@FUTUREUCLABRUIN1 Don’t worry, no one is burning you at the stake! I appreciate your response. I totally wish I could just switch into my first choice after admission haha, but if that were the case everyone would do that. Good luck on you UCLA admissions!
Coming in with a major you hate, with a plan to switch is a BAD idea. Many classes are restricted to “majors only” and non majors can’t get in. The only way to potentially get into another major is to complete certain coursework, but the only way to get the classes is to be in that major. I’m not saying it’s impossible, but it will take you longer to finish, and you’ll likeky exceed the unit cap. I know a few people at UCLA right now who switched majors or added a double and they have reached the limit, and they can’t take more classes. You can petition to get extra units, but it’s a case by case basis. No guarantees. If you get in with X major, and decide to attend, you need to be genuinely ok with that major, because switching is only a possibility, not guaranteed.
.
See page 12 for change of major limitations for transfers.
UCLA basically doesn’t give you a review for alternative major according to this: http://www.admissions.ucla.edu/faq/TR_Not_Adm.htm
But I know a couple of students who were accepted as an alternative major last year. Both of them were TAP students and their alternative major was not impacted.
So if you’re a TAP student and chose non-impacted major for your alternative, maybe you have a chance to be accepted as alternative major.
@2016Candles Thank you for the information. I didn’t know there was a unit cap.
If I couldn’t switch majors, I was planning on double majoring, but that opens up a whole new list of problems. Here’s to hoping I get into Psychology. Hypothetically, if UCLA were to accept me for Gender Studies, and if they were the only school to accept me, would me going there and getting my Bachelors in Gender Studies effect my grad school plans in Psychology? I’ve heard that your Undergrad degree does not necessarily indicate your grad school outcome. For example, on the UCLA website (need to re-find the source), it said that the most popular undergrad degree for medical school students was actually English.
@Hiroaki0422 Thanks for the link. I think the information on that FAQ is for regular applicants. Only TAP certified students are considered for their alternate major, if they are not admitted into their first choice major. I’m TAP certified so hopefully it helps.
Also, since we’re on the topic of TAP, does anybody know the statistic for acceptance into first choice major vs. alternate choice major? Everyone says the statistics of admission with TAP is anywhere between 74%-98%, but that is the general statistic… It gives no clue whether to if those students got into their first choice major or not.
@sammycatt
Every grad school program is unique, so you’d have to look at schools you’re interested in, to see the specific requirements. Generally speaking for many grad programs you can major in almost anything for undergrad, BUT there are usually specific courses that the grad schools requires. Those courses are typically met if your undergrad degree is related to the grad program.
@2016Candles gave you excellent advice. And if you’re stuck in gender studies it will have no affect on your grad school plans. GS is really just a subset of psych and sociology, but is unfortunately saddled with that unfortunate name that carries a lot of baggage. But it’s a good major and you can work it into your overall plans pretty nicely.
UPDATE. just saw candles update. She’s right.
@2016Candles That is helpful, thank you. I guess Gender Studies will just be my safety net in case no one else accepts me. As long as I’m in school I’ll be happy.
@lindyk8 Thank you for the input. I do agree with your statement. In honesty, I probably would enjoy taking Gender Studies courses, I just never seriously considered it as a major. Regrettably, this is probably due to the stigma associated with it. People hear Gender Studies and automatically think “feminazi ultra liberal who won’t find a job” (I’m not saying this is what I think, but this is the general response). I think if I were planning on stopping at my bachelors it wouldn’t be too great of a major to stick in, but because I do plan on going to grad school, as you said it might be a nice supplement to future studies, as it is more specific than just general psychology.
Guys! I need help! So i applied as mathematic major with 3.75 gpa. The required courses are 3 math classes and one physics class. I got all As in my math classes but i took physics as ps/np and passes it. I know you are not suppose to take major class as ps/np but i didnt know… do you know if ucla just dont accept this kind of applicants or is it just a negative point?
I mean, my gpa isnt too high and plus this, so i know im not going to get accepted but, i want to apply next year again…
Does anybody know how to fix this? Or how to… do anythig about it?
Thanks
.
@kim0707 There isn’t much you can do at this point because decisions are speculated to come out this Friday. I would say just cross your fingers and hope for the best. However, if they happen to not offer you admission, then you can call them and ask why you weren’t accepted. Generally, the admissions office is really nice about this and will tell you the reason (although, they won’t go into detail). If the reason was because you took a major prep as pass/no pass, you can try to appeal. Just ask the professor to write a letter including the ACTUAL grade that you would have gotten. It might help but again, you need to consider the other parts of your application as well. (GPA, PS, IGETC, etc)
You’re allowed to take CCC classes the summer before transfer. If you see a major pre-req for one of the other majors you want, you can try and grab it during summer.
To be eligible for UC admission as a Junior, students must fulfill both of the following:
- Complete 60 semester (90 quarter) units of transferable college credit with a GPA of at least 2.4 (2.8 for nonresidents). No more than 14 semester (21 quarter) units may be taken Pass/Not Pass.
- Complete the following course pattern requirements, earning a grade of C or better in each course:
Two transferable college courses (3 semester or 4-5 quarter units each) in English composition
One transferable college course (3 semester or 4-5 quarter units) in mathematical concepts and quantitative reasoning;
Four transferable college courses (3 semester or 4-5 quarter units each) chosen from at least two of the following subject areas:
the arts and humanities
the social and behavioral sciences
the physical and biological sciences
Each course must be worth at least 3 semeste
…
The idea behind pass-no pass is to allow students to explore areas outside their major without jeopardizing their UC GPA.
When do you guys think we will hear back??
Also any Fine Arts majors hoping to transfer to Ucla on this page? I never see any…

Any other art students out there? If so good luck:)
@collegeartist Didn’t the UCLA arts dept invite students who were approved by the dept to an open house a couple weeks ago? You should look through some threads regarding that. The invite said the arts dept recommended applicant admission to the admissions office. In theory, it was not a guarantee, I suppose, based on general req needing to be fulfilled.
I don’t want to get you stressed, maybe it was a specific subset of the arts dept, although the invite was from UCLA Arts.
Hey man, sorry to bring it up but I’m pretty sure art majors already got the nod a week or two back through an invite to an open house. I could be wrong.
Chance me PLEASE!!!
