Fall 2015 UCLA transfer students

By support system I meant great people to have drinks with and complain about the insanity that is UCLA. Non-trad tailgates are insanely fun!

Cool, if I end up at UCLA I’ll join you for a tailgate. GO Bruins!

Hey @fullload, so which privates? I didn’t know they came out so soon. That’s great news because my cousin is still waiting on USC and I think Pepperdine, which haven’t released yet. Which ones did you get admitted to? Congrats!

Out of state, Lindy. Long story. But I was accepted to both, and both are backups right now.

Ah, well congrats. It’s good to have safety’s already in place. Good luck with both UCI and UCLA!

So the psychology major needs a total of five core courses. According to general catalog, Psychology 130 is Developmental Psychology. If i’m currently taking that in my community college, does that mean I don’t have to take it once I get there? Will my class transfer over and fulfill one of those five core courses? Would I need to still need to take that class there? Just wondering if additional psychology classes (not pre-requisites) that I’ve taken can help me out fulfilling those courses.

I had previously assumed we could NOT do that, which is why I ended up only taking two classes this semester since I was done with everything I had taken. If we can, well that definitely sucks because I could have taken another two Psychology classes.

Is there someway of finding out which courses articulate with courses at UCLA? Because assist only articulates pre-requisites right and not just regular classes right?

I’m asking this here rather than the UCLA section because this is more active. And this is still regarding transfer information.

Nevermind! I think I found my answer?

ā€œ5) Major requirements
All three Psychology Department majors consist of 10 upper division major courses.
None of these requirements have been met with community college coursework.ā€

I’m assuming this is the five core courses, four elective courses, and laboratory. And it says it is not met by CC courses.

@luckyname You need to go to assist.org and plug in your CCC and UCLA and then the major. It will tell you exactly what courses at your CCC fulfill the UCLA requirements for the major. You need to complete all the courses that are required for the major that articulate over.

@LuckyNameā€Œ UCLA courses numbered 100 to 199 are upper division courses. CCs don’t offer upper division courses.

@lindyk8ā€Œ yeah I did that. All those courses were completed. But for example right now I’m taking Developmental Psychology and Child Psychology (which are not on the UCLA assist). I took them because I had nothing else to take. But my original question was if those two classes can replace two of the core courses.

oh, I see. I do not know. If the courses at UCLA are upper division, then no they won’t. You can look on assist and find the articulation agreement with your campus and UCLA. Then you pick a department and there’s a drop-down with the classes. It’s always a pain to find that articulation page (for me, anyway). It will at least show if it articulates over for credit. My instinct says no you won’t be able to use them to fulfill your core.

@LuckyNameā€Œ
The 10 required Psych courses are all upper division, so even if the course names are the same, they can’t be fulfilled with CC courses.

Asking for a friend: Can you complete IGETC requirements in the summer after being accepted? She wants to complete Statistics for the PoliSci requirement. If she got accepted could she still do that, or would they withdraw her application?

I had the same dilemma, but I got into an 8 week class- she didn’t…but she did apply to the UCs.

@zoeyschmoey Speaking from experience, no. When I pushed my Stats class from Winter to Spring, UCLA emailed me right away after I changed it in my TAU. They wanted to know why I changed it. I explained my load was already packed in Winter and I wanted to spread it out. They were ok with it, but they were VERY clear, if it was not completed in Spring it would ā€œadversely affect my chances of being acceptedā€.

They are not messing around with the rule of completing courses by the end of Spring.

[ The good news is I thought it was promising they emailed me that night after changing my TAU, which suggests my application wasn’t tossed in the first round of reviews (I think).]

Do you guys happen to know how many additional units are required for a minor? Or would I be able to get a minor with the 180 required units for my major?

I think I know what the answer is, but will take input from anyone. My daughter applied to UCLA as an intercampus transfer from UCSC as a sociology major. The only requirement she couldn’t meet was their statistics class. She was waitlisted the last 2 quarters and couldn’t get in a class and now she is absolutely beside herself.

She has a 3.86 GPA and has already been accepted to SB and SD, but of course LA is her first choice. It pretty clearly states that a stats class is required, but what can she do if there are no classes on her current campus?? Is she totally screwed?

I don’t know what to tell her and I’m pretty heartbroken myself. Help!

@zeppelinlover Like I mentioned above, they take the Math requirement seriously. If this is in regards to IGETC and the math requirement, no, she has no shot, I guarantee. However if it’s just part of a major requirement and she’s already met her math IGETC requirement, she might still have a shot depending on how many major math reqs are on her list. Make sense?

The math requirement in the IGETC section is vital to getting into UCLA.

@zeppelinlover, I’m not sure how they handle UC-UC transfers, as you don’t do IGETC. It’s an excellent sign that she got into UCSB as they are the strictest of all the UCs re: stats. All you can do is wait and hope. Did she note in TAU that she could not get into the course?

The other good news is that UCLA is the most inter-campus friendly. Good luck to your daughter!

Oh snap, I didn’t notice the ā€œinter transferā€ part of her post. Lindy is correct, my post was regarding a student coming from a CC. My bad.

@luckyname on the quarter system, it’s usually seven, although the number might vary slightly. Two of the courses can be used for both major and minor, meaning if you play your cards right, you only need five additional courses.
