@incogneato @goldencub I didn’t even think about that! That’s a great idea; I’ll definitely do that, especially because it can apply to other UCs as well. I always forget about the additional comments section to be honest.
Hey guys, do you think I have a good chance as a Psych major?

I reallyyy wanna get into UCLA, what else can I do? this is my 3rd time applying to ucla
@hellwasfun yes
Hey guys! First of all, good luck to all of those who are applying. I have a question regarding the Additional Comment section of the application. Should I use all 550 words? What kind of information should I input in this section? Really how important is it to those evaluating applications? Personally I was thinking about addressing my struggles after my first few semesters at school. I explain to them the reason I started off slow and how I transformed myself and my grades. What do you guys think? Thanks.
Hi everyone! I’m so nervous about applying, I don’t know how I’m going to wait until April!!! Lol
What do you guys think my chances are at getting in with the Pre-psychology major?
Major: Psychology
UC GPA: 3.91 as of right now, 3.93 by end of fall and 3.95 by end of spring.
Major GPA: 4.0
Pre-Reqs: complete by the end of fall.
IGETC: will be complete by end of spring (missing 2 classes right now)
ECs:
- a volunteer counselor at an online teen help-line.
- member of Alpha Gamma Sigma
- member of my ccc’s psychology club
- received deans honor 4 semesters (if that even means anything)
- working 28 hours a week for the past 3 years.
TAP: no
Personal statements: id say pretty good, I talk about overcoming very difficult circumstances.
Other Circumstances:
- I’m the first person to go to college from my family.
- came to America as a refugee when I was 7.
- I come from a single parent home with low income which means I’ve been working since I was 16.
- overcame severe depression
Worried about:
- took me 5 years to finish all the classes necessary because of having to work. Should I mention this in additional comments or do they not take how long it took you into consideration?
- Not being TAP certified
Please give me your HONEST opinions.
Also, good luck to everyone!
@Panorama14 no, the additional comments are not there to add another essay. Simply state any issue you think might need explaining. Many people leave it blank. Figure just a few sentences to a couple paragraphs if you wish to discuss your steady improvement.
@UCLAhopeful922 I think you stand an excellent shot.
Thank you @lindyk8! I hope so :-S
@UCLAhopeful922 I know it’s very stressful and you will go over every possible thing that you may inadvertently have messed up, but as long as your units line up, I really don’t see a problem.
@lindyk8 lol that’s exactly what I’ve been telling myself. I just know it’s a VERY competitive major if it wasn’t I’d be a lot less anxious. I’ll just have to find a new hobby until April
@uclahopeful922 Actually, I dont think it will be that bad until around April. And don’t let people psyche you out. It’s easy for that to happen up here.
@lindyk8 you’re right. The last days will be probably be the hardest.
And thanks for that advice!
Hey guys, I have just submitted my application. Please chance me I’m really nervous!!!
Major: Psych, second choice Political Science (For Berkeley)
Current School: Top Liberal Arts
GPA: 3.84 (with 18 credits in progress soon to be factored in)
EC: Seeing eye dog trainer, slam poet, modeling, diving, and various other clubs.
Hooks: Fluent in Mandarin (Studied abroad in Shanghai, and interned in Shenzhen/Hong Kong for a summer)
Half European Half Chinese/partly Mongol.
Essays: I believed to be very good, one addressing my overcoming of severe OCD and the other regarding my love for cliff diving in Hawaii (where I live, however, California-born).
Pre-reqs: Will be completed by time of transfer.
TAP: No
Recommendations: Got a recommendation from the head of the gerontology department from my university, should be all nice things said about me haha. I knew her pretty well.
Applying to: UCLA, UC Berkeley, USC, Pepperdine, Chapman
@sxsxjx You have a lot of varied interests. Gerontology, huh? So I know USC has a big gerontology dept.
Hey guys! Would anyone care to chance me? Thanks!!
I’m a one year transfer that only has 12 quarter units out of the required 90 from the summer quarter (29 after the fall quarter ends). However, I expect to have completed 90-94 units by the end of spring quarter (28 are from AP tests).
Major: Pre-psychology! I know super competitive!!
GPA: 4.0 including the fall quarter which is ending soon
EC: All my ECs are from high school. How much will my lack of recent ECs affect my chances? Will they understand that I just graduated high school, so I don’t have anything new? Also, my job takes place right after my classes because I’m a teacher at a after school center, so I can’t join any clubs due to schedule conflicts. Will this be a good enough reason to why I’m not in any clubs at the moment if I put it in the additional comments section?
- varsity sport
-unpaid college statistics tutor (this is new!)
-Leo club member
-Red Cross club member - competitive dance for 10+ years
Awards:
-2012 Grand Concours 9th place winner (national French test)
-2013 Grand Concours 9th place winner (yup same ranking again!)
-AP scholar (should I even include this? everyone is a ap scholar so…)
-Dean’s list (from summer quarter. should I include this since its just one quarter?)
Community Service:
-decent amount from high school
Pre-req completion: All should be done by end of spring quarter but with assistance from AP tests
IGETC: should be done by spring
Essays: Haven’t even started yet haha but should be around 8/10
TAP: No
It seems like I’m on the right track, but I just feel like I’m not a stand out applicant due to my lack of classes taken and my lack of ECs. What do you guys think?
Does anyone know when will UCLA release the Transfer Profile for Fall 2015? Is it before Nov 30?
Last year the Transfer Profile was released on 11-26-14, the day before Thanksgiving.
@Happy2Help Thank you, it should be almost out then.
Does anyone know if UC’s actually calculate your GPA for major prep on assist? My overall GPA is 3.36 but my major prep is 3.9 so I hope they take both into consideration
Only UCLA calculates major GPA across the entire campus. A few other highly-selective majors may at other UCs, depending on their policy. The app does not calculate it, at least not for you to see. If calculated, it is done later. I’m not exactly sure how.
