Fall 2013 Decisions Thread

Congrats pushydad and all others who were recently accepted. The craziness definitely starts to go away after that glorious moment. Good luck to anyone still waiting. We are all rooting for you.

Congrats pushydad!!! Such a great relief!

Accepted!!!
3.86 W gpa
2320 SAT (800CR, 800W, 720M)
2 AP tests last year, 3 AP classes this year
decent EC’s
 so happy!

Very nice, colleger! That’s an impressive SAT score.

Tulane is my dream school, but I haven’t been accepted yet and I am getting increasingly nervous that I will not be accepted.

I applied in early October and Gibson indicated that my application was complete in late October.

ACT: 32
UW GPA: 4.0
Weighted GPA: 4.975
Lots of IB and AP courses
Varsity dive captain
Heavily involved with the local theatre

I didn’t write a Why Tulane essay because at the time I felt confident in my required essay and my stats. However, I am worried that not writing this essay will result in me not being accepted. The wait is killing me. Any ideas what could be delaying my decision?

All competitive schools look for some sign you are truly interested in attending, Tulane perhaps more than most. So if you didn’t write a “Why Tulane”, didn’t visit campus or attend a local session, or haven’t communicated with your admissions officer at Tulane, they might assume you are using Tulane as a “back-up plan”. Your stats would seem to make you competitive at a number of schools that are even more selective than Tulane. I am not saying you won’t get accepted by any means, just that this might be causing them pause. I am assuming you applied EA which is at least one sign of interest, but SCEA would have been better since Tulane is your “dream school”. Of course maybe you did SCEA.

What you can still do is find out who your specific admissions person is at Tulane if you don’t already know, and basically go ahead an write a “Why Tulane” statement to them as an e-mail. If you can convince them that you will definitely attend if accepted, I would be surprised if you did not see a quick acceptance.

I did attend an information session/campus tour and I have contacted my admissions counselor via email in which I expressed a considerable amount of interest. I will definitely send her a formal Why Tulane essay though. Thanks!

yes, i agree emstar…go write that why tulane essay right now

and i said it on another thread…but yeah pushyday!!!

emstar - Then I only have two other possibilities I can think of. One, you accidentally marked your app RD. Unlikely but it has happened in the past. Two, it just has not been acted on yet for no particularly good reason other than chance. Neither of those seem very likely, but it has to be something. I would definitely get the essay out as quickly as you can (but do a good job, of course!) not only to solidify your interest, but to hopefully tickle your file to the top of the pile.

Deferred.
10/26
RD/EA/SCEA: EA
GPA UW/W: 97.8 uw, 102.7 w
SAT: 2280 (780 cr, 700 m, 800 w)
ACT: n/a
Hook if any: Hispanic/Latino

I didn’t show any interest (local reception was on my birthday, heh). Interest is important!

Daughter accepted! $25,000 Distinguished Scholar plus Honors invite
SCEA
4.08W/3.95UW
2 APS (only 6 offered) the rest honors
ACT 30 (33E,31R,28M,27S,30EW)
Hook: 1 year early graduation; probably strong counselor rec; lots of EC and leadership; lots of expressed interest i.e.campus visit, Why Tulane

RDmomma- Fabulous! Congratulations!

Very strong, RDmomma. You sound mildly happy.

Waiting for my notification! Literally cannot wait, Tulane is my top choice.
Act: 32
GPA: 3.45 UW

 • Writer for school’s literary magazine.
 • Eagle Scout
 • 100+ hours of service through school and Boy Scouts
 • Almost ridiculous upward trend in grades: 3.1’s and 3.2’s to 3.86 and 3.9 last couple semesters (Unweighted)
 • My talent is writing, and I believe my essays (regular and ‘Why Tulane’) were stellar.

Nervous and hopeful!

Okay FC: I hear a whinny from the dead horse. Your AP theory. (nope) My SCEA theory. (nope) RDmomma’s child and my kid had extremely similar stats. Same standardized. She had 2 APs but mine had 8 APs. Both had SCEA. She got the red carpet and mine umm, not so much. RD- was your D highly ranked in her class? You should be so proud of her especially getting out of HS in 3 years!

Well, they only offered 6 AP courses AND she graduated in 3 years, so not sure this case can be compared straight-up. I am not giving up my theory yet! Although I do think it is more complicated than that anyway. I was just saying they seem to weight it more this year, in general. But I admit my theory is looking fragile.

doingthisagain Yes ranked 1st in class, only 3 or so classmates > 4.0. Though only 2 APs, her transcript was very strong: mostly honors, 3 years language, zero hour to accommodate AP class. Her essay discussed maxing out her high school offerings and being ready to move on to college; maybe fairly strong ACT for 3 years of high school too and lots of leadership

Accepted/Denied/Deferred:Deferred! super sad/mad
Date applied: i cant remember
RD/EA/SCEA:EA
GPA UW/W: 3.83 uw
SAT:2060(660cr,740m,660w)
ACT:n/a
Hook if any:none really. great essays/recs/extracurriculars.
i wasn’t expecting this at all. i hope i still get in in the regular applicant pool:/

The best part of the Tulane forums for me is “meeting” all these amazing kids. The resumes are so awesome. Each one looks to be well rounded and special.
RDmomma- woweee, wowee.
FC - my class rank theory is looking more plausible. I think rank trumps standardized tests, AP/IB AND grades when it comes to merit/Honors offers.

So many high achieving high schools, like D’s, don’t rank. It’s hard to accept the rank theory.
