I emailed housing yesterday asking where I was to submit my $100 housing agreement fee. I was met with the surprising news that they did not have my application on file and that I'd now have to start searching off-campus for fall housing. I'm fairly certain I indeed did submit my agreement, as I was filling out my credit card info when I decided to hold off a few days until I had some more funds in my account (this was on Feb 27, so it's not an issue of missing the 10-day payment deadline). Nevertheless, they don't have it. They told me there's a chance I can be squeezed in around May if some people drop out of their agreements. Has anyone else been in the same boat? What are my chances of getting housing? Almost all of the nearby apartments are already full for fall, and I don't have a car so my options are limited. I will be a sophomore too if that changes anything priority-wise.

Thanks

Well if you did not finish filling out the agreement and left the page open in cyperspace, you may have actually never hit send.

There is PLENTY of off campus housing. There are often special deals on rent over the summer for complexes that have not filled. Everyone thinks they have to sign a contract in Feb or miss the boat. But there are plenty of places available. The student apartments where you only sign a lease for one bedroom in a unit with three or four bedrooms always have single rooms to fill.

And while you need to start looking, you can still fill out the application and get a priority number. For freshman admissions, the second notification date for acceptances is not until 3/16, and being a transfer, you can beat all of those priority numbers. If you want a chance, fill it out and send in the $100 now and GET A PRIORITY NUMBER.

You must be confused. Isn’t the housing deposit fee for Fall 2011/Spring 2012 $225? Only Summer 2011 has a $100 deposit due. I remember filling out the housing agreement and submitting it, and the deposit payment was a different submission. If you were filling out your credit card number, why would you mail your payment? I think you can only mail checks.

Sunny, I don’t think agm is a transfer, according to older posts.

agm, don’t you currently live on campus? Will housing treat you like a transfer student now? That’s why I mentioned the $225 vs. $100 deposit from Sunny’s post, I thought you were a new student.

Sorry, I was the one confused! ;/

You should beg Housing to let you use your original priority number.

Yes, I’m indeed a current student. I think $225 may be for incoming freshmen. I’m going off of this email:

"Dear *******,

Our records show that you have not yet submitted a housing agreement for next year. As a returning student, you can still sign up for Fall 2011/Spring 2012 housing. The agreement will be available through March 1st at [The Florida State University - University Housing](http://www.housing.fsu.edu/returnersignup.html).

Important things to know:
- The advance payment of $100 is due within 10 calendar days of submitting the agreement, and must be paid before an assignment will be made.
- Your Fall/ Spring housing assignment will be available on our website on March 31st.
- You will have until April 22nd to cancel your agreement. After that date, no cancellations will be accepted.
If you have questions, please call our office at 850-644-2860 or email us at housinginfo@admin.fsu.edu."

When I was initially filling out my credit card info (February 27), I decided to stop and wait until this week when I’d have more money in my account (paying then would have left me with under $10 in my account, and didn’t want to have so little while traveling home for spring break). Now that I’m settled at home and have some more money available, I tried to go to the payment page which I had bookmarked. The page was unavailable, so I decided to email housing to see if I could mail my payment or if there was another webpage I could be directed to. After all, I was well within the 10 day limit at this time. This is when I was told no application was on file for me.

This has caused me much stress this week, especially with the tone and message I’m receiving from housing. They’re telling me that I can be put on a waiting list, and that it’s unlikely I’ll get housing. They even encouraged me to start looking off-campus, which is a problem as I have a medical issue that would make off-campus housing nearly impossible to deal with. But if that’s what I have to do, I’ll do it. I’m going to call tomorrow as I feel like my emails are just being answered without much consideration. I haven’t mentioned my medical issue (already documented with housing), so maybe I will get some leeway there, though I feel guilty using that as leverage.

I just don’t understand how I was completing my credit card payment if I hadn’t progressed all the way through the application. I distinctly remember a “Thank you for submitting, pay electronically now or within 10 days” type of message. Maybe I in fact made a mistake though, which means I’ll start looking for off-campus options.

Update:
I was able to get an application sent to me and I faxed it back this morning. I believe this puts me on the waiting list.

^You should still politely push housing to give you back your original priority #. The renewal apps weren’t due until March 1 and $100 deposit was then due within 10 business days which would be like next Tuesday so it’s not like you are months late squaring with them with your housing renewal contract. Go to the housing office asap and cry some, try to get a better place in line than wait list for room assignment for next year!

agm, I’m with Tallalassie, go to the Housing Office and tell them that you are on campus now and that you shouldn’t have to get a new priority number. There must have been a glitch in the system and maybe they will be able to help you in person.

Was your original priority number worth fighting for?

My original priority number was in the low 3000s if I remember correctly. I still got my first choice though.

Are you guys sure I’m getting a completely new priority number? This is an excerpt from the very first email I got:

“At this point you can fill out the housing agreement in our office and we will hold on to it until May as the deadline to apply was March 1st. If we have received enough cancellations in May we will assign returning students.”

I really wish I could go to the office in person, but I’m currently home in Tampa for break. If nothing new develops in my email correspondence then I’ll stop by there on Monday when I get back in town. I at least have my foot in the door by faxing the application they sent me today.

Though, I don’t think pushing any more would get me any further. I get the feeling that they’re already fed-up with my three or four emails. I don’t see why they would help me out as in their eyes this situation was caused by my negligence, which I’m fairly certain is a mistake. I’ll try whatever I need to do, and I’ll update this post in case someone is in a similar situation later.

You’re their customer; it’s their job to answer those emails, so don’t feel bad.

I agree with the suggestion to go to the office in person and see if there’s anything they can do for you. Make sure you are adamant about the fact that you sent the application, and attempted to pay the deposit within the ten days. It’s not like you’d be lying; what’s the worst that can happen?

Yeah I understand that Matt, and I think I have things settled for now. I just got confirmation that they received all my (paper) agreement stuff that I sent today, and that I’ll find out my assignment in May. I’m mailing the $100 check in about 30 minutes from Tampa. For now this is all I can do as I’m off-campus, and I might check-up on things in person next week.

Sorry this has happened to you.

I don’t think we keep our priority numbers. I’m an incoming freshy who applied for both summer & Fall housing & I have two different priority numbers. 600 for summer and 2200 for fall.

Cassy, your original priority number for Fall/Spring (Summer doesn’t count) is kept as long as you live continuously on campus.

From the Housing website:

CURRENT RESIDENT RENEWAL PROCESS
Fall 2011/Spring 2012

How are room assignments made?
Assignments will be made in order using students’ original housing application date (the date a student first applied to University Housing with continuous residency excluding summer semesters) and original priority number. For this reason, the order in which returning resident housing agreements are completed is irrelevant.

agm, maybe they are doing something special for you and you won’t lose your number for future residency, since new residents get their assignments in June and they are letting you know in May:)
