Itzsay: I’m not quite sure what 180 character lines may be, but my essays were like a page and a half? That got me accepted. I think the briefer the essay, the better.

DaBaDee: You’re GPA is great for engineering. I think if you get three letters of rec, you have a really good chance. Strive for a 4.0 this semester too!

Saborak: College essays are very hard to construct! When writing mine, I wrote what turned out to be 3 different copies of both my essays. First draft, I write ANYTHING and EVERYTHING I want to say. It isn’t even cohesive. Second draft, I go through and take out what doesn’t make sense or elaborate on good points I made. Third draft, I polish any grammar errors or word choices. For finishing a college essay, it is always a good idea to have a thesis that matches an intro paragraph thesis. Reiterate all your points that you made throughout in your conclusion, and tie up any loose ends!

Slidji: Applying for a college and declaring a major is WAY better than going in undeclared. Admissions likes to know you have a direction for your education. I’ve seen very little people actually get accepted undeclared. (they had like 3.9s and 4.0s) With all of your extra curriculars listed, I’d say that will help you get into UT. Make sure your essays are top par, because COLA takes into account your essay quality and not your GPA. (which is already good enough for COLA.) I’d say work hard on your essays, get some letters of rec, and get a great GPA this semester, and then you’re golden for UT!

Hope everyone’s semesters are getting off to a good start. UT Fall 2014 will be here before you know it! ;D

I am currently a freshman with 3.4 wanting to transfer to UT in the Fall. Will have 31 credits after spring. One good rec from my English Comp professor and one good rec from my summer employer. Two strong essays. On a club sport team, involved in a lot of leadership programs, solid community service. Applying to College of Education. Hope to raise my GPA to 3.5 after spring. Chance me, please.

@DeeGeeErbear is there a way i can contact you so that i can send you my essays to give me some feedback/let me know if they are up to par for COLA or UGS.

Hey y’all,
Shoot me essays through private message, if you click on my username you can send me one. Or, for stats you can do the private message, post them on my profile, or post them on this thread! Xoxo

I’m looking to transfer into UT austin for the Fall, could anyone chance me please?

College: Local CC
First Choice:Mathematics
Second Choice: Computer Science
GPA: 3.7
Precalc:A, Calc1:B, Calc2: B, Calc 3:A, Differential Equations:A, Linear Algebra: A
1 letter of recommendation
Very few extra curricular
The essays are ok, I’m still working them, not satisfied with them.

I’d say you have a good shot but if I were you I would put UGS or COLA as your second choice. If you put your second choice in the same college as your first then it’s pointless because if you get denied from your first you get denied from your second. Not to mention I’m pretty sure CS is harder to get into. Speaking of which, why not Computer Science as your first choice?

Also if you get denied and get into UGS or COLA CS (not sure about Mathematics) is open to internal transfers. You can just transfer into CNS after your first semester.

That’s good to know, I’ll change my second option to UGS as a safety net then, I like computer science and mathematics a lot but I’m interested GREATLY in many specific aspects of math theory which is what I’m looking the most to hopefully get into. How hard is internal transfer? Is it really a viable option? I don’t want to find myself wasting too much time and money ;(.

Thanks for the info/review ! Greatly appreciated ;)

Like I said I don’t know about math but CS is open as long as you have a 2.5 GPA and not above 60 hours in residence. I know this because I’m planning on double majoring in RTF and Computer Science. I don’t think math is super duper competitive though. You should have a relatively easy time internally transferring in (which you shouldn’t really need to anyway since you have a pretty good GPA already).

How important are letters of rec? I don’t know any of my professors that well and I’m applying to a totally different college at UT than what I’m doing at my current university. Will they really make or break the decision?

University of Houston
3.47
UT Austin, Cockrell School of Engineering
Mechanical Engieering
ASME-UH Webmaster, NSCS, MSA
1 letter from my physics prof
1 letter from my pols science prof
l letter from my chem prof…

I really need help with Essays particularly Essay A. I dont know what is it exactly asking for. Could I write about my career goals which may be a statement of purpose?

@damnlol1 to submit a letter of recommendation you have to click manage document upload requests and submit a request for UT to personally send the person that you want a recommendation from an email. The person you are receiving a recommendation from will then submit the recommendation and any additional information to UT through the portal that is provided.

I have a couple quick question for you. I’m planning to transfer to UT from Texas A&M this fall. I meet all of the requirements to get in, but the only concern I have is that UT requires a minimum of 30 hours. I will have 46 hours done by the end of the semester, but 18 of those hours are AP credits that do show up on my transcript as completed hours. Will UT consider those hours? Do I need to also send them my AP scores like I did for A&M or is my transcript sufficient? Thanks.

Austin Community College
4.0 with 49 credits
all 4 business indicator classes completed
Red Mccombs school of business

Total Letter of recommendations:4) statistics, chemistry and calculus professor
and one from my previous boss my first ever accounting job transfer manual accounting to computerized accounting system all by myself.

My essays: topic A: committment/standing by my decision to finish my edcucation/ first one ever to move to Texas from family all by myself
C: how I am a better student now with imporved study habits etc
E: financial responsibility

texasforever13: Letters of rec will not “make or break you.” They are primarily to enhance/extend your resume so you appear more well rounded to the admissions committee. (they NEVER hurt!)

Damnlol1: Letters of rec can be mailed into the admissions office, or uploaded on the Be A Longhorn website. It is easier to just mail them or bring them physically in, if you’re in the austin area.

sbaweja: A 3.4 might be a bit low for Cockrell, maybe boost your GPA as high as you can? A 3.6 is generally a safer bet to be accepted. As for statement of purpose, that is an essay centering on your purpose to being accepted at UT. You can discuss your future plans about being admitted to UT, like how active you will be in the community, or how it can propel you to achieve your dream job in engineering.

macattack13: You should be fine if the AP credits show up on your final transcript. If not, then I would obtain a copy that do show them completed.

pencil787: You should be fine with a 4.0. Stats look great!

Current School: UH
Current GPA-3.4 (Trying to make it a 3.5)
31 credits earned so far (AP Credits)
Extra Curricular
