Decision: Accepted

Date applied: December 1 - Yay for procrastination
Date decision postmarked/received: Received January 27
Accepted at which school/major at USC: Viterbi - Astronautical Engineering

Stats:
SAT Total: 2130 M: 710, CR: 730, WR: 690,
ACT: 32
SAT Subject Tests: Math II: 770, Chem: 730

Subjective:

Essays: My common app was alright - I changed a lot of things after I submitted and I think it’s much better now, but I guess it was decent enough to begin with. I liked my USC supplements. They were pretty last minute, but very honest. I’m passionate about my major which helped. I didn’t take the short answers very seriously, which I regretted, but it worked apparently.
Teacher Recs: 7/10 for both. Pretty good.
Counselor Rec: Didn’t read but we have a good relationship so I’m assuming it was good.
EC highlights:
Student Council - 4 Years
Leadership:
Student Body President
Student Body Secretary
Sophomore Class President
Freshmen Class President
Community Service - 4 years
Leadership:
Planned various projects, specifically one that sponsored 3 students in Honduras for a year of education. There are others but I focused on that one the most.
President of a few other clubs.

Location/Person:
State or Country: Nevada
School Type: Public, ~2000 students
Ethnicity: Painfully white
Gender: Male
Other Factors, hook?: Sort of first generation college student, depending on your definition. Parents both attending college for a few semesters but never graduated. Not much besides that though.

General Comments, scholarship chances, status info, going to USC…?: Presidential Finalist. I’m really surprised, I wasn’t expecting anything. I saw people saying they saw on the portal or received their packet already so I figured I had no chance. Checked the mail just to be sure, almost had a heart attack when I saw the fat USC packet. Finally feeling like the hard work has paid off!

Decision: Accepted!!!

Date applied: Early November

Date decision postmarked/received: Received January 28

Accepted at which school/major at USC: Dornsife

Stats:

SAT Total: X M: X, CR: X, WR: X,

SAT Subject Tests: Math II: 800
GPA-UW/W: 4.00/4.45
Rank: 1/400
AP/IB classes: 1 sophomore year, 2 jr, 3 sr, 8 honors classes

Subjective:

Essays: common app good, supplements well-researched
Teacher Recs: probably good
Counselor Rec: probably good
EC highlights: extensive medical research, intern with congressman, president of 2 clubs…too many to list here

State or Country: Illinois
School Type: Public (one of best in state)
Ethnicity: White
Gender: Male

Other Factors, hook?: X

General Comments, scholarship chances, status info, going to USC…?: TRUSTEE FINALIST! FIGHT ON!

Decision: Accepted

Date applied: 12-1 (11:59 PM)

Date decision postmarked/received: 1-27

Accepted at which school/major at USC: Annenberg School of Journalism, Broadcast and Digital Journalism

Stats:

SAT Total: 2180 M: 760, CR: 700, WR: 720
SAT Subject Tests: Math II: 730
GPA-UW/W: 3.88/4.33
Rank: N/A
AP/IB classes: AP Calc BC (5), AP English (5), AP Lit and AP Spanish this year. School only offers a few APs though

Subjective:

Essays: Probably one of my biggest strengths, especially CommonApp essay (depending on reader)
Teacher Recs: Private school recs, so probably really good
Counselor Rec: Private school recs, so probably really good
EC highlights: Years of professional writing and radio experience, 2 year varsity basketball captain, much music whatnot, spokesman/inaugural youth ambassador (or something) for foundation of disease I have

Location/Person:

State or Country: California (SF Bay Area)
School Type: Small private
Ethnicity: White caucasian
Gender: Male

Other Factors, hook?: Interviewing was likely a help. Fairly low income, probably not enough to make a big difference. Significant and unique journalism opportunities so I may have out-lucked other Annenberg applicants having found some good opportunities early on. Grew up with and pretty much beat unusual brain disease (CommonApp Essay basis) so that might be a big help as it really impacted me severely.

General Comments, scholarship chances, status info, going to USC…?: Actually applied for Communications major at Annenberg but specified in interview that I was torn between Communications and Broadcast Journalism so either would be fine going in. Candidate for full merit scholarship (they didn’t specify which type) and I’d expect at least 70% need-based scholarship even without it because I can’t pay too much at all. If that all works out (plus Cal grants), I will for sure go to USC. It was deadlocked with Stanford for first choice and I didn’t get into Stanford so luckily I don’t have to choose between them. Probably would’ve gone with USC anyway. I intend to also major in business. My next choices would be Penn, Northwestern, NYU, and Michigan. BEST OF LUCK TO ALL, especially if you’re like me and financial aid could be a deal-breaker.

Decision: Accepted

Date applied: 12/1

Date decision postmarked/received: 11/24 received 11/29

Accepted at which school/major at USC: Viterbi

ACT: N/A
SAT Subject Tests: Literature: 800, Math II: 780, Physics: 740
GPA-UW/W: 3.988, no weighted GPA
Rank: school doesn’t rank but close to top in class
AP/IB classes: Taken: Calc AB 5, Physics B 5, English Language 5; will take another 4 or 5 this year

Subjective:

Essays: Honestly, didn’t put as much work into these essays as I should have, but I guess it didn’t hurt me. I think my CA essay was 8/10 and all USC essays were 7/10
Teacher Recs: solid, probably 9/10 for both
Counselor Rec: 9-10/10
EC highlights: Captain of lacrosse and state champion cross country teams, President of NHS

Location/Person:

State or Country: US
School Type: Private Catholic
Ethnicity: White
Gender: M

Other Factors, hook?: Will be a NMF

General Comments, scholarship chances, status info, going to USC…?: Presidential candidate. Hopefully financial aid comes through. I know that I’m going to receive at least half automatically, but no idea if that will do me any good. USC is definitely a top option if it isn’t prohibitively expensive.

So excited I get to finally do this!

Decision: Accepted

Teacher Recs: I’m sure they were good. I had a good relationship with both of them.

General Comments, scholarship chances, status info, going to USC…?: I didn’t think I would get in let alone be a Presidential scholarship finalist! I’m excited, but even if I do get the scholarship, I’m not sure if I’ll be able to attend. But we’ll see. Waiting to hear from Rice, GWU, Carnegie Mellon, MIT; Accepted into USC, UPitt, UMD; Rejected from Stanford

Subjective:

Essays: Wrote about the things I love and the things people say they love about me. That’s the trick to killing interviews and essays. Actually applied to Viterbi as well, but the two essays for that were extraneous and it was my second choice. I was pretty lifted when I wrote them and I think it actually helped.

Teacher Recs: idk. Never read them. They were probably pretty good.

Counselor Rec: Confident that she wrote amazing things about me. KEEP A GOOD RELATIONSHIP WITH YOUR
COUNSELOR ALL FOUR YEARS. I feel like it’s not stressed enough

EC highlights: Track and Field, Beta Club, Cross Country, Mathnasium Instructor, Math Team, Academic Team

Ethnicity: Black. More specifically, My parents were born and raised in Nigeria and moved here to have me
Gender: Male

Other Factors, hook?:

General Comments, scholarship chances, status info, going to USC…?: I am a National Achievement Finalist, so this college is at the top of my list right now. Got into a bit of trouble for possession of illicit substances this year, but I explained it all in the mandatory letter. Guess they thought it best to overlook it haha. If you are willing to work hard enough, you can make it in. Good luck and Godspeed to all applicants. Hope you find what you’re looking for, wherever you end up going to college.

Accepted at which school/major at USC: Dornsife/Narrative Studies

GPA-UW/W: 4.0/4.2
Rank: N/A
AP/IB classes: AP English Language (5), currently taking AP English Literature, AP Statistics, and AP Spanish Language

Subjective:

Essays: I wrote my Common App essay about my process in writing a book/fleshing out realistic characters, highlighting my dedication to the art of fiction writing. I spent a fair amount of time on both that and my supplement, where I talked about my community service helping teach elementary schools creative writing, as well my passion for stories. I think they were very good.

Teacher Recs: I chose two teachers who not only knew me very well (private school), but were part of a self-made independent study course. One of my teachers in particular I’m close to outside of class, and have been since freshman year. I imagine very good.

Counselor Rec: Very good - the counselors keep an eye on us since freshman year, and I spoke to her and we got to know each other well especially during the college season.

EC highlights: My biggest thing is writing - I’ve written 20 full length novels, where some have faired well in contests, and I self published one over the fall. Otherwise, my short fiction has won a few awards (Scholastic Writing Awards and such), I wrote a one-act play for my school’s one act festival junior year, I made the layout and was editor of the school’s literary magazine, I’m head of the creative writing club, and I’m a staff writer and senior editor on the school newspaper. Most of my community service involved working at elementary school as a TA.

Location/Person:

State or Country: California (South Bay)
School Type: Independent school
Ethnicity: Caucasian
Gender: Female

Other Factors, hook?: I don’t know if actually being from the LA area helps… Uh, my neighbor is a volunteer at admissions, and knows my area’s rep well, so I don’t know if he put in a good word. Otherwise, hah, I guess they found me interesting.

General Comments, scholarship chances, status info, going to USC…?: Trustee finalist, and man, I did not see it coming! I think that whether or not I get the scholarship, I’ll be attending USC this fall. I’m excited! :D

Decision: Accepted

Date applied: December 1st

Date decision postmarked/received: Received 3/27

Accepted at which school/major at USC: Dornsife, Undecided

Stats:

SAT Total: 2010 (superscore) M: 640, CR: 670, WR: 700
ACT: 28
SAT Subject Tests: US History 760, Math 2 670, Japanese 600
GPA-UW/W: 3.55/4.02
Rank: 47/502
AP/IB classes: APUSH, AP English Lang and Comp (both 5s), AP Euro (4), AP Chem, AP MacroEcon, AP Calc AB senior year

Subjective:

Essays: Probably what saved my application in spite of my “numbers.” Spent a lot of time on the supplement and got some help from my guidance counselor about how to make them stand out.

Teacher Recs: Two teacher recs; the teachers loved me and even though I didn’t get to read them, I’m sure they were amazing. They focused on how I was only a decent student in the beginning but excelled in second semester (I had gone from straight B’s to straight A’s in my junior yer pretty much). 10/10

Counselor Rec: My counselor loves me. I visit her multiple times a week, and we’ve talked a lot. 10/10

EC highlights: Varsity Lacrosse freshman year, varsity tennis the remaining three years (captain senior year), Student Class Council all four years, peer tutor for a year, VP of K-pop club senior year (member for all four), AVPA Film senior year. Spent 2 summers volunteering at the nearby elementary school as a Japanese teacher for K-1. Lots of other miscellaneous volunteer stuff (too lazy to list). Went on a delegation program to South Korea last summer (this is what I talked about in the common app essay; my selling point basically)

Location/Person: SoCal

State or Country: California
School Type: Medium sized public? About 2000 students.
Ethnicity: African-American
Gender: Female

Other Factors, hook?: I had an interview with an admissions officer and I think he really liked me. It lasted about half an hour and I feel that it went really well. I also sent in my mid-year grades as soon as they were official. I had straight A’s despite taking my hardest classes of high school, so that probably demonstrated that I have the potential?

General Comments, scholarship chances, status info, going to USC…?: Cost of attendance is crazy, but I’m for sure going! Been my dream school since sophomore year. Hopefully they’ll be nice with FA…? Ecstatic to be a trojan though, I really thought I had no chance. Fight On!

[/ul] General Comments:[list]
[*] -____- Really now XD. My USC supplements did suck, but yay, out of the 12 schools that I applied to, only rejections from MIT, (presumably) Stanford, and freaking USC. XD

Accepted: RD Dornsife, Earth Sciences (major did show on FA page earlier this week)

Objective - ACT 33
GPA 3.95 UW/4.1 W
no school ranking, but competitive CA high school, probably top 20%
1 AP, 2 honors (weak spot on resume)
Subjective - Essays - ok, hard to say
Teacher Recs - didn’t see but expect they were very good
ECs - part time job, 3 sports x 4 years, 300+ community service
2 clubs, one officer position (not a collegiate athlete)
Other - Caucasian female, will be touring over spring break to USC as well as UCSB and
Cal Poly. Rejected at UCLA and UCSD

This is for the kids with the low scores! We all have a chance to be Trojans!

Decision: Accepted

Date applied: November 26

Date decision postmarked/received: Received 3/27

Accepted at which school/major at USC: Annenberg, Public Relations

Stats:

SAT Total: 1760 (superscore) M: 500, CR: 590, WR: 620
ACT: 29
SAT Subject Tests: US History 760, Math 2 570, World History 600
GPA-UW/W: 3.8/4.21
Rank: 29/570
AP/IB classes: Full IB diploma

Subjective:

Essays: Probably the strongest part of my application, because as you can see, my scores and grades are not the best. I wrote about the thrift store being the place where I was most at peace for my common app essay, and my supplements showed how passionate I was about PR and USC’s Annenberg.

Teacher Recs: 2 teacher recs, both I didn’t read, but they were teachers that really enjoyed me, I hope. One of them was my journalism adviser, which probably helped me get into Annenberg.

Counselor Rec: My counselor is an angel, and we are very close. Her husband also works at USC.

EC highlights: award winning newspaper editor-in-chief, literary magazine editor-in-chief, co-founder and president of tutoring program that uses Skype to teach foreign students English, elected as co-public relations student government, co-public relations of link crew, in a signed band woth my sister, 2 sports freshman year

Location/Person: SoCal

State or Country: California
School Type: large competitive IB school with over 80 diploma candidates. About 2500 students.
Ethnicity: African-American
Gender: Female

Other Factors, hook: I interviewed with them and handed them my portfolio. Maybe because I’m in a signed band with my twin sister, also. I can’t really think of what made me stand out, if at all.

General Comments, scholarship chances, status info, going to USC…?: USC has been the dream for a long time, and I was so shocked, happily shocked of course. I cried for two hours, especially because both my twin and I got in, which we were afraid would not happen (she has a higher GPA and rank than me an I have a higher test score), but we are so grateful they took us both! I got into some great schools (UCSB, UC Berkeley, and Boston University) but USC is defnitely a dream come true. I hope I get some financial aid, I am planning to attend in the fall.

I thought I had no chance, because UCLA rejected me and UCSD waitlisted me, but always have faith in yourself!
