•Summer Activities: Chosen from top students in my school to participate in an exchange trip to Japan [summer after 11th]. Otherwise just work and theatre.

•Essays:
-Common App: 6-10/10? Really not sure if it’s good or not. Too personal to be comfortable letting anyone read. From my own judgement I’d say it’s fairly well written and compelling.
-Supplement: 9 or 10/10. Not going to lie, I was very proud of my supplemental essays. Put a lot of thought and time into them (and I think it payed off!).

•Teacher Recommendation:
[Didn’t read either]
-Chem teacher: 10/10 (said it was one of the best he’s ever written)
-English teacher: probably 8/10-ish (she says she writes very good recs)

•Counselor Rec: probably 7/10, don’t have a personal relationship. Probably all positive but generic.
•Additional Rec: x
•Interview: x

Other
•State (if domestic applicant): Minnesota
•Country (if international applicant): x
•School Type: I don’t know how to judge competitiveness. I’d say a fairly average public high school. Not particularly affluent nor impoverished. Rated in the top 15 of MN high schools if that means anything? Offers an above average amount of AP courses.
•Ethnicity: White
•Gender: Male
•Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): none

Reflection
•Strengths: Dedication to ECs, leadership positions, GPA, course rigor.
•Weaknesses: ACT math score, lack of subject tests, AP scores(?), not enough volunteering(?), white male, no major awards or lab/intern work.
•Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: I think my numbers were good enough to be considered for admission and my extracurriculars and particularly my essays pushed me over the edge. I knew USC was a good fit for me and did my best to show that in my supplement.
•Where else were you accepted/waitlisted/rejected: Accepted: U of M–Twin Cities (College of Science and Engineering). Rejected: Northwestern (McCormick), Stanford.
Waiting: Nowhere else, thank God.

General Comments, scholarship chances, status info, going to USC…?: It’s been a long and sometimes agonizing wait, and I’m relieved that I can finally say it’s been worth it. Over the last several months USC has become my top choice, and I am so honored to be granted admission. My 30 on ACT math and lack of subject tests had me worried, but I’m thankful USC was able to look past small weaknesses and truly look at me holistically. My fingers are crossed that financial aid works out and I’ll be able to call myself a Trojan this fall! Fight on!

Subjective:

Essays: He had an outstanding essay that talked about overcoming issues due to his hearing loss (right ear) and wanting to challenge himself academically as a way to be a role model for others. He showed that he actually did that with a huge upward trend in rigor and grades. Every woman that I let read it cried. (I don’t think he realized its emotional impact.)

Location/Person:

State or Country: Washington State
School Type: Large-ish public school
Ethnicity: Mexican American /white
Gender: Female

Other Factors, hook?: i’ve been told it could’ve been my mexican ethnicity, but this makes me wonder why i was rejected from almost all of my other schools (UC davis (waitlisted), UCLA, UCSD, Stanford haha) maybe it was my essays?? idk bahaha

General Comments, scholarship chances, status info, going to USC…?: I am not sure yet about any financial stuff, haven’t received that info yet. I hope i go to USC I would absolutely love to, but it is pricey so I’m waiting to see if i got any scholarships or aid.

I was so used to getting rejection letters (they literally were just rolling in throughout the week) i had become numb to it haha i waddled out to my mailbox and saw the USC packet and thought “oh, that’s a big envelope for a rejection letter, that’s rude of them to get us rejected people’s hopes up” hahaha I still am worried this was some kind of mistake!
Strengths: SAT… (And it’s not even that strong.) Essays
Weaknesses: GPA for sure.
Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: I honestly have no idea. LOL. Uhmm… strong essays and unique life experiences. Yeah. That sounds about right.
Where else were you accepted/waitlisted/rejected: Accepted: NYU Waitlisted: Boston College, Occidental
Rejected: Cal, UCLA, Pomona, Pitzer, UCSD, UC Irvine, Amherst, Barnard, Boston University,

General Comments:
I am so shocked beyond… infinity. After a whole bunch of rejections I was seriously thinking about A: fighting other people that are on the waitlist for BC, or B: I don’t know bc I didn’t really like the idea of community college.

USC was actually my first acceptance letter, and it was one of my top choices. All I have to say for you guys, is that don’t lose hope, because sometimes god takes away what you thought you would get to lead you to a better place. (not to get preachy on any one of you guys.)

I am definitely going to USC for sure, most likely probably. But all I have to say is that don’t give up hope, and I am so happy about today and everything and omg I’m definitely going to be a trojan, and I’m greatly looking forward to it.

General Comments, scholarship chances, status info, going to USC…?: X

Strengths: Stats
Weaknesses: extracurricular? and definitely recs… shudders
Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: I’m not that exceptional, haha I don’t really have anything interesting which is what private schools want
Where else were you accepted/waitlisted/rejected: Accepted: UC Davis, UCSD, UC Santa Barbara, Cal Poly SLO, University of Washington, UCLA, Berkeley
Rejected: Just USC!

General Comments: Not upset at all, I couldn’t have afforded it anyway and I somehow have gotten so many other great options(UCLA and Cal?! what even). A little surprised that out of all my schools, USC was the one to deny me. I guess the public school admissions like me haha!

Decision: Accepted
