This fall, I'm going to be a sophomore transfer student at Cornell. I have a TON of friends at Cornell already from doing a summer college program there, and the girls really seem to be enjoying their sororities. I know that formal rush is held in the spring, but I would love to get involved early, if possible, and join fall rush. Coming from a state school, I'm big on parties, and I know the vague sorority reputations but girls are very hesitant to confirm or deny these stereotypes. I was wondering if anyone knows about what fall rush is like or if it happens within the following sororities, which are my top considerations right now: Alpha Phi, Kappa Kappa Gamma, Kappa Alpha Theta, Kappa Delta.

Most top houses won’t rush in the fall, so your best bet would be to wait until spring. I heard there is a new sorority at Cornell, but I don’t know when they will start their rush. This will give you some idea if you are looking for stereotypes:

I think Cornell’s sororities are more low key than schools from south or big state Us. They look for girls they could be friends with and to some extent to “protect/elevate” their reputation. The only thing I will say is not to create too much of a reputation for yourself because it maybe contrary to what some of those sororities are looking for.

Thank you very much for your input, oldfort! I’ll probably wait a while and see which sororities are participating in fall rush, and if my favorites aren’t, I’ll just have to be patient and wait for spring.

The new sorority chapter isn’t coming until the 2014-2015 school year (at least, that’s what I’ve heard).

As has been said before, those houses probably won’t do fall rush. One of my transfer friends joined KD the fall that she transferred, but she was a legacy so it might have been different circumstances.

Also I’d suggest you don’t buy too much into the stereotypes of each chapter or go into it thinking that you’ll be in a certain house for sure. Ultimately girls end up where they should, and everyone I know that’s in a sorority seems to enjoy themselves.

I will be honest - rush is kind of brutal. It’s a lot of making the same small talk conversations and drinking hot chocolate and running around in cute outfits under sweatpants and baggy sweatshirts in the snow. Since it’s a process of mutual selection, sometimes things work out and sometimes they don’t. The good thing is that it’s very structured and you get to see all the houses, so if you don’t make a complete fool of yourself, suicide bid, or drop out, you will probably end up in a sorority and participate in all the mixers, parties, crushes, formals, etc.
