Can someone please chance me for first year transfer from UCR Bioengineering?
Major: Biophysics
UC GPA: 4.0
Major GPA: 4.0
IGETC: N/A
Major Prep: Finished by Spring 2017
TAP: N/A
EC’s:
Don’t have much except joining BMES and SD Hacks, so I’ll list my high school ones.
-USC Mechanical Engineering Internship over summer
-Volunteer tutor at library
-President of FBLA, also won 8th Place Computer Applications at State Level competition and 5th Place Computer Applications at Section Level competition
-Vice-Captain of Vex Robotics Team
Also applied to UCSD, UCI, UCB. Wanted to apply for Bioengineering, but I wouldn’t be able to meet the OChem pre-reqs by Spring 2017.
CCC In-State Transfer
Major: Political Science
GPA: 3.81, I got a C in Stats, my only class that I did not get an A.
Major GPA: 3.5 (My Major GPA is so low due to Stats)
TAG: UCI
IGETC: Finishing up this spring
Major Prereqs: All completed
ECs: Student Ambassador
Member of the Honors Club
Member of the Multicultural Club
I did a political Internship for the campaign of CA State Senator Tony Mendoza
Letter of Recommendation from CA State Senator Tony Mendoza
Volunteering at a convalescent home (That doesn’t really apply to my major)
I also put one EC from High School: Model United Nations (I put it since it integrates with the International Relations branch of Political Science)
Essays: They’re stellar! I put so much time and effort in them. I made so many drafts and got them reviewed by several counselors, professors, and family members. I also got my essays read by a UCI admissions officer. 9.5 or 9/10
I’m worried due to my major GPA, but I feel that my extracurriculars and most importantly my essays are my strong points.
Chance me please.
Guys, I were taking Multivariable Calculus/Linear Algebra/Differential Equations this fall semester (I thought I can handle it, but it was extremely hard), and I end up with all Bs, and my gpa is 3.7 down from 4.0 (major gpa goes really low around 3.5 i think), and I am applying for Statistics for UCLA, am I still get the chance? Thanks for help !!!
@quanaucb You have a good chance. Everyone in adcom knows that the courses you’ve taken are hard (they are weeder courses!). But Stats is a competitive major though… But I’d say you are a strong competitive applicant.
@quanaucb Did you take a single course that gave credit for both Linear Algebra and DiffEq or did you take them as separate courses? Assist says DiffEq isn’t even one of the prerequisites for statistics so that might score a few points. It’s not the best situation you’re in but your numbers are still in range so good luck
Is anyone else having pre-transfer anxiety??? I’m reading people say that they’re afraid that they won’t get in because of their “low” GPA. I’ve never had a GPA like you guys! I’m extremely impressed at all all of your GPA’s and EC’s! I’m transferring with a 3.4 (best case scenario) and I have NO ECs no internships…nothing. I’m hoping my creative writing samples will be good enough but I’m terrified… anyone else?
I think we all have some form of “pre-transfer” anxiety, myself included. I think about admissions every day since I submitted my app in November. That being said, @MiniGrace11 no matter if your GPA is deemed “low” by some, I contend that you have a chance to get in. We are all in this together, and all of us whether high or low gpa–have a chance to either get in or get denied. Also, keep in mind that a GPA doesn’t define who you are, rather its only a small piece of the puzzle.
@mightyMETA yeah, I feel you on that. I’m absolutely terrified that I’m going to seem like an idiot compared to people that have been there since freshman year Having social anxiety in a major that requires me to be social and going to a school with a huge social life is also intimidating. I don’t make friends easily because I can initiate conversations (which probably also makes me look less intelligent than I am.) What’s your major?
@Ciceroo yeah, I’ve been on UCLA’s website every day since I applied. Although it’s true that our GPA’s don’t define us as people, the way the education system is set up makes you question if the school knows that. does anyone know when admissions letters are sent out? or if they come via e-mail or in the mailbox?
@MiniGrace11 Admissions will perhaps be on April 21, which is a Friday. Don’t quote me on this, but I know for Berkeley they said they will release admissions April 28 so I would assume UCLA would be relatively before them. Nonetheless, best of luck for Spring 2017 semester. I also read your response to Mighty about social anxiety, if you ever need advice feel free to pm me. I’ll gladly be of service!
Reading through these forums there are a lot of people with great ECs and other people like me with little ECs to show for besides work…starting to wonder if I made a huge mistake by not getting involved more at my CC as someone who is applying to an impacted major…whoops…
@MiniGrace11 I’m sorry to hear you have social anxiety. Why pick a major that requires that much social interaction?
I’m a math student myself, how about you? I think an important thing to realize is that everyone suffers from some form of anxiety, regardless of their GPA or the college they attend. The only way to transcend that anxiety is to focus on what you love
@rainbubble Sociology’s an impacted major? It says 38% of the students got admitted for sociology last year; how do they define impacted? I’ve seen lots of kids on these forums get in with minimal ECs though BTW, I think the UC system realizes that many CC students have family and work related responsibilities that take up a lot of their time.
@mightyMETA I chose film and television because I love it too much to let anything stop me from going for it. Even if I seem awkward, I’m doing what I love to do
@mightyMETA It is considered impacted, but not going to lie looking at the acceptance rate I was a little confused myself lol. I’m not sure how they qualify it either. But thanks, that’s comforting to hear. I see so many people with stellar ECs on this website that it’s hard to not feel a little intimidated! #:-S
On a random note, I had a stress dream the other night. I had been accepted, but I got a phone call that UCLA had never received my transcripts so they rescinded my admission without telling me. Awful. Now that it’s officially 2017 I have a feeling the decisions anxiety is only going to get worse…hang in there everyone…and happy new year !
