@OHMomof2 I’m not sure of seven, but I do know that the JKCF also awards 5 colleges annually that have a track record of admitting CC students.
http://www.jkcf.org/cooke-foundation-announces-five-finalists-for-1-million-prize/
The ones listed in their annual $1million prize, in 2017 were:
Brown, Stanford, Rice, Berkley, UNC Chapel Hill
Brown is an interesting pick because they’re need-blind… but not for transfers. But at the same time, they do love JKCF finalists, one from my own CC got accepted and is now attending Brown, along with many other finalists from 2017. Berkley and UNC make sense because of the high number of in-state CC applicants they get.
I see. I read a lot about four year students having lower chances, because they are already at a 4-year, which gives CC students a priority. Of course, if you’re applying from a very good school it makes sense that you’ll get strong consideration too.
I don’t think that particular JCK award is about transfers @AGoodFloridian .
Chapel Hill wound up winning for 2017, Amherst won in 2016 and Vassar won in 2015. Amherst’s page about it suggests it is about admitting low income kids, period: https://www.amherst.edu/news/news_releases/2016/05-2016/Amherst-Receives-1-Million-Cooke-Prize/node/650133
A NYT article confirms that Amherst, at least, does explicitly and intentionally favor CC transfers over transfers from 4 year schools:
https://www.nytimes.com/2016/05/15/opinion/sunday/how-and-why-you-diversify-colleges.html?smid=tw-nytopinion&smtyp=cur&_r=0
This JCK scholarship is for CC transfers: http://www.jkcf.org/scholarship-programs/undergraduate-transfer/ but it is for students, not colleges.
@AGoodFloridian nice to see you again from the Swarthmore Transfer thread from last year! Hope everything worked out. I came across this thread and thought I would introduce myself. I’m going to be applying as a junior transfer to the following schools:
USC (Marshall)
Claremont Mckenna
Pomona
Colby
Swarthmore
Chapman
I’m applying from UCLA as an economics major, so we’ll see how this all plays out!
If anyone is applying to any of these schools, let me know! With the exception of USC, none of these schools have a transfer thread for this year.
@armadaswim Hey there pal! Everything did work out for me in one way or another. I ended up staying another year at my community college which made me eligible to apply for the Jack Kent Cooke scholarship for community college transfer students. I didn’t expect much of it since it’s so competitive, but I was chosen as a semi-finalist. In April I’ll find out the big news!
On top of the that, I got an internship specifically designed for community college students to do research in Princeton.
So while last year was a complete landslide of failure, I played with the cards I was dealt, made the most of my plays and hopefully I’m coming back this one last time much stronger than before.
I’m crossing my fingers for you! I’m sure this will be our last rodeo with undergraduate admissions.
(I’m also applying to Pomona!)
@AGoodFloridian Dude thats awesome! I’m really glad that you made the most of your situation and put yourself in the running. That research internship at Princeton is a real hook as well! This is my 3rd year of college apps, so I’m a bit tired from all of this, but giving this final year one last push.
We should make a 2018 Fall Pomona Transfer Thread! The application is due 2/15, so I’m sure people will have comments, questions, or concerns.
Let’s hope that 3rd times the charm!
@armadaswim That sounds like a great idea! Start the thread over there, I’ll hop on.
I was thinking about applying to Harvey Mudd as well, but I heard their core requirements are pretty hard to jump into for many transfer students. Plus their transfer class is super small (50 applicants, 5 accepted last year I think?)
Hi! I’m a current freshman in my second semester at UNC Charlotte, looking to transfer to NC State next fall.
GPA is a 3.4, major is psychology, hs GPA was 4.2 unweighted, 27 ACT
hey everyone, just wanted to see how everyones’ admission processes are going!
Hi! I’m a current freshman at Bard College at Simon’s Rock, an early college program where I started college after my junior year of high school. I also applied to nine schools as an American Studies major. I got denied from Bowdoin (expected! they only took 3 or 4 transfers to my knowledge), accepted to Kenyon, and am waiting to hear back from Barnard, Colby, Cornell, Dartmouth, Connecticut College, Skidmore, and Wesleyan!
@ratgrrrl - I applied to Kenyon too, but I haven’t heard back! When did you hear??
