Fall classes

Hi - I’m trying to decide what classes to take first quarter. I definitely plan to take Chem 2A and am wondering how it would be to take Bis 2A at the same time - or would it be better to start Bis 2A in the winter quarter? Also, how do you know which professor is teaching a particular Chem 2A course? It says “The Staff” under instructor.

If it states staff for the instructor, a determination of whom will be teaching has not been decided. For CHM 2A, if possible take Prof. Enderle. He is by far the best Professor for that Chemistry series. Both CHM 2A and BIS 2A are so called 'weed out" classes for STEM majors, so I would take either CHM 2A or BIS 2A your first quarter but not both. I would take a Math requirement instead since the labs can as time consuming as the lectures and only count as a small percentage of your overall grade.

I’ve always heard to either start chem or start bio your first quarter, but not both, mainly because of the labs. I believe the classes in the BIS 2 series are offered every quarter, so it shouldn’t matter too much as long as you don’t put it off more than a quarter or two (assuming you’re in a bio major or something else that requires the BIS 2 series for upper divs).

On that note, what’s your major? Again, I’m assuming something bio related?

And yeah, all the CHE 2A professors are TBA. Enderle usually teaches one of the sections, and Toupadakis might be teaching a section. I’m not sure on any others that would be teaching.

Besides chem, take math as Gumbymom said. If you’re in bio, that should be the 17 series. Besides that, take a GE or two.

Thank you both for the good information. I think I’ll try to sign up for CHE2A, Statistics and one GE. Do you know anything about STA 13? I didn’t take statistics in HS but did take a year of CC calculus. Also, do you know if I still need to take the math placement test if I have already taken and passed calculus?

Yes, you have to take the math placement exam if you plan to enroll in a math class, regardless of your previous math classes. With a year of CC calculus though, depending on your major you might not need additional math classes and might not need to worry about it. Double check with your orientation leader if you haven’t had orientation already. If you do need to take the placement exam, it’s really not anything to worry about especially when you’ve already taken a year of calculus.

You didn’t need to take the math placement for STA 13 as of two years ago. Again, double check because requirements do change.

I haven’t taken STA 13 specifically, but I have taken STA 32. From the sound of it STA 13 is standard algebra-based statistics, with no programming portion (unlike 32).
