Fall 2018 admissions

Please clarify! Daughter got rejected for UC Berkley, UCI, waitlisted to UCLA (UCI being her satefy).

GPA 4.38
SATs 1350
Activities: Peer Mediation, Link Crew club, Marching Band (4years) Varsity Cheer (4years)
Community Service- 100 + hours
AP- 4 completed witj 3/4’s and 3 more pending.

Only thing is that she was taking her language fullfillment last fall at a CC to fulfill college requirements. Received an A. But that grade did not reflect on her application as she was still awaiting transcript. Could the fact that she had not fullfilled that grade at the time of applications be a reason she was rejected to all her applications? Although letters did not indicate her lack of requirements, yet was flat put rejected? Dont’ know what to advise her to do next?!

@Mamajbear

Its clear that the SAT score (1350) was the reason she was rejected (I’m surprised she even got WL at UCLA). 1350 is a very low SAT score, and there were kids with 1550’s getting rejected and waitlisted at schools like Berkeley and UCLA.

Her extracurriculars were decent, but they were nowhere good enough to make up for her poor SAT score and un-rigorous class schedule.

Waitlisted, Undeclared
In state, not local
CSU GPA: 3.9
SAT: 1260

I won’t be accepting a spot on the waitlist but best of luck to anyone who is hoping to attend!

Accepted: UCSB, UCR, CSUF, CSULA
Waitlisted: UCI, CSULB
Rejected: UCLA
Waiting: CPP

@Mamajbear: Were these 3 UC’s the only schools she applied? Did she get accepted anywhere? I agree it could have been her SAT since it is within range but on the lower side for top schools like UCB/UCLA. Also which major did she apply, since the major can make a significant difference.

If she has not viable options, either a Gap year and reapply to a wider range of schools where her stats put in the 75th percentile or consider community college and transfer in 2 years. There are different paths for her to take to get her goal so best of luck to her.

@RMNiMiTz I had a good gpa, LOW sat score, and BARELY ANY EC, and I got into UCLA, UCSD, UCD, UCI, UCSB, UCSC, and UCR, and WL at Berkeley.

Each applicants life is shaped differently. You may think a 1350 is a low score, but for some schools (like mine), consider it a good score.

I had super great essays too.

@orionary

Well you have never posted any of your stats (from what I can see in your history), so what can I say?

I am also waitlisted and I still have not received an that they said they would send me. Have you gotten yours yet?

When replying to the waitlist is it best to just answer the questions or do you say more?

Does anyone know if students are required to live on campus their first year? I’m considering living off campus but I want to know if I can.

@kbutter1234 Long Beach wants you to live on campus 1st year or you are supposed to live at home with parent(s)

@kbutter1234: First-time freshmen are required (as space is available) to live in University Housing during their first year at CSULB.

You are NOT required to live in University Housing if you:

Are 21 years or older as of August 18, 2018
Are enrolled in 5 or fewer units (checks of your enrollment will be done throughout the semester.)
Exemption Policy

Exemptions from the requirement will be considered based upon the criteria listed below. Students must be admitted to the University, and apply for Housing, before they can submit an exemption request. All requests must be submitted online through the application portal. Appropriate supporting documentation which demonstrates the authenticity of the circumstances for which a student is requesting an exemption, can be uploaded along with the Exemption Form. Students who are under the age of 18 when appealing must also submit a letter from a parent or guardian indicating the latter’s awareness of and consent to the appeal to live off-campus. The Exemption Form will be available on our application portal on March 5, 2018.

Submitting an Exemption Form on the application Portal:

  1. Apply for fall housing.
  2. Verify your personal details.
  3. Select "I want to do an Exemption Request” within the housing portal.
  4. Complete the Exemption Form and provide proper supporting documentation.
  5. Upload Exemption Form and supporting documents to the application portal or mail to the CSULB Housing Office.
  6. An exemption status email will be emailed to you once your request is reviewed.

Reasons for Exemptions

Living at Home - Students who choose to live at home with the parent(s) or legal guardian(s) and commute to the university during the entirety of their freshman year. Students who wish to live at home with parent(s) or legal guardian(s) are allowed to do so, as long as they live within a 25 mile radius of campus and submit the Exemption Request by selecting the “Living at Home” option.
Current active military or veteran’s status – Student must verify by submitting a copy of the DD Form 214, Certificate of Release or Discharge from Active Duty (if a veteran) or written proof of current active military duty.
Married, domestically partnered, and/or with legally dependent children – Copies of the marriage certificate or certificate of registration of domestic partnership and/or child’s birth certificate are required.
Medical and disability circumstances – Exemption requests for medical or disability reasons will be forwarded to the Disabled Student Services office. DSS will render a decision and notify the Housing and Residential Life Office.
Other – Where it can be conclusively demonstrated that special circumstances exist which would create a substantial personal hardship which is exacerbated by living on campus and cannot be remedied by alternative means. Verification of the special circumstances is required.

@Gumbymom Is there a similar thing for SDSU for exemption from staying at dorms? Also, I will/will not attend based on the decision given by the college. So is it possible to finish the exemption process before SIRing?

@SmartGurl17: Yes SDSU has an housing exemption form.

@Gumbymom Thanks so much!!

Anyone have an answer?

Got provisional acceptance on 3rd April but I didn’t get an email, I had to go to the self-service website and check my status.

SAT: 1160
International Freshman
Major: Pre-Physics Materials Sci BS

I used the applicant self-service to check my status, a while ago. The email that I received said “Please refer to the waitlist offer sent to you for details on how to respond to this offer as well as the deadline”, however I haven’t receive any other email from csulb. I haven’t been able to do anything and I am freaking out more each day. Is anyone having a similar problem? What should I do?

@taymari1 you should call admissions to make sure you get your spot on the waitlist.

I got accepted early early March like the 4th or something.
