Hi guys

Before I write anything, this’s my first time posting after reading you guys for quite a while. I’m really impressed by how you guys help new folks go through the anxiety of applying.

I’m also applying for Fall 2015 and majoring in Mechanical Engr. I have a couple questions…

First, I started a Community College in WA atate in 2012 when I was 16. I’m an international stusent and I only spent 1 year studying high school in my hometown. My current program is to achieve both Associate Degree and High school diploma at the same time. This program seems like a running start for international student. Anyway, I’ll receive my HS diploma no sooner than December 2014. I won’t have a hs diploma by the time I turn in my app, so is my app still legible to be reviewed ?

Since I enrolled in both program at the same time, I’ll have completed more than 90 quarter credits after this fall quarter.

Other than the hs diploma issue, I have a pretty good academic records. My overall gpa is 3.98 and my major gpa is 4.0 . I’ve completed general chem series, Calc 2, 2 out of 3 physics series.

However, i’m pretty nervous about the ECs part. I don’t join any clubs other than PTK (I never attend the meeting). I only did 20 hours of community service at a food bank. I’ve worked in 3 different jobs during my school year: training room cleaner, orientation mentor for new international students, and tutor at the learning center (math, chem, physics, and grammar). I work for 12 hours a week. Would my jobs be a fair excuse for my lack of club activity/community service ? Is my chance really reduced due to that ?

Also, I do not have any ideas to write about the first essay question other than the fact that my dad used to be a mechanical engineering and he worked for the national petroleum company in a pretty high position. I just love natural science and hate social science, that’s why i go for engineering . Any suggestion about this ? I’m really bad regarding thinking idea :(.

Thank you guys so much for reading. Any feedbacks would be really appreciated.

p/s: I love natural science in general but I dont like to involve too much in theory like math and physics. I choose engineerinf since its the combination of both theoretical and practical knowledge. I know I can nail the majority of STEM class at my CC and it feels good. I once tried a Accounting and Economics class. I got As in both of them but I’m totally not an exceptional student like I am in STEM classes. That’s why I don’t study business. If I am asked the true reason why I’m choosing engineering (like the PS question), I’m totally stucked and fail to think of any impressive answer.

Doesn’t it say here that AP units don’t count toward the unit cap? Else, I’d definitely be a high-unit transfer.

Why is having a high # of units considered a bad thing? I mean, if someone took 80+ units and was able to pull off a 4.0 during the first two years of CC, wouldn’t that be considered a somewhat impressive achievement?

@Lemanie‌

Hm, maybe. I don’t know too much about how AP credit works in transfer admissions, sorry. :(

Can anyone give me advice for my situation :(. Posted above

If anyone could help me with a question, I would be so grateful - I am an international student back in my home country after finishing my associate degree at a community college in California. If I apply to UC schools as a transfer for fall 2015, will I qualify as a CC student or just an international student? Thanks!

ECs are low to fair. Doing both HS and CC is time consuming and will be recognized.

Your idea can work. Think of a specific incident that sparked your desire to become an engineer. Tell a story.

However the fact that you are OOS and/or international would be the biggest issues on acceptance.

Can your family afford the 50K+ per year?

@jenny008‌ I believe your qualification depends on your residency/immigrant status. How long were you in CA, how old are you? Best to contact the UCs you are interested in.

Thank you so much for answering! I was in CA for 2 years on a F1-visa (2012-2014. OK, I’ll contact them
Do you know anything about a missing pre-req? I finished all of them for the last app but now they’ve added one class that I can’t take since I’m in my home country again and I can’t go back for one class (a visa wouldn’t allow that) :(

@Jenny008 I believe you are still considered an international student. As for the missing pre-req, can you find it online at any of the CCs in CA? If not, you can explain in the comments section of the application. Check http://www.cvc.edu/</a> and e.g. UCLA extension, etc.

The class I need is LING 1-Introduction to Study of Language but at the CC I used to go to you can take “Introduction to Linguistics” to make up for it. I found it online on the link you provided, do you think that will be ok? It’s not the same school that I attended though.

http://www.cvc.edu/students/schools/monterey-peninsula-college/courses/linguistics-introduction-to/</a></p>

I also don’t know if it is even possible to take a online class from another country, but it doesn’t hurt to ask!

@jenny008 You need to be sure that’s the right class - use Assist.org. Yes it’s possible to take an online class from another country. You must apply first, and then try to register into that class. You might look for it at other schools too. Good luck!

You’ve been so helpful, thank you!!

Just realized another question I have. I was accepted to UCLA but took a gap year working because I couldn’t afford the tuition. Now, when I’m reapplying, should I send the same personal statements or should I aim for completely new ones?

@jenny008‌ I believe you should write slightly new PSs because you have more experiences since you first applied, what, 3 years ago?

No, I applied last year! :stuck_out_tongue: I was accepted but I could no longer pay the whole tuition and decided to save up instead so now I have everything covered + my country now funds student loans abroad which they didn’t do last year (its new for this year).

Then not much has changed. Perhaps ask UCLA admissions counselors for their advice. Good luck!

Hello
Haven’t went through all the pages in this thread yet
New to the site and wanted to ask a question about my chances for admission

A few years ago I was recently on academic probation with a 1.54 GPA ( very bad I know )
But I’ve returned to my local CCC in the summer and very confident in my ability to succeed this time around because of a few circumstance changes
I’m a psych major
I’m in the middle of fixing my cumulative and by the end of the fall my GPA will be at a 3.3
And taking a ton of classes between 2 school for spring
I’ll have all my lower divs and IGETC finished by spring as well
But my school has no honor courses or TAP program

I’ve contacted their admission and told them my story which was going to be incorporated into my PS…they told me they love that kinda story for transfer students ( kinda personal so I don’t wanna discuss the details )
But idk if they said that to give me hope or if I really do have a legit shot
1 professor and my doctor read one of my drafts for the statement n said it was strong
And if everything goes according to plan my cumulative will rise to a 3.7

So just wondering if I do have a shot at UCLA
