So I am a Sophomore Transfer Student to the BBA program coming from Wellesley College, so I would prefer to live in an all women's dorm. I would prefer to have a single and live by myself, but I really like the sense of community in Martha Cook and its a bit better of a location. I don't think it really matters to me that Cook's meal plan is separate and I won't be able to eat anywhere else. Cost is not a factor. Coming from, Wellesley I really liked the strong sense of Community within the Res Halls and Martha Cook seems very similar to Wellesley's Res Halls. I also do not know anyone at Umich and want to be able to make friends quick. Anyone have any insight that might help in my decision?

Something to consider-- if you live in a single are you likely to withdraw a bit socially? I am the type that, if I am not forced to be social at least occasionally, even if it bothers me to be alone all the time I still have a hard time putting myself out there. Because I am transferring and I don’t know anyone to make friends with yet, I put myself in a double to force myself to at least meet one new person. I might get a single next year but at the very least living in a double now will give me the opportunity to meet one more person and maybe some of their friends so maybe I’ll feel a bit more included in my first semester there. Otherwise I’ll probably fall into old habits and sit in my room by myself, whining about being all alone. :P

I’d also advise you to look at the virtual tours on the residence hall website if you haven’t already. Martha Cook looks REALLY nice, I considered it. Don’t know as much about Betsey Barbour, but it’s location should still be pretty good if you’re classes are on central campus so I wouldn’t let that hold you back too much.

Martha Cook residents tend to form VERY close bonds with other residents there. It is different from other residence halls in that your mean plan is only valid at martha cook - so, you can’t grab dinner with a friend up on the hill, but then again, what are the chances you’ll actually want to eat in the dining hall, anyway? You also need to personally let in your guests and such, and can’t have male visitors on upper floors, or something like that. I’m not quite sure about the exact rules. I’ve been inside Martha Cook and it is BEAUTIFUL. The staff really goes all out for the holidays and everything, too - like 20 foot christmas trees and holly-garlands.
I wish I could tell you something about Barbour, but I don’t know much!
Good luck and GO BLUE.
