I totally had a typo on that last thread, the years got ahead of me!
Anywho, I'm a current UT student at UT and love chancing and helping out future transfers! I was once a transfer from Texas State University. If you would like a chance, format as follows:

Current college
Current GPA
College applied to
Major
List extra curriculars
Number of letters of Rec and who wrote them

I currently go to NVC
Between a 3.47 and a 3.7 (I’m waiting for my bio teacher to put in my exam)
COLA and UGS
Psychology (BS)
Community Service - 100+ hours
A lot of stuff from highschool
(maybe PTK depending on the exam)
3 letters
1 from my english prof.
1 from my manger at the med clinic I work at
1 from my Community Service head.

Saborak: your credentials seem really good. Can I ask how your essays are looking or what you plan to write them about? COLA really puts emphasis on essay quality, not just GPA!

I’m writing 3 essays, I’ve been working on them since September. They’re looking pretty good!
My topic for Essay A is undecided at the moment, I am having a lot of difficulties with this one actually.
My topic for Essay C, is a single mother who didn’t go to school; pretty much how hard she worked to make sure I had a good head on my shoulders.
My topic for Essay E, is the issue of military parents.

Those sound like unique topics. The key to essays is keeping them brief and personal. If you like, I can read over any parts or the whole essay if you message them to me. I’m happy to help! Good luck!

What is the deal with the recommendation letter? How do I include it to my admission file? Should I just come by the admission office in my area and give it to them or do the professor have to mail it themselves?

The recommendation letter can be sent either way. You can mail it to the admission center yourself, the writer of the letter can mail it to the admission center themself, or you can physically bring it into the admissions, and they will stamp it and keep it.

Thank you @DeeGeeErbear!
I just found out my finishing GPA is a 3.7 It’s not great, but it’s good enough to give me a chance. I was originally going to apply for BioChemistry at CNS but I don’t have a calculus credit. Do you think I should try for it?

Texas A&M University - College Station
3.2 this semester – hoping to bring up during the spring semester
Cockrell School of Engineering
Civil Engineering
TONS from high school, and a freshman leadership organization in college
I don’t have any letters of recommendation because, going to such a large university, none of my professors know me personally. Any suggestions on who to ask for recommendations? Are they even required, or are they just really helpful in supplementing your application?
Also, does UT take into account the difficulty of the school you currently attend? Because I know it is much harder to get a beautiful GPA at A&M than it would be at, say, a community college or satellite school.

and why are you asking DeeGeeErbear (who is not in CNS) and me (who is not even at UT)?
If the website says one thing and you heard something different (rumors???), the ONLY way to find out is directly from UT.

I remember reading CNS site last year and the year before, especially about Math since my D took AP Calculus at school. The Math readiness requirements (at least for freshmen) look new for me, I don’t remember seeing them before.
Since UT is trying to improve 4 year graduation rates, and failing calculus is one of the main reasons why graduation can be delayed, it’s very possible that these rules are new.

Also, since my D took AP calculus in high school, and later retook it at UT, and the difference was HUGE, I would suggest that you take this class at community college while you can. CC calculus would be much easier to pass.
And IF a student is not able to get a good grade at CC (preferably A), UT Math classes would be too difficult for him/her.

COLA is a safe bet, most people who have a lower GPA than the competitive 3.6 mostly get in with great resumes and essays. I wouldn’t change your first choice major to CNS if you really want to go to UT. Like YaYa pointed out, I am not certain about the Calculus requirement being necessary to getting accepted. I do know that two years ago, an old friend of my brother’s who transferred to UT from UTSA, got accepted into CNS first, but then the summer before she enrolled she HAD to take a math class, and she got a D in it. Her acceptance was NOT revoked, however. So, I guess my point is if you go for CNS at UT, get accepted, you still might have to take Calculus regardless before you enroll. If Calculus isn’t your thing, I would go the COLA route for sure, which I’m pretty positive will get you into UT! :D

Erinbieds: Welcome to the burnt orange side, Aggie! glad you chose Austin. Your GPA as of right now is pretty low for engineering, although if you have the right credentials, I would say a 3.5 would work for Cockrell. As far as recommendation letters, I’d say they NEVER hurt to have on the side. I believe the best candidates to write them for you, need to either be professionals with engineering backgrounds, or UT grads you may know to recommend you for the university. My 3 letters were from 2 UT grads (the mayor of my old town and my dad’s business partner) and the last from my college professor. So, I definitely think you should look into having some written. And for your last question, I’m very sorry to say that UT does not care where you went to school previously. Texas A&M is the same as the local community college. I think what would help you out at A&M, however, is your involvement in bigger clubs that say, community colleges do not offer. But, I’m sorry my friend. It’s all a level playing field.

Holistic review does not “guarantee” that they look at your previous school and consider the level of difficulty. It’s possible, but I’ve learned that it really doesn’t have much effect nor is consistent.

Yaya, I didn’t mean to offend when I said I already knew. I was just looking for some advice. Thank you for your help though, I really appreciate it!

Thank you DeeGeeErbear, COLA definitely is going to be my first option then. I’ll take my calculus and then I’ll probably just end up internally transferring!

Hey! I’m wondering if I could get chanced. I didn’t take my admission freshman year due to some money issues but I’m now planning on applying for transfer as a sophomore to UT :D

Current college: UT Dallas
Current GPA: definitely between a 3.8 - 3.9, I’m still waiting for some final grades to be posted, but it can’t go lower than that
College applied to: College of Natural Sciences
Major: Computer Science
List extra curriculars:
College:
Filipino Student Association
University Food Bank Volunteer (10+ hours)
I didn’t get involved too much during first semester because I was settling in and it was hectic
High School:
100+ volunteer hours
lots of clubs
orchestra
Number of letters of Rec and who wrote them: I have none because I didn’t get to know any of my proffs personally and honestly I’m not too worried about this section but eh

I’ll be writing my essays over the break, but honestly they will be my weakest point, but I will still try my best!

Other than that I feel a little confident but am still worried. I’ll have over 30 credits by the end of this semester so I think I should qualify to the transfer process already as a sophomore, and I’ve satisfied my calculus requirement by taking calc 1 this semester.

Current college: ACC
Current GPA: 3.5
College applied to: 1st choice CoLA, 2nd Natural Sciences
Major: Would like to double major in Chinese and Biology. Would like to transfer for second major within the school (assuming I get in, of course).
List extra curriculars: Did a lot of club stuff in high school and volunteered in a hospital. Don’t know if I even want to include this since it it was in high school though. Member of Phi Theta Kappa, but haven’t been able to really do much since I’ve been doing mostly 18 hours per semester (I have 55 semesters after my 3rd semester)/
Number of letters of Rec and who wrote them: I can get one from Chinese professor for sure, and one from an ex-high school teacher (but, again, not sure since it was from high school).

My GPA also dropped significantly from a C in Precalc, but I ended up getting an A in Calculus and Calc 2 if that changes anything.

Hi, I was wondering if when determining your GPA for admission, does the committee include all credit you have?? Or do they only include what’s most recent?? I have credits from a community college last summer, and credits from a university right now. Hope I made sense haha thanks!
