OK, took the GSAE today … feels like it went well. As far as I know, that was the only piece music from my application. Now I have nothing left to do but wait.

Hi FY, it is just a simple mail, Columbia envelope, I hope you won’t received it, it is not fedex, so it is not overnight, it just 2-3 days regular mail.

Good luck, do not worry, if they would be sent it to you you would get it.

And pls do not panic, I had a really low scores and I was little bit careless, I never contact with them so and so. I am sure you have better scores and essay than mine.

Hey everyone, hope you all have had or will have great news soon!! A quick question for all of the prospective students applying to the GS program at Columbia:

I am enrolled in Nassau Community College in the State of NY with a 3.93 G.P.A majoring in Business Administration. Some of the courses that I have taken, all receiving A’s, are Macro-Economics, Micro-Economics, English I and II, Accounting I and II, Intro to Stat, Algebra and Trig, Pre-Calculus, Calculus I and many more that may impress the admissions officer; (56) credits. I am planning on applying for the Spring 14 semester and am starting to draft my essay now, with intentions to major in Economics and Math. I currently hold a vice president position in the Honors and Wall Street Club, and plan on getting a leadership position in one other club. I took and got a 29 on my ACT’s which may also help my chances. However, the only aspect of the admissions process that frightens me is the essay, which is why I am starting it now, and my overall experience. As we all, or should know, an applicant must have a 1-year break from High School to College. While most people who apply to the GS program have more than a 1-Year break, average age of 29, I have exactly a 1-year break. That 1-Year break, which shaped my experience, was a year living in Israel studying the culture. What frightens me is the fact that my experience might not be comparable to the other applicants who may be a better “fit” for the program. What do you think are my chances?

Again, hope everyone has great news to share soon!!

@Jacobstein614, I think you have a very good chance of being accepted. Your GPA and test scores are what GS is looking for, and I would highlight a lot on your experiences in Israel for your essay. You should definitely apply!

I too think your chances are very good! A talk with a GS representative should help resolve some of your questions, I suggest a visit.

Columbia called today and we conducted a phone interview. The gentleman was extremely nice and understanding of my half answers as I choked up and my voice was clearly shaky. I hope I didn’t blow it!

I would also like to note that I haven’t been in school in 10 years and the interview was focused on my high school career, why I didn’t attend college immediately after and what my plans are for the future, why, and how Columbia can help me get there. I now understand why it’s taken so much time, he clearly knew my entire essay and transcripts. He even mentioned a low grade (a C) I got in Physics 12 years ago!

that’s funny that he brought up the 12 y/o grade. minds grow and develop over time. responsibily increases. knowing what you want and being fully committed to that pursuit will guarantee success. i know he must inquire but it’s still kinda funny.

i got interview today in person and don’t know the result yet. I was told that I will be heard by this evening but hopefully will hear soon. Don’t know whether I will get in or not! lighting butter lamps in my mind! Be true to yourself in the interview. Good luck guys!

@misteruee he questioned my grade from back then in the context of finding out what I did to improve it the following semester and applied the same question as to how I would handle a class at Columbia that I was having difficulties with. But it is amazing how your past can really haunt you!

@iowanova Good luck! I hope all goes well!

@to6284: ok that makes more sense. :)

Got my acceptance packet via Fedex on April 25th and a call from the admissions office later that same day! I haven’t posted at all in this thread, but I have definitely been following it. I didn’t submit my application until March 17th and my transcripts didn’t arrive until April 2nd.

High school (unweighted): 3.7 GPA
SAT: 1840 combined, no ACT
2 years of suffolk county community college honors program: 4.0 GPA
Extracurriculars: Honors club and Phi Theta Kappa

My essay is what I think did it for me. I wrote about the hardships and challenges I’ve had to overcome in order to get the education I think I deserve. I’ll try to summarize it briefly. I was born in Colombia and raised in America by my single mother. My mom was basically the working-father figure and I was the mother figure for my younger siblings. From a young as I was driven to make my mom proud so I excelled in school and got a significant scholarship for a private high school education. Half way through high school I had immigration problems and almost got deported. I married my high school sweetheart during my first year at Suffolk. After graduating with my associates, I took a gap year and worked as an assistant manager at a gourmet food shop. I got my green card in January and decided to apply to Columbia soon after. I turn 21 in June, which made my story very out of the ordinary for my age.

Hey Karentheelephant,

I’m also coming from SCCC, I wonder if we know each other!!! My name is Natalie, VP Honors Club Ammerman campus.

Never mind, sounds like your done with Suffolk, I finish in May.

I am so confused! I called GS to make sure they finalized everything after my interview yesterday (4/29) and I was informed a decision had been made on the 24th. So does that mean the interview didn’t really matter? Also, she said she couldn’t give me an answer over the phone because her system only allows her to see that a decision was made, but not what kind of decision and that I should receive a letter by the end of the week. I tried my log in on the financial aid page and I can actually log in and it asks me to follow certain steps to complete my financial aid. Am I in or is this a glitch?!

You’re in. Congrats!!!

I just checked if I could log into financial aid and it worked for me as well. I haven’t had a phone interview, though. Does this mean good news for me?
