My daughter got her housing assignment yesterday and we see that Move-in Mania will be on Wednesday August 13th. It looks like in the past, it was held on the Saturday just before classes start on Monday. With it now being on a Wednesday, it makes me wonder what the kids are going to do for the 5 days between move-in and beginning of classes. We are coming from out of state and it just seems to leave a lot of extra time to kill. I suppose we could move her in on Wednesday and then take off somewhere for a couple of days. I’m guessing you can still move-in at a later date but not get the help of the volunteer students. Any suggestions appreciated. Thanks.

We are still waiting for my son’s housing assignment letter to arrive, but he was just at Camp War Eagle and everyone was told move-in was Saturday, August 16th, which struck me as maybe too little time before classes begin. I do see from the link posted the Housing Office has Wednesday the 13th as the date. I guess a bunch of us are going to look for some clarification. We have a 900+ mile road trip one-way too.

I think it was a Saturday move in last year but classes didn’t start until the following Wednesday. This year is a Wednesday move-in with classes starting the following Monday.

I was mistaken about last year’s move-in date. I did some searching around on the web and for the last two years the move-in date was 5 days before classes start. So this year’s date is consistent with the past pattern. We will be flying our daughter out with suitcases and plan to ship some boxes. The rest of the stuff we will buy locally. Just trying to plan our stay. I guess we will have to be flexible and if we end up with some extra time, we will go play tourist.

The move in letter hasn’t made it here yet. I suppose we’ll call Monday if we don’t get it then. D wants to do recruitment so I believe she moves in on the 9th. She’d move in today if I’d let her!

How far do we have to schlep stuff into the quad? I didn’t see much parking or places to get close to the dorms.

She will be in the quad and stayed there for camp war eagle. The room was very awkwardly laid out with one bed essentially having to be right in the middle of the room. Are all rooms laid out like that? It also had two of the biggest closets I’ve ever seen in a dorm room.

I think the rooms are all close to the same size - small. However, my sons room last year and his new room this summer and which will also be his room next year are identical with the most efficient layout being 1 bed parallel against the hall wall and 1 bed parallel against the window wall with the two desks butted up next to each other between the beds and the dressers next to each other between the bathroom and the closet. Not much room but they figure it out. Bed on risers with fridge and storage underneath. Sturdy plastic drawers were a necessity in the bottom of the closet. My son likes the bed by the window so he has given up the large closet for that.

Eyemamom - Moving in early is wonderful - she will be moving in 1 day after the band kids. You will get a drive up/drop off time and dash tag as your permit for being there. You unload and move your car - usually mom and child take stuff up while dad parks car somewhere else. However, since only my sons roommate was moving in the same time as he was last year - we didn’t have to move the car at all. We did not get our move-in time/tag until June 30 last year…they kept sending letters/emails saying it was coming but it didn’t come until what I thought was very late but that may just be coordinating with the band folks.

I seem to recall that we received a lot of information about activities going on for freshman between move-in and 1st day of class - however, band kids were busy with their own activities so my son wasn’t able to participate and I really didn’t pay too much attention.

Glad to hear they will have activities for freshman between move-in and first day of class. Nothing in the housing assignment material mentioned that and our daughter hasn’t attended CWE yet. We are feeling better about the set up and timing of things. Thanks.

^^ Jeeves I may have spoken too soon…I just searched old emails and can’t locate anything other than emails from the Auburn Methodist and Baptist student unions for get-togethers. I may have some paper/flyers that came in the mail of freshman preclass activities but I would have tossed those - you may want to check with the admissions counselors.

My son and I went to Camp War Eagle last week and they mentioned lots of activities for the first week. It took a lot of searching, but I found a link to the information. The video is from last year, but the information is from this year. There is even an app that they can download with all the schedule information so they don’t miss anything.

It looks like a blast!

I don’t think kids need planned activities every second of their lives. I can’t imagine any will have a tough time figuring out how to spend their time. They’ll need to decorate their rooms, meet floormates, explore the campus, buy their books, figure out where their classes are, they can walk to town, go out and eat, hang out, sleep late, go to the gym, etc. I don’t really understand the need to keep kids entertained with organized events.

Jeeves, there is also a Blues and Bar-b-que dinner on move in day.
Eyemamom, I agree kids don’t need activities for every second. You mentioned your daughter is going through Rush (sorority recruitment). She will likely make many friends during that time and will be ahead of others who are just arriving. Even so, the app will help them keep up with the events they don’t want to miss, freeing them up for more spontaneous activities with new friends.
