Would I get more financial aid if I transfer in the spring or fall? At Wisconsin -Madison, do I qualify for banner aid or is that just for freshman? I'm oos and my efc is 0.

Oh brother. UWisconsin does not meet full need for even I state students. I would think for OOS cost to attend would be huge. I don’t know about UW, but most schools offer precious little aid to transfer students.

Now…having said that…if you apply there…do so as a fall transfer, AND submit your FAFSA to them as soon as it is available to submit on January 1. You will need to amend it to reflect your completed tax return ASAP after Feb 1, but by submitting on Jan 1, you will be in the queue for limited funding aid programs like federal work study, Perkins loans, and SEOG if the school has that for OOS students.

With a $0 EFC you are guaranteed the max Pell grant, plus the Direct loan ($6500 if you are a sophomore and $7500 if you are a junior). So total guaranteed aid would be $12,000 to $13,000 total.

Here is some information on Banner Aid:
[BANNER | Office of Student Financial Aid - University of Wisconsin–Madison](<a href=“Office of Student Financial Aid – UW–Madison”>Office of Student Financial Aid – UW–Madison)

It does not say if it is for freshman only, so that is something you will have to find out.

I would say it is better to apply for the fall as aid is generally for the entire year and the deadlines do come early.

Their website further states that funds are limited for spring transfers…so apply as a fall transfer.

The Banner sounds great IF you get selected for it. It is nice that they have this for OOS students.

Please have some other transfer options just in case that doesn’t work out!

Did you try the NPC on the website?

If you put in that you’re a sophomore transfer, OOS, with an EFC 0, you’d be widely gapped if you’re not a Banner Scholar.

(Does anyone know how Banner Scholars are usually picked? Is it essentially a merit scholarship for high stats and a low EFC?)

Since transfers usually get their aid pkgs quite late (sometimes not til summer), do NOT cut ties with your current school until you gete your FA pkg and see if it’s affordable.

Why are you transferring?

Thanks for the replies, I might transfer in the fall then, but my problem is after this semester I will be a junior(took a sem off), so if I apply in the fall, i’ll already be 1 sem into my junior year. Won’t that effect my transfer admission? I’m also a MN resident so I’ll only have to pay $1,000 more than in-state tuition.

The reason I’m transferring is because Wisconsin has the major I want to go in that the U of M doesn’t have. Also because Wisconsin Madison seems like a better school.

I don’t think employers are going to give any preference to UWisc grads over UMinn grads. They’re peer flagships.

what is this major that isn’t at UMinn? Isn’t there anything comparable at UMinn?

Again, even if the tuition is only slightly more, you’re still OOS, so a Pell student may not get enough aid. Don’t cut ties with UMinn until you see your aid pkg.

Right now my GPA is 3.45 and I plan to get it up. I have always done well in science classes in high school.
I’m at U of Minn-duluth, I guess I could transfer to the twin cites campus but I want to go to a top ranking school to be competitive for grad schools. Also I feel a top ranking school would have better research oppurtunities, co-ops, and networks. But I could be wrong, should I just go to my state school?

Ok…so you’re not at UMinn-TC. Well apply there as well. The OOS publics on your list will not likely be affordable.

Your fears about UM-TC are unfounded for grad school. Your GPA is what may hold you back from a good PhD program…not graduating from UM-TC

Not great aid for an OOS Minn resident. Your net price is higher than what you’d likely have to pay at UM-TC.
