My son was accepted to csulb from the waiting list so it was after May 1, and now he is on the housing waiting list. Roommate selection is from 5/18-5/27 and then room selection is the week after that (which he would probably not be able to do if he’s still on the waiting list). Does anyone have any experience with getting in late and still getting their preferences?
Message to @Chunlisaurous - he is somewhere around 100 on the list (when I called they weren’t sure yet because his info was being processed and that’s how many were on the list at the time). It’s frustrating because I know there are people who have decided to go elsewhere that just haven’t cancelled yet.
My D is in the same boat. She was accepted on May 10, immediately committed and put her deposit for housing. Last night she got an email from CSULB that she is wait listed for housing. Called today 5/18. She is number 152 and currently they have 250 Freshman students on the wait list. We were told that they “may” have more information mid June right about orientation dates. Crazy! They did advise us to start looking for off campus housing. I am not comfortable with letting our D live off campus her first year. She is currently holding spots at two other colleges and is guaranteed housing at both. She is heartbroken…CSULB was her second choice school after LMU (their financial package didn’t put a dent with tuition). Holding at CSUF, too. Her friend got an earlier acceptance and applied for housing Feb. She got housing but not her choice dorms. Residential Learning Center?? They told her this is your only option so she took it.
@icmomi Yeah, it’s terrible. The dorm experience is so much of what college is about. I’m pretty stressed about it but my son seems okay that’s the important thing. By the way, did you know that colleges can rescind their offer if you hold multiple spots? I was just reading about someone who was caught. I totally sympathize though, since you may not want to commit to a school that doesn’t guarantee housing, but it is considered pretty unethical to hold the spots. It’s also probably one of the reasons our kids are on the waiting list - other people still holding csulb as their backup. As soon as my son got into csulb, he contacted the other school he had committed to right away - I like to think that someone was very happy to take that spot. Good luck to your daughter!
We are not being unethical…its about timing in our case. She only committed to LMU (cleared waitlist on May 3) on May 9 (their deadline) then heard back from CSULB on May 10. Only got our financial package from both school three days ago. We will be contacting LMU tomorrow to let them know. Right now we are trying to decide about CSUF or plan on living off campus with CSULB. Most places want a signed lease starting June 1 while we may not hear back til mid June or end of July (when students with confirmed housing can get a refund if they are going to a different college). What will you do?
I’m just hoping it works out. One of the people in the housing office I talked to said that she wasn’t allowed to guarantee anything but she thought my son would get in. But even if he does, he will miss the roommate and dorm choosing period so he will be randomly assigned
Your son will get in but we are further down the list and do not live in the area. Besides, the housing person I spoke to advised us to start looking into off campus housing as a back up now. I read of one person clearing the wait list that didn’t hear until just before school started so it was very stressful and he was #2 on the list. Then read of another person who was in the middle of the 400 waitlist getting confirmed at the end of June. My D signed up on FB CSULB Class of 2020 in hopes to find others in the same position. Best to your son!
We’re not from the area either. (We live in Northern Cal). One thing that’s good to remember is that csulb was a back up school for pretty much everyone who applied to the UCs, so anyone who is now getting into those from wait lists will be canceling csulb right about now. I think your daughter will get in too!
She is releasing her spots at LMU and CSUF today. She really loves CSULB. We are so stressed about off campus housing. Definitely not the college experience we wanted for her. Safety is the biggest factor. Hopefully there won’t be any issues at registration. Crossing our fingers!
My D got into Whittier as well. They offered a nice package and loved their spacious dorms but felt the campus was too small. My D has been in small private schools and small charter high school. She wanted a large campus and a larger social pool. My D checked CSULB 2020 FB. Most kids that did get dorms did not get their pick and some are placed in 3 bed dorms when they requested 2 bed dorms. The kids that got into RLC dorms are required to take extra course within RLC outside of their major. I’ve checked apartments close to campus. The nicer ones are $$$ and want commitments by May 31 without furniture. Check CSULB off campus site and didn’t receive any responses back from the two apartments listed with rooms. Hope to hear better news at orientation or meet other students interested in sharing an apartment.
My son felt the same way about Whittier but he did like it a lot. The dorm thing is not ideal, but I’m starting to feel less stressed about it for some reason. I had to get rid of the picture I had in my mind. My son has lived a pretty sheltered life so if he has to deal with some less than ideal housing situation for the first year, maybe it’s a good thing for him He can always get into the dorms next year. 2nd year students don’t get priority but maybe he could appeal based on not getting housing for the 1st year.
Whittier is a beautiful campus and they offer a lot of support to their student. My D also checked our Saint Mary’s of California. Another beautiful campus but when she stepped foot onto CSULB campus, she was sold even more so than LMU. She loved the diversity and excited to make friends from different cultures. Btw, I asked Housing about 2nd year students and dorms for next year. She said sign up will be the same time as incoming Freshman and it is first come, first served. We’ll have a better chance next year. I am feeling a little better about things and feeling like the kids got lucky so far that everything will end up the way it was suppose to be for a reason. My D like your son is not at all worried. Just excited about the journey.
Great news! CSULB Housing has cleared approx 125 wait listed students for dorms. They hope to clear more in the next two weeks. They certainly have been working hard.
Great! My son ended up getting the dorm he wanted (Beachside) and he already he got to pick his roommate so my worry about the waiting list was for nothing I’m really glad so many on the waiting list are now in!
