Hey, I was just looking at the Duke academic calendar and noticed that there's a fall break! I never heard of this before... is it worth going home? I'd have to fly but the prices are decent.

I think a lot of people went home for fall break last year. I didn't though, and it was really quiet on campus. You're also on your own for food (though vendors will still deliver). I had fun staying for break because I went out to eat a couple of times with the 6 or so other kids who were left in my dorm. It was also good for getting some work done and staying a little ahead of things (also, the laundry machines are yours to use... I did prolly about 4 or 5 loads without having to wait for machines to open up :))

Anyway, that's the perspective of someone who decided not to go home. I'll probably end up going home this year, but that's because my family is moving to within 40 minutes of the school and I can just drive home. I didn't want to waste money flying home last year for two or three days when I probably wouldn't see any of my friends anyway.

Yeah I live in California, I'm debating whether its worth it to fly home for those 5 days.

5 days, i think i'll try and survive on campus rather than fly home

when is the fall break?

There are also several trips that go on during Fall Break that you may take part in. For example, the Outing Club (lots of PWILDers) went on another brief camping trip. I believe that's also when Common Ground is, which is a multicultural retreat (I may look into doing that this year, I hear it's an unbelieveable experience). I went home over Fall Break this past year because I'm a bit of a mama's girl and I anticipated that by that point I'd be missing home, but I felt like the break came so soon after school started, at that point I didn't really WANT to leave Duke and, though it was nice to see my parents, I found it a general waste of plane ticket money and travel time since I only missed my Duke friends and none of my friends from home were around anyway. I basically just spent the break catching up on work and watching TV, which I could have done just as well at Duke.

The break is from Friday, October 6th (after classes end) until Wednesday (whenever your classes start that day). So in essence, you really only get Monday and Tuesday off - it's more like a 4 day weekend than a break.

I'm coming back to Oregon for thanksgiving instead of fall break. Maybe I'll visit some northeast friends over the long weekend.

Yeah--
I figured that my friends form HS probably wouldn't be home.
My freshman year I flew up to Penn to visit friends, and last year, I stayed a day for the Rolling Stones concert and then went to the beach with a bunch of Duke friends..

I know that I'm def. going home, if I didn't my parents would kill me...they're pretty much planning on me coming home for every vacation.

Word. Thanks for the advice.

How easy is it to get to the airport?

You may want to wait on fall break plans because you may want to do something with your friends. Last year, I went to DC with a bunch of friends and stayed at one of my new-found friend's houses.

It's really simple getting to the airport...
You might luck out and know someone willing to drive you to the airport or to find a ride with someone... if not, get people together and get a cab. Some local cab companies either have low rates for students between Duke and RDU and some allow students to use their flex points.
But yeah, I agree in waiting to make fall break plans.

Gah. My parents got me a plane ticket but its non refundable. I knew I should've posted this earlier.
