Should I go to UCSD and double major in Ethnic Studies or UCLA and double major in Chicana/o Studies?
Orientation is a waste of time. I absolutely hated that it took away the entire day. They make you come to campus around 8 AM, then they make you do a bunch of silly things, i.e. you become Bruinized, then you go to an unnecessary review of what not to do, i.e. leave your computer and money unattended, always lock out of your computer, calling 911, teaching you the 8-Clap(I mean, seriously people). This experience should’ve been called Duh!
Around noon I befriended a couple history majors. We got away from our group and went and grabbed a couple beers at Wolfgang’s at Ackerman. We talked about how foolish this entire experience was. We caught up with our group a little later where your student adviser shows you what courses you need to graduate. For us history majors, they then took us to Bunche where we met Paul Padilla, I believe he is the head history counselor. For history majors, prepare to get dozens of e-mails from him weekly. He tells you what you can do with a history major this and that. I swear, it felt like we were children and they were holding our hands. For the most part, I could understand if this was for freshmen, but for transfers, it was unnecessary.
By 5 or 6 when everybody is drained you go to your student advisers dorm where you register for your classes. After you register, they take you on the bus and drop you off and your day is done.
If the orientation was from 8-2. It would’ve been perfect but finding out that it was until 7, the entire mood changed from the students. We all mummbered and your student adviser totally understands, they went through it as well.
Just some tips.
Be as comfortable as possible. Wear light clothes and walking shoes. You will be walking a lot. Remember, this will be during the height of summer, so the its going to be hot as hell.
Drink a lot of water.
Bring a backpack. Theyre going to give you some goodies.
Bring a laptop if you have one. You will be registring for your courses . Or you could do it with your smart-phone. If neither of those are options, you can always ask a fellow student if you can use theirs to register.
You don’t need to bring a lunch. I believe they will give you 10 dollars credit on your BruinCard for you to use for lunch.
Best of luck landies and gents.
@Tik1127 do we HAVE to go to orientation? are there different options for dates that we can choose? I might be on the east coast until right before move in day…

I do not believe you have to go but I believe your registration will be late. Those that do orientation early get to pick and choose their classes. I did a late orientation, I believe second to last and I got stuck with crappy classes.
@Tik1127 I have to say my daughter same year as you, felt like it was a long day but she didn’t know anyone and wasn’t as outgoing as you. I agree with all your tips and yes they provide lunch $.
Also I think if you upload your photos you can pick up your BruinCard at orientation?
ETA I stand corrected. My daughter had a blast. [See 2016 thread.](FALL 2016 UCLA OFFICIAL TRANSFER THREAD - #3182 by Happy2Help - UC Transfers - College Confidential Forums)
@Tik1127 Thanks for the info. I looked up the options for dates and I think I can do one of the earlier ones before I leave !
Yes, you have to upload a picture to them and they’ll make your BruinCard. You’ll wait in line when you get there. I believe it was between Powell and Royce. I never uploaded mine, so that day I had to take my picture, which BTW, I was wearing a hat that day and I had to take off and was having a bad hair day.
I am glad your daughter had a good time. For the most part, the benefits that came out of this was the people I befriended, we became good school mates. The day just wipes you out. Much of what they told us was basic information. If I had to do it again, I probably would but I wish somebody would’ve told me it was an all-day event and I would’ve done a earlier orientation so I could’ve had better courses in my first quarter.
@Tik1127 is pretty spot on on orientation. It is a long day and pretty pointless overall. I had an early orientation and I thought it was worth it for the early class registration. It was barely worth it though. I wish I could have gone in at 7pm and just did the last ten minutes.
I did meet some cool people in my major that I still communicate with, so that was a positive.
Waitlisted
Actually not too upset about it because my CC counselors pretty much said that there was no chance that I could get in, but I guess my personal statements were good enough to warrant consideration.
Best believe I’m gonna write a wonderful LOCI. Anyone else planning on using the full 7,000 characters? I’ve heard that those who show that they put a lot of effort into the essay and demonstrate their desire to go to UCLA are given a decent chance.
If you have a lot of anxiety like me, I would recommend orientation (lol). It was nice to meet other English majors and ask questions/sign up for classes I was intent on enrolling in ASAP.
I agree that orientation shouldn’t be so long – It’d have been a better experience if it was half a day, tops – but you are given some nice meals!
But yes, as Tik said, bring walking shoes! I saw some students last year in heels and omg, the horror.
@Oldhopeful – I had the same experience! Winter was really when I started to feel most comfortable with the quarter system. The fall quarter was ROUGH for me. I don’t think I went outside, like, ever. But I got a really great GPA so it was worth it. I have to say, though, I really don’t meet any other older students such as myself in class – everyone is 21 or so ¯_(ツ)_/¯
@Edirol Yea, I’d say most people I meet are around that 20-21 range. I have had classes where there’s people older than me though. It’s a little odd, I don’t think I’ve had anyone around my age. It’s always been over ten years older or younger.
Walking shoes is essential for that day. And yes, I noticed plenty of girls dressed up like they were about to hit up the clubs that day.
@Tik1127 – Ha! I actually saw and helped a girl whose feet were bleeding because she walked from royce quad to the young research library in heels.
@VivianChy I would strongly encourage him to send in appeals to the schools where he has been rejected. Being rejected with 4.00 is not uncommon-- many people at my CC were rejected last year. However, those who appealed (even with 3.78) managed to get into UCLA pre-econ. Most of the appeal/waitlist cases I heard were successful. However, the appeal/waitlist essay needs to be really polished to ensure a good chance. If nothing comes out of this, maybe do another year?
@james97209 Pretty high I think, if you get good grades and send in a good essay. My friend was waitlisted with a 4.0 and got in last year. Other students who were rejected with 3.8 managed to appeal into the school too.
Yaay I got in!!
