I'm applying for 10th grade ,and got waitlisted. but frankly i started to appreciate this "waitlisted" when I got rejections for the rest of the school i applied... anyone knows the admission situation this year ? lots of school said that it was the most competitive in history. do i stand a chance of eventually getting accepted??!! thanks so much for any comments,exeter is my DREAM SCHOOL !P.S. what should i do? contact my interviewer or do i update them with my achievements? just got the first prize for a regional debate comp.

Yes, I also heard this year’s BS application cycle in general should be most competitive.

Check with the enrollment number by schools. Exeter has a very high percentage of enrollment rate, meaning that many students who are accepted would choose to go to Exeter. It means that the chances for those who are wait-listed will be accepted are rather low.

sooo aware of that . but do u know how long is the waiting list? im just wondering if i should contact my interviewer/the office to see where i am on the waiting list. ppl here on CC said that ur chances all depended on the accepted students, if u r like one of the kids that turned it down, u ll have a better chance cuz they have that keeping the balance stuff/

If Exeter is your DREAM SCHOOL @lhtlinda, then call! Call and email and let them know this is your FIRST CHOICE!! Be persistent, ask them what you can do to make your chances better. They probably won’t tell you where you are on the WL, but instead tell you it is not ranked. Don’t let that stop you. Keep calling, tell them you are sending new info.

Kids WILL come off the WL. They do every year. My student did and we were persistent. Give yourself the best chance. Good Luck.

Look at “The Wait List” thread at the top of the list of threads in this forum

@dadofexeter, im an international student,so i guess ill just email. should i include my new acheivements? like i got a firstclass award in a debate contest et catera . but i dont think they do re-interviewing or re-sending though… how often should i write ? i dont wanna make them feel harassed or anything ;)

If Exeter is your must-go school, send anything that you feel necessary. Email them oftenand ask them how it looks and what more you could do. It only shows how much you are ready and dedicated to Exeter.You are not bothering them. After all you have little to lose. Do not give up hope and show them you still have hope.

It is a fine line between keeping them up to date becoming a pest–but if one has to err-- err on the side of too much rather than too little attempted contact.

I wrote a long post in Wait List – I hope it can give a bit of help from someone who has been around the system more years than he cares to remember.

@etondad ,whats the name? can’t seem to find it…thx. just wondering if being an international student is gonna hijack my chances,don’t think us chinese ppl will give up exeter,given the osm reputation…

@lhtlinda

We pursued Exeter for my son. He emailed his interviewer and Mr. Gary directly. We called and emailed about once a week. We asked what they would want as far as more documentation. We sent a updated set of grades.

He did end up making it off the waitlist very early, (the day after decisions were due in April). Is this the norm? Maybe not. Will you make it off even if you do all of these things? Maybe not, but even if he hadn’t made it off we could say we did everything we could to give him his best chance. You don’t want to feel like you left anything on the table. Give it your best shot and good luck!

@NHMomof3,i am an artist but didn’t submit my artworks,i’m really good. Guess i’ll send a link ? my interviewer was Mr. Gary, so i’ll send it to him directly. did u send a updated letter of achievements as well? i want to send one so i can list my new achievements, like helping starting our district’s mock trial program, first in debate contest,etc.

I would call them if I were you and ask them what in terms of extras would they want and who you should send it to. Unfortunately, Exeter doesn’t provide a way to submit portfolios online during the application process, or at least they didn’t they year my C applied. Ask them what you should do. They will tell you.

We never spoke with Mr. Gary directly nor to C’s interviewer. We were transferred to an intern and all of our correspondence went through him. He was very nice and answered all of our questions.

Even if they don’t have an official way to send portfolios-- so long as it is small and well done-- I’d send it–for art, slides or the latest equivalent–often are the best way . Even if it doesn’t help this year if you are interested in reapplication it can’t hurt. But no cakes and cookies–nothing frivolous.

@NHMomof3, did ur son have a special talent or his file was just reviewed and was thought to be one of the best on the WL ? i’m not sure how many spots will open up this year, especially considering the fact that im international…

Read the entire thread. You’ll find etondad’s post, along with many others that are equally useful.

The same rules apply to Exeter as to any other school. Do NOT send a physical portfolio of your artwork. If you want to email a link, that wouldn’t be a problem.

There are two “waves” of wait list acceptances at Exeter.

The first wave comes after April 10, when they see how many students have responded to offers of admission. Because room is very tight, they usually accept a rather low number and pull off the wait list right after April 10 for any spots that are not accepted. They do not want to over enroll, and yield has been high the last two years.

The next smaller wave comes in the summer, when people who sent in deposits, maybe because they were waitlisted somewhere else and eventually accepted there, or had a change of heart or financial status, withdraw before full payment is due in July.

Good luck, and certainly update your AO on your continued interest and accomplishments. At this point, contact is good.

@dodgersmom, thx , I already did.

2lhtlinda

Our case was very different in the fact that our S is a day student. He does play a sport, but not one of the big ones. Also, we didn’t apply for FA, so that may have been a factor as well.

He was taken off the WL and we got the call April 11.

I believe 2prepmom is very likely correct. There were something like 21 calls made right after April 10 last year. This according to one of last year’s threads from someone who spoke with admissions. Then there were just a couple of calls as the summer wore on.

But remember, there are hundreds of kids on the WL, I heard from last year somewhere around 600, so with calls made you are looking at less than 4%.
If you have other options, please look at them seriously. There is always hope, but don’t let another opportunity pass by.

The on-line Exonian usually carries news of acceptances, yield, etc. so when school starts back up later this week keep an eye out for info there. The directions to “subscribe”
are just to the left of the sign in, and it is free on-line.

@ 2prepMom ,wheres that thread about yield etc ? @NHMomof3 , does being an international student make a difference ? like if two kids from my country chose not to go ,would there be two more spots for ppl from the same country ? or its just mixed ? im totally confused & is the yield higher than that of domestic applicants? im not applying for FA ,but definitely a boarder. Im aware that the WL is long , but I also heard that a lot of ppl chose not to stay on it cuz they had another option , i just don’t know how they select ppl when it comes to the WL , it’s hard to tell who’s more qualified ,isn’t it ?:)
