Can anyone tell me if my S have a chance with UCLA Electrical Engineering program (computer engineering is second choice)
GPA w 4.03 / uw 3.75
SAT 2080
ACT 30
Lot of honor and AP classes (some semesters with 5 AP classes)
Some awards, some ECs volunteer works
In-state.

I feel like he didn't stand a chance given this year 100K+ applicants. Also, being Asian might hurt the chance also, is that correct?

@2018dad:
SAT breakdown: Reading 680, Math 700, Writing 700
Math level II 730
ACT breakdown: English 30, Math 28, Reading 33, Science 27, Combined English/Writing 29

I asked for the breakdown since your son is applying to Engineering, they will be lookign at the Math score. It will be a low reach. The Math score is good but it might be a little bit on the low side compare to other Eng’g applicants. The good news is the Math Level II is good. It may all come down to his essays and EC’s.

Also the college of eng’g has the lowest admit rate (15.8%).

The good news is among all the eng’g majors, EE has one of the highest admit rate. I can’t find the source anymore, but I read it before when my D was researching her intended major. She didn’t apply to UCLA’s eng’g. She applied to L&S’ computer science and linguistic major.

I know that your son applied to UCSD. Did he apply to other UCs and/or CalPoly SLO?

Yes, 100,000 applicants and your being in California does not help… I am in CA, too, and the public colleges are overwhelmed here, and the privates are getting double the applications they used to because of it (plus many privates offer some merit aid–especially to out-of-state kids). I think given he is engineering that demand for that field is such that it is an advantage to him. The publics in CA, though, are taking many more out-of -country and out-of-state students than they used to for the higher tuition and to get even more of a “national” reputation.

thank you 2018dad & lynjobes. We applied to UCI, UCLA, UCSB and UCSD. There are so many smart kids out there and that’s why i’m so worry. We should have applied for UC Riverside because his friends were accepted with lower stats than his. This is my first child going to a UC in California so we’re not familiar at all. We just moved to SoCal a few years ago from Chicago area (Notre Dame & Purdue’s alumni). And yes you’re correct 2018dad, engineering major is another tough competition too.
