<p>The only program I know of taking place after November is Oberlin’s last of three MVP weekends, in the first week of December; but even that application deadline has now passed. In the spring colleges will universally host admitted student weekends, and many will offer to pay for travel.</p>

<p>My daughters will be interested in that, re the Spring admitted student days…visiting for a day or two when you don’t know you can go or what the FA might be is hard, you might fall in love with it and then be disapointed.</p>

<p>^Many people will visit schools, overnight and otherwise, in junior year and fall of senior year on their own… and these programs give certain students the chance to visit faraway schools they couldn’t otherwise afford to see. Indeed, the visits have swayed my position–sometimes significantly–on whether I’d even apply to the school.</p>

<p>Yeah, like I basically know I definitely DON’T want to go to Carnegie Mellon. Or Scripps. And I learned that WashU is far and away my first choice. And it all cost me about $12 in outrageously priced airport water bottles.</p>

<p>Does getting accepted and attending an all-expenses paid diversity weekend generally mean a likely/guaranteed acceptance? It would be strange if they they would pay for someone to fly out after seeing their transcript and essay and then reject them later on.</p>

<p>No, hapaheart, that’s not the case at all. Now, if you get flown out to a program AFTER you apply (and by that I mean significantly; i.e., after the deadlines), you can expect admission. Rice, for example, has a Diversity-like Weekend. An invite to that weekend serves as a likely letter (that is, you’re in and we’re flying you here to make you want to come here) in February. But being invited to Carnegie Mellon in October or Washington University in St. Louis in September is no guarantee. They can reject students later on for any number of reasons, like bad essays or recommendations, a dip in grades, information not before known, etc. And, not every fall visit program looks at the transcripts (I haven’t found one yet that looks at essays, but I’m sure there are some). Washington University in St. Louis, for example, did NOT ask for my transcript.</p>

I speak for many who up until this time had know idea these visits took place…didn’t realize that the idea of “diversity” has really taken a quantum leap from generation before…
As for my hs junior, we’ve visited most of the local schools here in the Pacific Northwest. The issue for us – as w/many people reading these blogs – was how to coordinate visiting schools that require flights, i.e., “D wants to visit Swarthmore & Brown, Colum…etc. Perhaps could fit in a stop over in Illinois to visit U of Chicago on the way to these schools & throw in a trip through Grinnell on way back to Seattle?” In the mean time, she’s writing the needed college essays, keeping up w/her classes & participating in the fall drama production + cross country? Gotta love it…so this is life in the 1st World? LOL</p>

<p>I know its a bear of work already to have gotten this list, but I noticed the updated list is posted in July '10 but it lists the dates for div. weekends in '09. I guess we can check each link but anybody have even an abbreviated list of the '10 dates. If not I can try to get this together but not making any promises, just not sure I have the time. I will try and post at least the ones I look into for my D. Thanks to last year’s group for doing such a great job!</p>

<p>I was going to work on that the other day. I was also going to update the formatting (although K did a great job, it’s just a lot of information). Unfortunately it looks very itme consuming and my interests are often vested elsewhere. I’ll see if I can’t contribute anything.</p>

<p>Yeah, unfortunately I don’t have the time any longer to actively pursue this research. I originally compiled the list for personal use in '09, and decided to share it because this is such a niche area of the college search that can prove surprisingly fruitful. The nature of the compilation is that it becomes outdated each year, but hopefully this will be a useful jumping-off point for others in the future.</p>
