Fall 2014 Transfer Thread

has anyone completed their essays and turned in their application for Fall 2014 yet?

I’m having trouble writing the Statement of Purpose just because I’m not sure exactly what is it they want us to write. Is it just an essay explaining my special circumstances? Or should I say why I would like to go to UT? How long is a an essay with 120 eighty character lines?

For the Topic E, the issue of importance to you, should I cite sources and include statistics from websites and such? Or should I just talk about why the issue is important to me and why I feel strongly about it?

Current college: Texas A&M…I know
Current gpa: 3.93 at A&M (15 cr.) but transfer gpa is 3.96 (27 cr.)
College applied to: CNS
Major: computer science

I was wondering what my chances are and if me not having 30 hours until the end of this semester hurts me at all

Current college: Texas A&M
Current GPA: 3.79
College applied to: Liberal Arts
Major: History
List extra curriculars: only my sorority… which has been very time consuming but has incorporated a lot of community service which i’m going to try and emphasize

high school:
quite a few more extra curriculars & community service than my first semester in college

Number of letters of Rec and who wrote them: none

My question is, how important are essays? I know my GPA is higher than the average for COLA and i’m wondering if i should really work hard on the essays or just throw something together. Also, are letters of rec really that necessary?

MC and mandler, you both obviously have great chances for UT transfer admission. My sister is also applying to transfer from A&M to UT with similar stats. Must be a common theme.

Your essays could hurt you if they are subpar even if your GPA is good. UT’s admissions committee reads every essay and every resume.

@gigs94 The statement of purpose is just you explaining why you want to come to UT and what you want to do with your life after. For example when I transferred in I wrote about how I want to be a VFX artist to help build the magical worlds that are in movies. The 120 line limit thing is just how long your essay can be. That doesn’t mean you should write that much. I would stick to as close to 500 words as you can for any of your essays. You don’t want to write too much because the people looking at your essay also have to look at a bunch of other essays. However you still want to make it long enough for you to make your point.

The issue of importance is your personal opinion on a subject. I wouldn’t use citations. It’s not a research paper, it’s a personal essay. You just want to relate the issue into whatever reason you want to come to UT.

If you want I can send over my essays so you can have an example. I didn’t actually get accepted into the RTF program as a transfer at first (only got into UGS) but that was mostly because my GPA was only a 3.57 or something. However I managed to get into the RTF program afterwards the day before the semester started because the dean liked me passion so much but I’m not sure how my essays played into that.

That goes for anybody really. If you want an example of a statement of purpose/personal issue essay send me a PM.

Tarrant county college
3.9
engineering
petroleum/chem
almost none extracurriculars
letter from physics, chem and calculus

I have a question. People in this thread mention about the “resume.” Is the resume a part of the application on Apply Texas website or do I have to type my own resume like when I applying for a job?

It is a separate resume, but you also need to enter info on the ApplyTexas app.

Here’s the info from UT. It has some examples.

Hello guys! If ya’ll don’t mind, I’d like to post my stats for UT as well.
-College: I’m currently an undecided freshman at UH and I took 13 hours of classes the past fall and I took a winter class. So I currently have
16 hrs and I’ll be taking 14 hrs this spring semester.
-GPA: 4.0
-I’ll be applying to petroleum engineering as my first major and undecided business for the second.
-EC’s:
High School-
Ace Mentor (2012 - 2013) : Intern
Clubs:
Mu Alpha Theta
American Red Cross
Youth Expanding Services Club
School Robotics Team (2009 - 2011)
Community service: 243 total hours in ONLY high school.

College:
Clubs:
Geology Club
Math Club
Science Club
Internship:
Ace Mentor Program(Intern)
Volunteer hrs- 50 hours only in college.
-I don’t have any rec letters. I don’t know a lot of professors well enough to ask them for a rec letter. I don’t know if it will benefit me a lot.

I posted a shorter version of my resume above. Hope it’s not too messy. Along with my stats, I do have a few questions to ask about the UT admissions. My essays are all done and I’ll be submitting my online app in a day or two. I’m worried. Even though I have a 4.0, Do you guys think I’ll be able to get into petroleum engineering with it? I don’t have any rec letters. Would that harm my chances of getting in to my major? I know I’ll be receiving my decision pretty late because UT admissions said they’d have to wait for my final transcript after I finish my 14 hours in the spring semester. I’m really worried. Hope my stats are good enough. Thanks for the help in advance!

@rohanchittur:

Your 4.0 is most definitely strong enough for petrol engineering. I don’t think not having letters of rec “hurt” you, but rather better your chances if you do have them. With a 4.0 though, I’d say you’re pretty much well off. You have extra curriculars, and I’m assuming you have taken necessary classes to be admitted into Cockrell. My only advice is if you are uncertain about getting into UT, I would not apply with business as your second major. McCombs is rarely granted as a second choice. Economics in COLA is a great second choice and is still transferable into business if that is what you desire. Just my advice! Good luck, you stand a great chance.

@DeeGeeErbear:

Could you please chance me? I put my stats on the previous page.

@DeeGeeErbear

Thank you so much for the reassurance! I do want to transfer into engineering. But I heard that if I put another field of engineering major as my second choice, then UT won’t consider me again for my second choice major. For example: If my first major is petroleum engr and my second is mechanical engr. IF UT decides to reject me from my first major, will they RECONSIDER me for my second major? which is another engineering major (Mechanical engineering). Just cause of that, my second major is business. Otherwise I’d like to apply to another engineering major as my second option. Hope my question makes sense. Thanks!

@rohan: Engineering will most definitely have to reconsider you for your second choice, whether it be engineering or business. I think putting a less popular engineering major for the second choice is perfectly fine! They will have to reassess you and reconsider you for sure.

@txgirl: first of all, I applaud you for taking 16 hours, that’s devotion right there! Are you an in state student? If out of state, a 3.5 for Cola may be a bit low. But the other stuff you have extra curricular make up for that!

Hello everyone!! Here are my stats tell me what you think…
I’m at a cc
I’ve completed 32 credit hours
GPA: 3.53
Phi Theta Kappa (PTK)member; Presidents list 2013
Volunteer work: I’ve volunteered on 3 films at a local university, museum, hospital, political campaign.
Letter of recommendation: President of PTK
I’m applying into the Rtf program

Currently at UNLV.
3.73 GPA, 4.0 for past two years.
76 credits earned
Undergraduate research assistant in genetics laboratory
Two letters of rec. One from genetics professor, one from history professor whose son I tutored in Chemistry.
~30 hours volunteering at small clinic
Have also worked full time all through college
Aiming for biomedical engineering, which is not offered at UNLV. I have listed biochemistry as my second choice.

@ABC243 I had a 3.57 and got denied into RTF, only UGS. Granted I didn’t have any volunteer work or any groups but still. You have a medium shot at getting in depending on the applicant pool. You should be good for UGS though.

@missbrittany I’m pretty sure there is a limit on how many hours you can transfer but you should have a decent shot.

@jpgarcia6 what’s UGS?

@gigs94 I’m still writing my essays.

UGS is undergraduate studies
