TAP is a huge plus.
The prospective freshman are going to find out on the 20th!
@luckie1367ā Just to expand my previous question on transferring from CC+ 4-year.
What if the case were to be that most of the units from my 4-year didnāt even transfer to my current CC?
Would that make a difference in UC adminsā evaluation in my units?
Credit transferability and getting subject credit are two separate things. They count all credits taken to access your standing (fresh, soph, jr, sr). It doesnāt matter if they donāt give you subject credit (if the courses arenāt transferable), they still count in determining your standing at the time of application.
@FlaminBallerā yeah tap is super good lolol i heard like 80-90% (not exactly sure) of people with tap gets accepted
@darren88 , @Bear87 is right
Whatās up, thereās one month left til UCLA transfer decisions are out and it would just calm my mind for someone to chance me so I know where I stand and what to expect. While youāre at it, what are my chances for USC, Berkeley, SD, and Irvine Philosophy?
Major: Philosophy
GPA : 3.46
Major GPA : 4.0 (4 Philosophy classes)
Major Prereqs : Finished all available at my school
IGETC : Done
TAP : Not available at my school
EC : Started a club at my school, a ton of work and leadership, dance, volunteer, etc
Essay : 7/10, not super amazing but still pretty good
I started as a science major so my first few semesters was struggling with classes like Calc (I got a C), Bio (B), etc. Summer 2014 - Winter 2015, Iāve taken 30 units and I received 2 Bās (Chem and Stats) and 7 Aās in Philosophy and GE classes so I have an upward trend since 2013-2014 school year. Iāve read a lot of people saying UCLA Philosophy is easy to transfer to, but I was just wondering where my 3.46 GPA and these stats stood. According to the UCLA Profile of Admitted Transfers, Iām consistently higher than the applying average, but not as high as the accepted average. The 60% admit rate for Philosophy is slightly relieving, but I may just be the 40% that doesnāt get it. Any honest, blunt help is genuinely appreciated! Hahah. If anything, do you have tips to make the next month pass by faster? LOL Thanks!!
Iām pretty sure Iām not gonna get in because of my missing prereqs and IGETC but oh well!
Major: Mathematics of Computation
GPA : 3.75-3.85
Major GPA : 3.65
Major Prereqs : missing Physics series
IGETC : nope
TAP : nope
EC : i interned at Hyundai, volunteered for summer camps, took supplemental academic programs outside of school, did clubs and sports, participated in competitions and won some awards, worked part-time (thereās more high school achievements in this though because iām trying to do a one-year transfer)
Essay : 7/10?
@luckie1367ā
well⦠in that case, I am screwed.
I canāt believe none of my counselors mentioned this to me in the past 1.5 years Iāve spent at the CC.
Thanks, though. : /
Donāt give up yet! You never know until you get the decision!
@darren808 itās only a potential issue if your CSU units are upper-division. If most are lower-division they will be calculated with the CCC units and you can be over 70 and it will just lock at 70, and they will just add on UD after that. Being as your advisor thought you were fine, you probably are. Iām not sure how numbering goes at CSUs but UCs are basically 1-99 lower division, 100-199 upper division, 200+ graduate. By determining the number system at your CSU you can easily count up any UD units. Just add to 70 or whatever lower number youāre at.
@bear87, Iām not sure thatās true. They do work on correcting unit counts before they dump someone as far as I know.
@lindyk8ā Yes, most of my 4-year units are lower division, with few upper divisions.
@Bear87ā I just looked up UCLAās explanation on this matter, and it states that it count transferable units in determining student standing, if I am not misinterpreting.
āTo get an idea of the number of units you may have if you are attending an institution other than a UC campus (all courses are transferable between UC campuses), you should review your coursework and compare it to the courses offered at UCLA. {You will find our course descriptions in the UCLA General Catalog. If your own review indicates that the transferable number of units is within the range required (60-90 semester, 86-129 quarter), you are eligible to apply.}ā
And thank you guys for your invaluable feedback. I appreciate it.
Looking through this thread has been very helpful, so thank you, everyone! Would anyone mind chancing an English major with a 3.6, TAP, and good ECs (presented at an undergrad research conference, internship, published writing)?
Very good, Iād say, @apocalypso. TAP + undergrad research experience is a great combination of positive factors when it comes to admissions. Good luck!
Hey guys have been really worried off late:/ Please helppp!!
Type: International transfer from a UC
Major: CS

for LA all prereqs but some strongly recc. missing

-working for a popular biomedical publication(dev position)
-summer web dev internship in my country
-worked for a startup(not working for anymoreāupdated on mBAāshould I update on UC App too?)
-outreach director for the hackathon at my school
-some projects
Thank you very much!!
Hey everyone! Iām a transfer student from CC and Iām worried about how heavily my second personal statement will be weighed on my application. I know for a fact that my first one is strong as I had several professors and peers look over it, however my second statement was not nearly as strong. I wouldnāt say it was bad, it was just OK, largely because I was writing it on the last few days before submitting it and I didnāt get the chance to get it reviewed as thoroughly as the first. Knowing that UCLA takes them into consideration should I be concerned even with my current stats?
Stats
Major: Pre-Economics
GPA : 4.0
Major GPA : 4.0
Major Prereqs : Completed
IGETC : Completed
TAP : Completed
EC : Served on the Executive Board of the Associated Students, Vice Chair of Finance Committee, Mentor for my high school, treasurer of the economics club
Essay : 9.5/10 on the first essay and 7/10 on the second.
Thank you guys!
Donāt worry about it. Despite the teeth gnashing, personal statements have no real impact unless youāre borderline. I donāt think 4.0 is borderline.
What about me @lindyk8ā

Help appreciated. Do I have chances of making to Cal/LA?
@1494geminiā I rarely give my opinion on chances as itās impossible to know everything about an applicant. I was just mentioning the personal statement, above.
I read your post yesterday and I would say you have a good shot, but, really, how do I know? (BTW, I assume you meant transfer from CC and not UC.)
Anyway, all things being equal, I would say you have a very likely chance, especially with your ECs. I hope that helps.
