Hoping to hear from any parents whose kids came home from fall break.

How did the travel go, for those of you not in the midwest?

We are down south, so traveling to Milwaukee is both expensive and time consuming, and hope to get some advice from others outside the midwest as to how they handled the break.

If your child did not come, what did they do during the break? Were they able to eat at the cafeteria, live in the dorm, take advantage of the library/rec center/union?

My son comes home on the train (Glenview, IL) and I usually drive him back late on Sunday. The train is very convenient and inexpensive. This was his third time home since August. There is not much for them to do in the fall except go to house parties. Other than that, he stayed up late and slept in. Nothing new. It was a good break from going to class.

Hey, brutus. What is your son studying?
It is true that the kids from Chicago are lucky enough to nip back home when they want to – and my daughter took that same train a lot last year, though she went to Union Station and then took the Metra home. Is your son not joining any clubs, or exploring the city, or using the Rec Plex? They also get free tickets all the time at the Union to shows at the Rave. I know they all sleep in on Saturdays, but my daughter has started doing Midnight Run, likes to work out, and has gone to the lakefront or shopping many times (as well as going to the parties )
Raynor is the place to be during the week, that’s for sure.

Montegut, what “fall break” do you mean? Thanksgiving or something else?

I wonder if our beloved Jesuit institution isn’t the sort of place where your lad might be “adopted” by someone closer by? And taken home for the weekend? Unless perhaps you mean TG, which is obviously pretty much a family thing, but even then would his floormates or buddies leave him to forage by himself for 4 days? I would think not!

I think there’s a fall break in October, isn’t there? Son has already said he does not want to come home for Thanksgiving, as it’s too close to Christmas to spend the money. I did the same in college. Back in my day, there was no fall break. But it seems like a lot of colleges now have fall break, in line with spring break.

Since son has indicated not to come home Thanksgiving, I thought he might want to come home at fall break, especially the first year, for homesickness, cat visits. If not financially or logistically possible, hoping places will be open for him to eat at least.

I’m hoping Gesu Parish would have some kind of Thanksgiving thing for students not returning home. At Miami, the local parish did that for us. Surely, there are some international students who are in the same boat.

Hoping some of you can give some hints on travel, where to eat if can’t travel, since fall break should have just past.

How did my West Coast LA boy fare for fall break?

Fall break was last Thursday and Friday after midterms. Thanksgiving break is Wednesday, Thursday and Friday. They should be finished around mid-December.

My son is a business major. He is unsure what he wants to study in business, so its a true learning experience for him. He is one of the few who has his bike on campus and does ride the lake front. He is very much into sports, not arts. The train to Chicago has worked out really well.

brutus…if your son is interested in finance at all have him check out the AIM program. They accept a small amount of students who get to actually work with some of the school’s investments. The internships are great and my son got a great job offer in October of his senior year. AIM (Applied Investment Management)
