Recommendations: Strong High School Recs; I plan to get an additional recommendation from my Religion and Gender Studies professor.

Gabby, you can’t expect a response (and find a need to bump) after 1 hour of having the post up.

My first question would be why you chose Oberlin, and what makes you not like it now. Did you apply to Brown previously, and if so, what was the result?

Hi Bruno,
I didn’t apply to Brown last year. I chose Oberlin because I thought I would enjoy being far away from home and exploring a new part of the US (I’m from the North East), I came from a progressive and academically rigorous school and was looking for a little more freedom in my next four years. Additionally, I came to Oberlin for the English, Creative Writing, and Theater departments.

In high school, I thought I wanted to pursue acting, but, I have realized (note, this is not a sudden realization, but rather one that has developed throughout high school and recently been fully realized) that acting is not what I want to do. Instead, I’d like to pursue Dramaturgy, but I also realize that to do that I don’t have to major in Theater. This semester I’ve been exploring a variety of classes and my favorite is my Religion/Gender Studies class, “Roots of Religious Feminism in North America”. I’ve decided that what I want to pursue is a double major in English and History with Religious Studies and Theater minors.

To go deeply into such interdisciplinary classes, I realize that I need to have a strong background in a variety of fields. Oberlin doesn’t offer a broad range of "survey"classes in their Religion or History departments. Brown does offer such classes and also offers a wide range of specifically-focused courses. Brown’s pass/no pass option would further enable and encourage me to take classes outside my comfort zone and explore. Brown offers the academic breadth and depth that I am missing at Oberlin.

Though my reasons for wanting to transfer are primarily academic, they are not entirely academic. My high school was small. Very small. Only 150 people in the school, but I loved it. This was, I think, because we were smack-dab in the middle of the city, so I was able to take advantage of many things outside of school to supplement my education. I though Oberlin would seem huge to me, but instead it feels like a sore thumb in the middle of a sleepy town. The school is much bigger than the surrounding area, but everything still feels isolated. Brown’s size and location are manageable enough that I won’t feel overwhelmed and big enough that I can take advantage of everything Providence (and Boston and New York) have to offer.

Ah, OK. Well, I have to say that if you are looking at a transfer so soon, they will take your high school record strongly into account. That makes your chances extremely poor I think. Transferring is tough anyway to a school like Brown, there typically are not a lot of slots available. For entry of Fall 2013 they had 1,769 applicants, only accepted 109, and 68 enrolled. That’s a lower admission rate than for freshman admission, I think.

I would advise looking at a number of less competitive schools as well.

@fallenchemist thank you for the advice. I will probably still apply to Brown, as I do think (if I could get in) it would be a terrific fit. What other schools would you advise looking at? Additionally, do you know when schools stop looking at high school transcripts?

I will think about other fits based on your desired areas of study. I agree you have nothing to lose applying to Brown except the fee and whatever it costs to have test scores and transcripts sent. I am not 100% sure, but I think most schools don’t ignore your SAT/ACT score and high school record unless you have finished 2 years of college.

I was admitted as a transfer during the past admission cycle with a pretty poor HS record, but I’m a Junior. Most transfers in my class are sophomores from excellent Universities (read: excellent HS records). I think your chances will be far greater if you apply as a Junior with a stellar college record, but you lose nothing by applying and if you are intent on trying, go for it and good luck!

Hey gabby. Aside from the high school GPA, your stats look pretty good to me (your SAT is a full 100 points higher than mine, and I got into Brown as a sophomore transfer this past year). From my experience, I’d say put the bulk of your effort into writing persuasive essays that convey why Brown in particular is a good fit for you. Collegiate leadership and teacher reqs are pretty critical, too; moreover, if you could shoot for a 3.8 GPA (or, even better, a 3.9/4.0), I think that you’d stand a decent chance. Let me know if you have any specific questions; this response doesn’t offer anything all too earth-shattering in and of itself haha.

I am a 1st year UC Berkeley student interested in applying for transfer to UPenn, Brown, and Columbia. This semester, I didn’t do as well as I should have and received a 3.73 GPA. I was on track to receive a 3.8-3.9 GPA but messed up on one of my finals, bringing my gpa down . I got a B+ in a not-so difficult math course . My high school gpa was around the same as my 1st semester college gpa. However, I have a very high SAT score (2350) and have several leadership positions and pretty good extracuricullars. Taking into account the information I gave you, including that UC Berkeley is known for difficult classes and that I’ve taken 19.5 units my first semester, how much lower do you think my chances are with a gpa of 3.73 than a gpa of let’s say 3.8 or 3.9? I want to know my chances
Hi everyone and good luck if you’re looking to apply!
Some info on me…
Looking to transfer to Brown from Sarah Lawrence College
College GPA: 3.9 (projected, calculated by myself through a form given by the college. Grades aren’t a big thing here. It’s all about the written evaluations teachers give at the end of the semester)
HS GPA: 3.98
SAT: 2010 (620 Reading; 650 Math; 740 Writing)
SAT Subjects: English Lit = 690; Math II = 650
ACT: 29
AP: Comp Sci 5; English Lit 5; Euro History 4; Calc BC 5; Gov 4
The school I’m at currently doesn’t have majors (gasp!) and only 3 classes a semester (double gasp!), so my studies are in Writing, Latin, and Film currently. Would love to explore more which is harder than expected at my school – part of why I’m looking to transfer.
High School ECs:
Editor of Literary Magazine
Organizer in French Club
Black Belt in Karate (also teaching classes)
Archery
Guitar Lessons
Soroptomist Award
College ECs:
Martial Arts Club
Christian Union
Screenwriter’s Workshop
Yoga classes
Reasons for Transferring:
The school is small in both land area and student body. Frankly, I feel a bit confined. The school is immensely liberal which can seem overwhelming and – dare I say – whiny at times. I’d feel more comfortable on a campus where the ratio of females to males is much closer to 50/50. I find the size and the experience I got from visiting Brown’s campus alluring from these certain confines. I love the freedom in choosing classes with distribution requirements and no general ed, but I’d still like to have enough classes to explore and develop on a certain path instead of the free-for-all I feel when it’s registration time at SLC. Basically I want a more traditional, but not too traditional, approach to education. I love how easy it is to access shops off campus in Providence. The traditions created a great solidarity, and I just fell in love with Brown when I visited. I applied Early Decision last year, was deferred, then sadly denied.
I’m still on the search for other schools to apply to if I’m not accepted to Brown ( :-S ), but I definitely have my eye on William & Mary. If anybody could give me my chances or any advice on the transfer process to Brown or the transfer process in general, I’d love to hear it! Thanks for reading, and once again, good luck to other applicants!
