Fall 2013 Transfer Thread

That’s the same for me. I applied mid December, but everything didn’t arrive till 1/25. I hope I get some good results like that soon, keep me updated!

Just got accepted! No email yet, but the “View Decision” link popped up on Wolverine access with the good news. Now I’m kinda glad they sent me that not-quite-an acceptance email earlier. If they hadn’t, I probably would have been paralyzed with tension staring at that little link, unable to click on it. This way it was more of a confirmation than anything.

PKDfan, what were your stats and where were you transferring from?

Congratulation PDK!! Being that we both applied around the same date, I’m going to start getting nervous if I don’t receive anything back by the end of next week. :frowning_face_with_open_mouth:

Weighted High School GPA: 3.7
Obama for America Fall Fellow (Community Organizer; youngest in state of Illinois)
Lots of Political involvement
Transfer from University of Iowa. College GPA 3.57 (I am a first year student so that GPA is only of one semester)
6 AP Credits
ACT: 31
Will be transferring as a second year student, probably will have 50+. Political Science major, possible double major in Finance.

Solid stats MP, when did you apply?

@trumboma

College Stats:

-Transferring from a community college in Michigan (OCC, specifically).

-3.98 college GPA, fairly rigorous course load. Probably a little unbalanced towards math/science courses, but I tried to knock out a decent chunk of the other Area Distribution requirements as well (humanities, social sciences, etc).

-53 credits at time of application, 8 incoming. Not all of those transfer, though. Credits were taken over two years with no breaks.

-EC’s: Only “official” activity is that I worked as a math tutor for my school for two semesters. I spend a lot of time teaching myself mathematics, though. That’s what I talked about on the Common App essay asking to “elaborate on an extracurricular activity”. No clubs, volunteering or anything like that, though.

-Phi Theta Kappa member. This one’s pretty meaningless. All you need to do to get in is keep up a decent GPA and pay a one-time fee, but it might have helped.

-Very strong essays, in my opinion. I’m a pretty decent writer and I worked extremely hard on getting them just right. I think I managed to convey my life story in an interesting way, as well as my passion for mathematics and why U of M is the perfect fit for my academic goals.

-Glowing letter of recommendation from my English professor, who’s a (fairly) recent Michigan alumni. I mean, I assume it’s glowing. She seemed really enthusiastic about writing it for me for when I asked.

Now, as for high school:

-I had a GPA below 1.0 (can’t remember exactly, but I failed most classes).
-Attended numerous schools, including a few alternative/continuation schools.
-Never participated in any sort of extracurricular activity. Actually, I rarely participated in any sort of curricular activity, either. I would basically just show up to class and read a book or sleep instead of work.
-No disciplinary problems, though. I wasn’t a bad kid or a troublemaker, I just really hated school.

As you can see, quite a difference. Also, I should probably mentioned that although I did drop out of school, it was specifically so I could start attending community college instead (and I of course mentioned that in my essays). So my first year at community college would have been my senior year in high school had I not dropped out.

I really don’t think HS stats matter if you can explain things well in the essays, especially if it can be backed up with evidence. I talked about personal issues that affected my performance in high school and how my poor grades were a result of these issues, rather than not understanding the subjects. My transcripts backed this up - for example, I placed into Calc I my first semester despite failing all my previous math classes (the last of which was a year and a half before the placement test), which I wouldn’t have been able to do if I had actual difficulty with math. I’m not saying that to brag (and I apologize if it comes off that way), just pointing out that it was pretty clear on my application that my poor performance in HS wasn’t for academic reasons.

Obviously, I also needed to also describe how I’ve moved past the personal issues that were the source of my problems. I think I did a good job on this, which is probably why (in addition to my solid college transcripts) they looked past my high school grades.

ACCEPTED TODAY!!
my “view decision” link showed up on wolverine access today (2/2), but I have yet to receive any emails from them confirming my acceptance. My application was submitted on 1/15 and all my materials were received by 1/22.

I’m a Michigan State University freshman transferring to UofM for sophomore year. I received a 4.0 GPA first semester at MSU and applied with 25 credits, 39 credits pending after winter semester. I am in the honors college here, have a job working for the Dean, sing in a vocal group, and I’m a Zeta Tau Alpha sorority member.

I got deferred early admission, wait listed, and rejected out of high school last year. I had a 3.8 UW GPA and a 29 ACT. Lots of extra curriculars and community service in high school.

@PKDfan, Congratulation on your acceptance!! I also applied as a fall transfer 2013 as a junior on 1/31/2013. I am a sophomore going PSU right now
My college GPA is 3.41 High School GPA 3.3
SAT 1850
I am a member of honor’s college at PSU and got in dean’s list once
I worked at english village, where little comes to learn english in Korea.
Worked at Northwestern Mutual Finance Network in NYC
Worked at Samsung Fire & Marine Insurance in NJ

What are my chances?

^Your GPA is a little low, however, that might not be that big of a hindrance considering that your coming in as a junior. Good luck, keep us updated!

Msuchick congrats!

I actually applied for the Spring 2013 semester but I’m a freshman at MSU looking to transfer too.

4.0 GPA first semester-22 credits completed, 40 pending
Invited into Tower Guard (top 5% of class)
Invited into Honors College
Spartan Dischords
Got three letters of rec from professors

I had a 3.7 and a 31 ACT in high school.
Varsity Football- Captain
Varsity Golf- All-State Academic
Choir President
National Honor Society

What do you think?

^I think your chances are very good. Only thing I can think of that would deter you would be the credits (Although I doubt that will make even a minute difference). Given your perfect college gpa and very good hs gpa I think you should not have a problem.

–On a side note to the persons saying they will get nervous if they do not get an answer soon, it will come. If you check the previous transfer threads even those who applied first sometimes have to wait the longest. Some wait a very scarce amount of time and others have to wait months.–

Hope I get a good news in few weeks!!

^^ I really hope! My only problem is that I started the math ladder late. I have 51 credits with a 3.78 GPA(I’ll have 66 after this semester), but I’m just now taking trig. Let me know what you guys think! How much will it effect my admission decision?

Your GPA is amazing!!!
I dont think that matters
Even though you started math class late, you have solid gpa

BTW I haven’t got my WA access code yet. DO you guys know when I will get??

@Parker-- LSA or CoE?

@audqjaa-- It all depends when you applied, but by now I would assume you should have gotten your WA information, it usually comes promptly. If I were you I would not hesitate to call admissions, even if you have to call a handful of times to get an answer. It is your school/life that is the gamble; being proactive is acceptable.

Transferring as a sophomore. Sent in my application on 1/17 and all documents there by 1/28.

Got into U of Illinois-Urbana Champagne last week, transferring out of GWU for financial reasons (lame)

Biting my nails, eek

@transfer LSA

@transferthred. Yeah I got my access code today!!! Thanks
BTW guys I logged on to my account and checked under credentials
And I had only TOEFL written on credential section.
Is that mean UMICH got everything except my TOEFL score?
