you get your merit award.

Just so you are clear on this, you don’t apply for the Presidential Scholarship ($27,000) or anything less than that except for the Community Service Scholarship. The Presidential, etc. are automatically applied to chosen accepted applicants. Only the DHS, the Paul Tulane, and the aforementioned CSS need separate applications.

I have a pretty good guess which scholarship you will receive, but let’s see what comes. I would apply for the DHS and PTA if I were you.

Accept EA with a $20,000 academic scholarship!
SAT - 1980
GPA - 3.85 (4.1 w)

Accepted/Denied/Deferred: Accepted
Date applied: 11/06/12
RD/EA/SCEA: SCEA
GPA UW/W: 3.85
SAT: 1920
ACT: 28
Hook if any: Amazing essay about being a caregiver for my father with Alzheimer’s. Also wrote a pretty nice Why Tulane essay.

I’m so surprised I got in, I thought with my low stats that I’d for sure be deferred/rejected… everyone on here has such high scores! So excited. I haven’t received my letter yet, though I’m not expecting too much. :)

Not sure why people are so surprised sometimes. Remember, that 29-32 ACT range and 1880-2130 for the SAT are the 25-75th percentile range. So not only is your SAT comfortably within that range, HarmCharm, but your GPA is strong, even if it is weighted (you don’t say which). But let’s do some math anyway. The entering class was about 1650 students. Let’s also assume that they all took either the SAT or the ACT. Of course they didn’t, but since most students score about the same on the one test as they would on the other, this assumption of transferability is reasonable anyway.

So that means that 25%, or about 415 students scored below 29/1880. Now even if you assume that some of the athletic recruits are responsible for some of those lower scores (which I am saying only for the sake of anticipating a certain argument, because most of Tulane’s athletes are actually very good students) that would only be a small fraction of those 415, maybe 20-30. Or let’s even say 40 just to be really argumentative. That still leaves 375 “regular” students with scores below that range that are perfectly capable, in almost every case, of studying successfully at Tulane.

So my real point is that, as we have said before, the CC slice of the Tulane applicant universe is highly skewed towards the top end. The reality is that those stats are solid, puts you well above the vast majority of the 2.5 million (or whatever the number is) students that will go to college as freshmen somewhere this fall, and you should be very proud of your record. Your stats are not low. They may be somewhat below the 50% mark for Tulane, but by definition half the students will fit that category, and that certainly does not make them low.

Accepted, Presidential Scholarship, Honors Program.
Date applied: A long time ago, some time in October.
RD/EA/SCEA: Early Action
GPA UW/W: 3.97/No weighted
SAT: None
ACT: 33
Hook if any: Strong personal essay, attending competitive high school means that my previous course load was very challenging.

Not sure whether to go here or Ohio State- guess I have to see how much OSU will offer me. Excited for two acceptances in a row!

SeaLion - Congrats on the acceptance and the great scholarship. You are a strong candidate for the full tuition scholarships, the DHS and the Paul Tulane Award, but each requires its own application. I hope you will try for them.

Not telling you anything you don’t know I am sure, but Tulane and OSU are two VERY different schools, in almost every way. If you have not visited Tulane, I strongly encourage you to go, maybe during the Honors Program weekend they have (two choices for dates, usually end of March and early April). By then you would also know if you got the bigger scholarships.

Any questions, we are all here to help.

Thanks Fallen! I have actually already applied for both scholarships, I am excited to hear the results from them… when do those come out?
Yes, sadly, I haven’t gotten to visit many of the schools I am applying for. I have visited OSU (it is somewhat close to where I live), and am want to see Tulane (especially with the nice scholarship ^^). I was definitely thinking about attending during honors weekend. Can you tell me more about what’s going on there?

SeaLionLaugh - Great name by the way.

The DHS winners are notified by UPS express right after President’s Day in February. At least that has been the case for the last 5 years or more. The Paul Tulane is new this year and so there is no track record on notifications. The web page says winners will be notified on a rolling basis, which I have speculated somewhere on here to mean that after all the submissions are in and there is an elimination of the ones that are not qualified for the award, the remaining entries will be judged and as winners are determined, they will be told. So there might be days or even weeks between the first winner and the last. My best guess is that around mid-January the first people might start to hear, and then it is just a matter of how many qualified submissions there are as to how long it takes to get through them. But that is purely a guess on my part.

As far as Honors Weekend, maybe someone that went last year can speak up here, because it has been 4 years since my D went and I think it has changed a bit, but I think not too much. You stay with a current student, get some nice info from President Cowen and people associated with the HP (and get a little ego stroking at the same time, lol), you get to register for classes with an advisor even though you might not have definitely decided on Tulane yet, there is usually an outing of some kind (Boat ride, the Rock & Bowl, something like that), and of course you get a tour, get to see what it is like to eat on campus and you get to attend a class or two. It is usually at one of the nicest times of the year weather wise with all the azaleas and other flowering plants out, so it is quite beautiful. Parents are welcome of course, there are some separate events for them. They stay for the talk with Pres. Cowen and the others, but then after the tour they go their way and you go yours.

The other nice thing about Honors Weekend is that even though most have not formally committed to Tulane yet (unlike Orientation in June), many are pretty sure they are going. So it is an opportunity to meet a potential roommate. Plus since you would have registered already, there is no compelling reason to go again to the Orientation in June, although many do.

If you can at all do it, full tuition or not, I would highly encourage you to. The difference in the environment you would find yourself is quite stark. My cousin went to OSU (or should I say THE OSU, lol) and I have been to Columbus many times. Certainly it is a good school with many opportunities. It is just so very different. It might fit you better even. That is what I am encouraging you to find out.

Presidential and Honors as well! I’ve got my fingers crossed for the DHS or Paul Tulane as well, because I have full tuition elsewhere but I really liked Tulane.

km1224 - Outstanding! I know that is what you were hoping for (obvious though that may be. Who wouldn’t hope for that?). Mind sharing your stats and some background?
