Fall 2016 Transfer Thread - Cornell University

@catlas2014 Your stats are really nice. However, for credits, I’m not sure if most of your courses can be transferred?? I feel like your freshman writing (NYU writing the essay?) along with calc and intro to sociology class will pass but for other courses like “Global Biocultures”, it’s really up in the air. What major or school are you applying to? And have you fulfilled the transfer requirements that Cornell needs?

If I’m assuming you’re trying for CALS, http://admissions.cals.cornell.edu/apply/transfer/requirements . I would call and make an appointment with an admission counselor if you can.

Thanks for the response @HereToTransferr . I just contacted an admissions counselor so I’ll hear back hopefully soon. You’re right, though, I don’t have the right requirements for CALS so CAS would be better to apply to.

@catlas2014 I think CAS would work out fine and would suit your credits more. Plus, CAS has a film major so most of your credits from NYU tisch can potentially transfer if you applied for that schoo. rather than if you applied to CALS (and you could potentially minor in film studies with a major in bio and it may fulfill some requirements hopefully??)

I’ll be applying to Cornell too! I’m currently a second semester sophomore at a university ranked around #50.

College:
College GPA: 4.0/4.0 over 53 credits
English major and Classics minor
Will need Financial Aid

HS:
Secular Studies GPA: 5.07/4.3 (straight A’s and A+’s in all Honors – school did not offer any AP classes)
Jewish Studies GPA: 3.97/4.3 (shows upward trend every year to where I got straight A’s, but was in Regulars)
I had on average 18 classes a semester in high school due to the dual curriculum.
I only took one AP (English Lit) during high school and received a 4 - I self studied.
I was accepted to my current university through an Early Admissions program, which let me skip 12th grade. So I only went to high school for 3 years.

SAT: 2220 (770 CR, 760 W, 690 M)
ACT: 32 (36 E, 34 CR, 32 M, 27 S)
Did not take SAT Subject Tests ever

College Extracurriculars:
Reporter for School Newspaper, Internship at the Mayor’s Office in a Nearby City, Paid Peer Tutor at the University, On the Committee for Programming at the Hillel on Campus, Member of University’s Grievance Committee, Note-Taker for Office of Disabilities at the University, Coach for a Little League Sports Team on Sundays, Social Director for the Condo I Live in, Founding Member of University’s Classics Table, Founding Member of University’s Fantasy Sports Club

Recommendations: Two professors I’ve taken twice each (one is an English professor and one is a Math professor). I went to their office hours a lot so they know me quite well, and I received A’s and A+'s from them both, so I think the letters will be strong.

I’m hoping!

University: WIT
Cumulative GPA: 3.92
Applying for sophomore standing.

Major: Computer science
Dean’s List

High School
GPA: 4.68
8 AP courses: Calculus AB, BC, US History, Government, Physics I & II, CS A, Microeconomics.

EC’s

  • Computer science research with two professors.
  • Outing Club
  • Church Volunteering
  • TA for three CS courses.
  • President and founder of programming club in HS.
  • Hackathons
  • BAE Internship in HS.

Sent in my application today
Some of my previous stats were wrong/I changed the school I was applying to so:

Applying ILR junior transfer from CC
-50 credits, 16 in progress, 6 more over summer
The catch: have completed all ILR suggested prerequisites except foreign language and economics courses (taking macro and micro over summer, noted in application)
GPA: 3.85
Mid-term: Projected 4.0
PTK NHS
3 excellent LORs from professors in ILR fields
Extracurriculars:
-Intern at partisan political committee
-Research Intern at rising non-profit social science initiative
-Staff writer at a start-up online newspaper based in DC
-College’s environmental conservation club
-Supervisor at part-time job
-Active NHS member

  • other past college work history: worked full time in retail management position during freshman year

Highschool: public
GPA 2.46
SAT: 1570, was originally applying to CALS for government so I sent my score which will certainly only hurt my application…
-Commonapp essay vaguely elaborates on my poor high school performance and the growth I’ve made since
Extracurriculars:
-JV soccer team 9th-11th grade
-Nationally ranked club soccer team 9th-12th grade
-part-time retail job

I guess we’ll see how this turns out. I have a little hope, but my expectations aren’t high. Unfortunately, I think my high school career will screw me, and I’ve been too busy working through college to get a prestigious internship in an ILR related field.

@thenarddog1 I mean, your ECS look really great and your college gpa and etc are really good. I think you have a good shot!

does anyone know who we give the midterm and all the paper reports to? The ones that have to be mailed? I was thinking my advisor, but I’m not sure

@newopportunities I think you can just email them. I was able to email my college report after my advisor signed all the papers.

Did your advisor just fill them out and you scanned them in? @eespos1

@newopportunities yes, she signed and i scanned and sent it to them. i haven’t done the mid-term report yet, but i assume it’s the same process.

Are we required to submit subject tests if we’ve taken them? Thanks

no ^

@bvo112 If sent, do you know if they’ll even be considered?

Hi, I just submitted my app last Friday, when am I suppose to be able to check my application status (or shall I say when will they email my app confirmation)?

Also, will NOT taking the SAT hurt you a lot or just slightly? Thanks!!

Hey guys. I was wondering if anyone knows if Cornell (or other schools) keep records from students that previously applied and were rejected. I applied to Cornell Arts and Sciences my senior year of HS and was rejected. I now go to a top 25 school and want to transfer for Fall 2017 to CALS for biometry and statistics(I am a current freshman, so I would transfer after sophomore year) I was wondering if anyone knows if Cornell keeps records of why I was rejected, etc and if I even have a chance at CALS because of this. I have good stats (4.0 unweighted HS GPA all honors and 10 APs as well as valedictorian/ 3.933 GPA after first freshmen semester). Thank you in advance for any information!!

Hey guys! Here are some of my stats:

NJ CC transfer
Current Major: Business Administration
Applying to: ILR

STATS
HS GPA: 2.9: went to top tech school in state but did not apply myself
CC GPA: 63 credits with overall gpa of 3.85, 4.0 business core
Have completed all ILR prereqs except Calc which I’m currently taking

ECs
President of business honors society
President of entrepreneurship club
Member of award winning PTK chapter
Campus Scholarship Representative/ Speaker
Speaker at Galas for CC
Two internships, one at top company in NY
Accounting tutor
Founded non-profit org

Other:
First generation college student
Born outside of the USA

I am also new to all of this!! Here are my stats:

Major: Biochemistry

Current College:

Ozarks Technical Community College in Springfield, MO
GPA: 3.85
I was in the Chancellor’s list 3 times in a row
Extras: I am in the Honors Program & in Phi Theta Kappa

High School:

Willard High in Willard, MO
GPA: 3.75
I graduated with an honors diploma
EC: NHS, FBLA (Secretary), DECA, Science Club, Foreign Language Club
I won a couple of rewards and made it to state twice with FBLA and I won a couple of diplomas in French from MSSU at a competition with our foreign language club

Others: First Generation college student and an immigrant. I am bilingual (English & Spanish) and I do know quite a bit of French.

Now, I do have a story although I don’t know if it is an advantage.

I had to take 2 years off after high school due to my immigrant status. For an entire year I waited until I got my work permit due to the Dreamer’s Act. So I worked until the government finally gave me (after 3 tries) my residency green card. So I was out of school for 2 years. I have been working full time ever since and I did attend college as a full time student while working a full time job. During this last semester, I worked 1 full time job as well as a part-time job while attending college.

Because of all of this, I haven’t had the opportunity or resources to do many extracurricular activities. However, I do feel my essays are good because I made them personal and I explained why I want to transfer. I think my letter of recommendations were great, I am really good friends with my teacher and she said she had my back!

I am so nervous but so excited because I finally have the chance to at least TRY to go to university. I attended my current college because I had no resources for ANYTHING else, so this is already a dream come true!!!

Any thoughts on my stats?

Good luck to everyone! I wish we could all get in :S

@blackwidow22 I’m no authority in judging cornell-appropriate stats, but I’m impressed. I’d intuitively say your chances are good.

Does anyone know if it is worthwhile to attend any of the visiting sessions/visiting a class etc?
