FALL 2017 UCLA OFFICIAL TRANSFER THREAD

The school is way smaller than I have thought lol. But its good tho, im a little bit less nervous now.

I applied for housing. Does any one know what comes next?

I haven’t submitted my SIR cuz I’m still waiting to hear back from USC :frowning:

Sup guys! Went to the Bruins Day today and I definitely felt that UCLA is where I would fit in and enjoy. So I submitted my SIR today!!! GO BRUINS WOO HOOO!!!

Now, I gotta get B’s in my classes which is gonna be slightly tough since I slacked off, but I will do it for UCLA!!!

I’m lonely because no one ever posts in the Cal thread ;(

Waitlisted with approximately a 3.4 GPA, Architecture major. I took 14 architecture classes at my local community college, IGETC completed, attended UCLA’s Jumpstart Architecture program last summer and took an architectural history course at the same time at UCLA, enrolling me in a total of 11 units. Hopefully I’ve got a chance ! UCLA is my top choice !

Not sure why it would make a difference how big or small UCLA is because most of the classes depending on your major will be in a few buildings.

For me(History), it was predominately in.

Bunche
Haines
Humanities
Public Affairs

Other than that, once I had it at Broad. Once in Royce and once in Dodd. That’s about it. For the couple years I attended at UCLA I didn’t even know what South Campus looked like till the last couple of weeks when I did my goodbye to the school. Hell, there are some places I still haven’t seen on campus.

And most of that time, you’re going to be cooped up in the library, which brings me to another point. Do not EVER study at Powell. As beautiful as it is, it seems like you’re in Hitler’s Bunker. There is no air flow and it gets really funky in there. During midterms and finals, people sleep there, and even take air-matresses and snore their heads off. I had to wake one dude up because he was snoring so loud, I couldn’t focus. If you want to go to one of the libraries, go to YRL. You can either study downstairs in a pod or reserve a room where you can openly and freely talk without disrupting your fellow students, or just go up to the 3-5 floors where you can have peace and quiet. Plus, there is a coffee shop inside YRL where you can study with your classmates and freely talk.

Good luck, and I am telling you when it is all said and done, and you’ve graduated in a couple years time, you’re going to miss the times where you had midterms and finals at UCLA. There was something special about studying at UCLA, it’s got this strange aura that made you enjoy doing your work and pushing yourself beyond your limits.

I concur re: YRL. My go-to study spot. The coffee there is pretty decent! The English Reading Room is great for studying as well (I think it’s open to all majors? I’m not sure. But you can hear a pin drop in there).

Hey guys!
So happy to be a part of UCLA as a transfer student this Fall 2017. I’m so nervous because I’m going after what my heart is telling me (after being so indecisive in choosing my university), and taking the plunge to UCLA. I’m an incoming Transfer student from community college, 3.9 GPA, going to UCLA under a Pre-sociology major, and so if anyone would like to meet-up and shiz to unite together with the same major and wanna be friends, feel free to message me or @ me. I want to meet new people and get out of my shell, since I honestly do not know anyone at UCLA. Going to Bruin Day was exciting because I got to see the campus but man I guess I have to get used to my legs feeling like jelly. I felt like I did a marathon along with Usain Bolt or something just by walking/running around everywhere seeing different buildings and going around trying to grasp so much info all at once. I mostly talked to financial aid that I didn’t really get a chance to explore all of the campus. The money is really important to me since I don’t have much, but I want to do what I can to pursue my childhood dreams. I still have a couple questions lingering in my confused head that I’d hope if someone can answer:

1.) When will we get our Bruinbill or Bruin card, and a bus pass? What exactly is it used for paying what exact things? Where do you pay Bruin bill? In what forms is it payable?

2.) Is housing randomized? Will they look at my preferences? Will there still be housing spots left available if I sign up now? I know deadline is June 1. I’m thinking of getting Deluxe Residence Hall. Can someone explain what DeNeve, Gardenia Way & Holly Ridge, Sproul Cove & Landing is like? Which one seems better? Is it co-ed , or males on one floor and females on another floor? How is laundry, showering, toilets, and all? Does everyone go whenever to the bathroom and shower at any time or is there set times ?

3.) Can someone pls explain the various meal plans and how it works? So if I choose the cheapest 11 meal plan, do I get to do 11 swipes from a card per week? What card do we use? How do we pay for food in UCLA if dorming? Can you only swipe with the meal plan card for the dorm dining areas, not the campus? PLSS Im confused

4.) I just SIR’d today since I’m nervous as heck to make the plunge…but I did it!, and so what deadlines should I keep srsly in mind right now?

5.)When is the incoming transfer orientation dates and is it mandatory? How much does it cost? Are we staying in campus for one day or is an overnight thing?

6.) As a community college transfer student, do we have to send just our community college transcripts? OR do we send our IGETC along with it? My provisional checklist just says send in transcripts up till Fall semester 2016 and the deadline is June 1. Confused if I should send high school transcripts?

7.) As far as the ASHE immunization, what does this mean, “In addition, newly admitted incoming students at high risk for tuberculosis must provide documentation that they have been screened for tuberculosis within 6 months of entry to UCLA.” Do we have to have had a TB testing done 6 months before Fall 2017 quarter? or??? How does that go? Is there a fee? Is all of it online? I looked at the site, and I just want to make sure. Is the deadline ANYTIME before September 25 2017?

8.) Is a parking permit for the quarter or 2017-2018 year? Is it hard to get??? How much does it cost? Where can you park? Do you have a designated parking space for you in the lots? Essentially explain parking pls!

9.) If anyone wants to meet up or something that’d be cool. I don’t know anyone at UCLA …feeling so lost…but excited because I have always wanted to go here ever since I was little. So a mix of happy and nervous.
-I like trying new foods (if anyone knows cool places to eat on campus and out of campus that’d be cool?( Inexpensive as well)
-Love going to the beach
-Trying to read new interesting books, any book recomm.?
-Interested in marches and fighting for a common cause

10.) Sorry if this is long, if you read this all the way, thank you. Goodluck with everythang in your journey! Hopefully A’s all the way for you!!! Woohooooooo

Do people get priority housing by signing up prior to the June 1st due date? I was under the impression that once that due date comes then they begin to put the housing assignments together. So does that mean people who hve already SIR’d and applied for housing have an advantage?

@filipinafoodie96

I could tell you are anxious and seem a bit nervous and that is understandable. Everything will be fine.

1- Bruin Card, you will get your Bruin Card on orientation. I believe you’ll get an e-mail saying take a picture and e-mail it. If not, you can just take your picture on orientation. The bus pass, I believe you can just use your Bruin Card for the Bruin Blue Bus(or whatever it is called, I never used it)

2/3/-I didn’t live on campus, I cannot help you there.
4-There really isn’t any other deadline you should worry about, as long as you sent in your final transcripts, IGETC by the time they asked, you’re fine.

5-Orientation is highly recommended, the sooner you do it the better. This is where you’ll register four your courses. I do not recall how much it was, but I believe it was somewhere between 150(Don’t quote me because I don’t even recall how much I paid but I know it was over a 100 dollars though). If you don’t do an orientation, you’ll likely have to wait for you to register for your classes and that means, you’ll get the bottom of the barrel. I believe the dates will be released June 12th or something like that.

6- Yes, you send in your CC transcripts WITH your IGETC certification. If you want to play it safe, do CERTIFIED MAIL. Meaning, somebody will sign that your transcripted were delivered. No, you do not need to send in your HS transcripts.

7-LOL, no you do not need to do a test for TB. It just says people that are at high risk. Disregard that.

8- Parking… Parking is absotutely terrible at UCLA. You have to pay for it every quarter, and it is about 250 a quarter. You need to apply and hope you will get it. More and more students are getting denied parking since faculty, staff, carpool and graduate students get prioritized. The 6-7 quarters I was there, I was denied for parking three times, but two times, I was fortunate enough to win an appeal and be called in for a late parking pass. If you do not get parking, this is what you’ll have to do. Get to school around 8 AM, and pay 12 dollars for the day for parking. Because, if you wait by 10 or so, all the “pay to park” spots will be taken. Then, your next option will have to be parking at Westwood Village and finding parking there is a nightmare. As I stated this before in this thread, sometimes, it is impossible to find parking, and students will just go home because they couldn’t find parking and they missed class. There are other spots at UCLA you can pay to park, which is about 20 dollars a day and again there is no assurance you will get a spot there as well.

Still trying to find roommates, l’d rather find them myself than UCLA’s random selection. I just turned 20 this year! Whoop whoop! I like reading, eating, politics, animals, volunteering, long, deep conversations about whatever, but I also like to party sometimes and definitely love binge-watching Netflix and movies. I’m going to be studying anthropology as well as completing the pre-reqs for med school. If you’re interested in being roommates or even just being friends, I’m always down to meet new people, just hit me up on instagram: dllynnnnn

@Tik1127 Thank you so much for answering most of my questions. Nervous as heck! I actually sent my community college transcripts only through online in my comm. college portal? Is it ok if I send IGETC separately or??? :frowning:

@uclahopeful2017
I too am still confused on the housing entirely! Confused transfer here >.< eeeep. All I know is the deadline is June 1? I too was under that assumption! However, I still have no clue. I just finished my application for housing today mainly because there’s a lot of people, and all I keep hearing of is doing it as early as you can??? Ahhhh. Can anyone tell me when they recieved their housing offers or ??? When exactly is that??? What happens now??? Im so confused.

@LynAmmo are you interested in a triple or double? Im also a little nervous about UCLA’s random selection and you seem pretty dope! I just want to make sure before we get to know each other that were applying for the same dorms!

@UCSBorUCLA I listed the Deluxe Triple as my first choice. I would’ve picked the cheapest (Classic), but I can’t do without AC in the summer haha. Which did you pick?

I think im going to do the classic ): I went on a dorm tour yesterday and the deluxe triples were so crowed and the common area wasn’t as nice. I didnt know the classics do not come with AC…wtf lol

Okay so people talking about housing… I went to bruin day and the housing tour guide was saying that for transfers the only thing available will be triple because of too many students. Also a lot of the tour guides that live in the classics say it’s not as bad as everyone says they are.

@pantafootball2 I hope that’s true because the triple is my first choice =D>

Question about Statement of Intent to Register … is there any downside to submitting your Statement of Intent to Register / Housing, etc., other than losing deposit monies? if you end up not following through with actually attending in the Fall?
